Like others say in reviews, it is not the most scenic road ever, but it is still pretty nice. If you have the time and are travelling between Santa Fe and Taos on a nice day it is worth it. There are pretty views in places and some nice historic churches to see. We were there in early spring and there weren't many places open, so we didn't stop. We just used it as a scenic way to get from place to place. There are some high elevation areas, so watch the weather forecast carefully. Still, a pretty ride and no regrets about travelling the high road.

This is a nice, scenic drive from Santa Fe to Taos. I've seen some reviews complain that it wasn't that scenic. Well, yeah if you expect it to be the most scenic drive in America, you'll probably be disappointed. But it is still a nice, scenic, leisurely drive.
The highlights are the scenery and several historic and unique churches to stop at and view along the way: Santuario de Chimayó, San Jose de Gracia de las Trampas, and San Francisco de Asis Catholic Mission Church.
Make sure you get good directions on the route to follow, because Google Maps and other map apps will direct you to the fastest route, not the official scenic road.
It took us about 3 hours.

My husband and I were impressed with our private tour from Santa Fe to Taos with Tyler Johnson, a friendly and knowledgeable guide. As first-time visitors to New Mexico, we experienced the High Road to Taos, Taos Pueblo, and learned about the people, history, and landscape of the area. We also had the opportunity to delight in a delicious southwestern themed lunch. Our return route took us passed the Rio Grande Gorge and further south where we paralleled the river with stunning views. In both directions, Tyler stopped to give us the opportunity to take pictures incorporating the beauty of the landscape. From start to finish, our day was amazing!

It is a beautiful drive but it wasn’t as spectacular as guide books make it sound. I don’t regret driving this route from Santa Fe to Taos but we will try the low road to return.

I drove the High Road to Taos from Santa Fe with a friend recently. I'd done it once before but that was 30 years earlier. Our first stop was at Chimayó and we saw the Santuario de Chimayó, perhaps the most beautiful of the old churches along the route, though interior photos are not allowed. We next stopped at Truchas - the church there was a bit harder to find and it's not as interesting, though the drive along the town's main street was worth the time there. Next was Las Trampas and the Church of San José de Gracia. The exterior is picturesque though it was not possible to go inside on the day I visited. Our final stop, at the end of the High Road, was at Ranchos de Taos to see the San Francisco de Asis church there. This church is relatively large and impressive, and it was possible to take interior photos there.
There are other places we could have stopped but with somewhat limited time on the day we drove the High Road I feel like we saw the highlights. Starting in Santa Fe we were able to get to Taos Plaza by late morning. This was a very enjoyable drive passing by or through a number in picturesque small towns, and I'd love to go back when I have more time. I'd certainly recommend this drive over the faster route from Santa Fe to Taos if you have a little extra time to see some fascinating old towns.

We drove in the opposite direction of the High Road: from Taos to Santa Fe. The start of the road in Taos is not too spectacular, but the higher you climb along the way, the better it becomes and when we arrived to the little village of Truchas, we just couldn’t take our eyes off the sweeping view in front of of us. The village is set in a dramatic landscape at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, in the shadow of Truchas Peak. The snow peaks, blue sky, fluffy white clouds, green forest looked magnificent… like in Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings. No wonder she was so inspired by the beauty of New Mexico vistas.
When we were approaching Santa Fe, we were met by entirely different landscape in Espanola and Nambe: magical rock formations looked like golden castles, medieval towers, fortresses… ethereal view… And the thunderstorm was in the making, so the rocks looked even more dramatic.

Drove this road from Santa Fe to Taos and the views at times were spectacular. The road can be narrow and some cars want to blow you off the road but it was enjoyable.

We have been on the High Road a number of times and have enjoyed each trip. Today, we decided to drive the High Road to see the aspen. Good idea. Instead of just driving, we decided to take our time on the drive. Our first stop was at the Church at Chimayo. Just wonderful. We drove through several of the small old towns along the way. None spectacular. But each just wonderful. We also stopped at a number of scenic overlooks to look at the wonderful scenery. We drove back to Santa Fe via the Rio Grande Gorge.
The trip was just wonderful. And the aspen? They were quite good. Not as good as other northern New Mexico drives (e.g., the Enchanted Circle). But quite nice.
Probably the thing we did differently this drive was to take more time to enjoy the wonderful scenery and small towns.

Great drive up to Taos. We were in Santa Fe then White Rock prior. The views along the drive are nice. From flat and scrub brush to mountain views and everything inbetween. Areas of trees/fall foliage change as well. You also go through a couple small town.

(1) High Road: Did you find any town that you would have liked to stay over night in? .. (2) Low Road: If you did the low road, how was that? I'm not into heights and scary roads, so we might be better taking the low road both ways? .. Thanks!

No place I would have spent the night but a great drive. Low Road had a great Native American display at Poeh Cultural Center – A Center for Tewa Pueblo Culture

Just bought a Chevy Colorad Zr2 which has AWD, 4HI, 4LO. I live in flat Texas so have always driven in 2WD cars. When driving to TAOS on the high road in snowy conditions, should I be using AWD ?

Definitely. If you're a good driver and used to snow, you might be okay, but why take the risk? There are a number of places where there are steep drop-offs, and while there are railings, there's no need to risk it. Use AWD, take the temporary loss in gas mileage, take your time, and enjoy a beautiful drive!

Wondering why everyone recommends the high road FROM SANTA FE TO TAOS, but no one talks about taking the high road FROM TAOS TO SANTA FE. We will be making that drive only in one direction—from Taos to Santa Fe. Is the high road still the most scenic route, or is it special only in the northerly direction??? TIA

Either way it’s a great drive, don’t be in a hurry as it’s curvy with steep drop offs.
Allow yourself time to stop and explore the terrain on both sides of the road.

Planning a motorcycle trip to Taos next weekend (late October) and there is forecast for snow Friday.... We are supposed to ride the enchanted circle Saturday, but considering doing a High Road/Low Road loop instead if the altitude is less on that trip. Does anyone know what the max altitude is on the High Road? The enchanted circle gets to 10,000 feet and that could mean ice or snow left over from the previous day. Thanks!

A quick google of altitude for the high road lists the highest altitude as 8581’. That’s higher than I thought. Still fun. 😀

That's the way we went. Stopped at Questa... Then Red River... Then Eagles Nest... Then down and back to Taos, NM

I will have one day in Taos. So far I believe he following is doable. Please suggest more or less. I am traveling in from Colorado Springs and expect to arrive around 11 a.m. The next day after breakfast leaving for The Dunes in Colorado.
The gorge

Taos Plaza
lunch and dinner somewhere
Circle Drive that day or in the morning heading to the Dunes in CO.

The gorge, Pueblo, Plaza and a meal are definitely doable in a day. Are you driving the loop a different day? It would be a bit much to add the drive same day.

In Chimayo, where State Road 98 ends, the road turns right onto State Road 76 and begins the climb into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the little villages of the High Road.
So from Chimayo, follow Road 76 northeast until you reach Picuris Pueblo. From there, take road 75 towards Peñasco and Vadito. At ceartin point road 75 turns into road 518. At the end of road 518 you will reach Ranchos de Taos.
Although the High Road officially ends where road 518 meets road 68 in Ranchos de Taos, symbolically it ends at the famous San Francisco de Asis Mission Church a few blocks south.

The road is pretty hilly and has some tight turns. You should be able to make it without much difficulty if you are normally competent. Avoid snow days when the hills can get dicey.
