Fall at Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve

If you’re looking for a NYS park with great trails and enough room that you can walk without having a crowd of people walking along side you, the Caumsett State Historic Park is the place for you. The over 1500 acres park is located on a peninsula in the Town of Huntington (Village of Lloyd Harbor) that extends into the LI Sound.

Park benches are strategically located along the trail and are not buried within bushes.

The main trails are wide, paved and are perfect for bicycles and jogging.

There are also horse stables and several corrals located alongside the start of the trails.

Always enjoy a good walk (or bike ride) through this park, way up at the tip of Long Island's North Shore, especially with the midpoint being the rocky beach on the Long Island Sound. Trails (the "main road") are on asphalt, packed dirt or in open fields. It's a great place to walk under the canopy of trees during any season, explore the former estate property with horse stables (new and old), former dairy & hay barns, totally quiet off-paths & views of salt marshes & water birds. Enjoy a snack at the Caumsett Cafe, near the main entrance (restrooms there also), as well as a meander or read a book in the Walled Garden.

Love the atmospher and people there was very kind! We will surely come back to visit the water road! Totally recommend for all the family for a sunday walking!

Excellent Weekend Activity

Great trails (both paved and unpaved) that are ideal for walking, running and cycling. Lots of different paths to take depending on your activity level and how long you’d like to spend at the park. There are a few different hills throughout the park if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge. Water views make for a great pit stop. Bathrooms are clean and located at the beginning and middle of the main trail. No dogs of any size allowed. Overall a nice day activity!

Really beautiful preserve and park. Great amount of walks and trails. The stables are cool. The area is just beautiful. Parking gets full early so plan ahead.

Big park with water views!

Came here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. It was beautiful out so naturally the park was packed. They do have a lot of parking beyond the first lot you see when you come in. The park is big enough that once you branch away from the paved path you feel more secluded. We walked all the way to the sound. They have a little beach. We sat for a while and walked along the shore before heading back. Bathrooms were open. Only two stalls but either a very short wait or no line. Very pretty. Will definitely go back for fall foliage peeping!

Massive Park..Allow lots of time for your visit!

Knew about this park for years and finally made the hour-long drive from the Bronx. 1/3 of the time is spent after you leave the main highway and navigate through main roads and other street to get to the park. During most of that time, there aren't many, if any gas stations of food places so be sure to stock up before entering the last leg of the drive. We arrived mid week at about 1 PM and it was fairly empty. They were not collecting entry fees at that time but I think it is usually around $10 per vehicle. The park is massive! Give yourself a few hours to navigate the park, especially if you plan on visiting all the areas. The main area where you initially enter and park has lots of pen fields and barn houses but they don't seem visitable. The equestrian center and garden grounds are also closeby. You can either walk, bike or drive to get closer to the beach area. Walking may be a bit much so biking may be a good options. The park signs were adequate making it easy to navigate. Bathrooms were clean. I hope to return again and do some more exploring. I recommend this palce to any to come for a walk, run or bike and relax. Also a great place for some photos.

Love this for a weekend walk or hike. Plenty of parking. We visit once a week if we can since we have the Empire pass. You can find a map online on the NY State Park website.

A nice hiking spot

The view was great! Recommended by friends and we arrived in the early morning, saw a lot of people working out there and also had a brief yet interesting intro from a nice guy. Would definitely come again;)

We used to live in Huntington and would visit frequently. We now live further away but decided to take a drive and a hike and explore an old favorite. The park is well maintained and was not crowded. It was eight dollars per car but is free with an empire passport. They also have clean restrooms. The trails are paved and flat making it suitable for strollers.

Two minor negatives. The trail map is poor and the trails need to be better marked. Second there were bikers who exceeded the posted speed limit and did not stay within the bike lanes. We saw one bicyclist speeding while looking at his phone!

Despite the above we plan on returning.
