We did our tour to Bannerman's Castle on Sunday afternoon. The meeting point is easy to find because they sent details and confirmation in email. The caption and the guide were excellent. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting this area.

Pleasant boat ride to the island learning some local history of the area. The island tour was fantastic! The knowledgeable and engaging tour guides tell you a fascinating and exciting tale about this unusual island and the life of the man behind it all. The ruins and the immaculately kept gardens were gorgeous. After the tour, you have some free time to explore the island on your own. There are many many steps from the dock to where you begin the tour, so sadly I would not recommend this to anyone who has mobility issues. I recommend wearing comfy shoes with good tread as the terrain can be steep in places. Dress in layers as the boat ride may be windy, but you will work up a sweat exploring the island. There was a small concession stand/gift shop area on the island where you could buy a cold drink, and a restroom if needed.

Two seniors took the Bannerman Cruise & Walking Tour from Beacon New York boat docks. It was a 30 minute ride to and from the island and we spent 90 minutes on the island tour with a very knowledgeable guide. Lots of rocks and some steep paths but very walk-able paths. No buildings but the actual Bannerman residence have been restored and can be entered, but the history of the island is really fascinating. The boat has a guide who tells the history of this part of the Hudson River. Probably not suitable for young children as they most likely would be bored. Limited facilities on the island but port-a-potties and a small gift shop are there. Probably even better in the fall with the trees turning color but probably much colder out on the water.

Such an enjoyable day. Wes, our tour guide, was phenomenal. He was engaging, funny and encouraged questions. He answered them all in detail. The rest of the tour was spent relaxing, taking a few more pictures, and taking the mini hike to the high hill. The island presents fabulous views of the surrounding area. Great day trip.

The boat ride over was breezy and nice. Captain Steve and Jay were friendly, fun and informative. They brought us right up to the island and then we were lead on a fabulous tour by Adam. My husband is now desperately trying to find a Bannerman catalog to add to his collection (yes, he collects catalogs). The boat came back just as we had finished our tour of the island. Highly recommend this if you’re looking for a bit of fun history.

Ferry ride...
You need to get to the ferry dock 30 mins before departure. Parking is not free before 5pm weekdays because the parking lot is actually that of the Beacon Train Station.
So be aware or you may get a ticket as we did see parking inspectors!
The boat ride to the island is quite pleasant but the ferry has tight seating when the tour is fully booked (I think 44 people per tour).
Island...
Once you get to the island, there are quite a few steps from the dock to anywhere else, so bring comfortable walking shoes. If you have walking difficulties or bad knees, etc then make sure you are ready for these steps and inclines. The only flat walking space is the Bannerman's summer home (not the castle you see in the pics - that was an armory). It is small and now houses some posters of what the island looked like in its hey-day.
We took the Friday 5:30pm tour in summer to be able to see the sunset and also because it was a slightly less crowded tour. Seeing the sunset during our ferry ride back to Beacon was very nice.
The tour...
We were very much looking forward to the tour with many questions deserving a serious historical answer. However, we were a bit disappointed by the guide/s who want to be cool rather than on-point. Talking as if they were presenting in front of 7th graders (we were all adults in our group) started to wear thin after a while, with references the owners doing 'high fives' and 'dropping cash' and 'MAYBE Woodstock attendees starting the fire of '69', so on. If you want visitors to treat the island like it has historical significance, at least present it that way. They also need to be better informed as I asked what eventually happened to the family and it's wealth. I needed to ask two guides, but eventually had to Google it to find out what really happened.
Amenities...
There are toilets and places to sit when on the island, and on the night we went they were selling cold drinks since they were about to have a movie night (they occasionally show classic movies, pre-purchased tickets required). A water bottle was $4, so if you're on a budget you may want to bring your own drinks which you'll need if it's summer.
Still - for $40/ea it is very well worth it.

Bannerman Castle is an interesting piece of local history. Everyone in the local area knows about the island in the middle of the Hudson but most people can't tell you the history and even fewer have been to the island. The Bannerman Castle Trust has made great progress toward restoring the parts that can be salvaged including the home, the gardens and the ruins of the castle. It's well worth the price of the ticket to take the boat ride to the island, see the structures and hear the history.

Fun, smooth ferry ride over to the island, with a great captain and first mate. Upon arrival, our tour guide was a wealth of information. Exploring the rugged terrain after the tour was equally fun. Overall a really great day + a place you should go visit!

Our perfect day trip to Bannerman's Island started with an enjoyable 30 minute scenic boat ride from Beacon (dock is a short walk from the Metro North station) . Our captain/crew Justin and Jay pointed out historic landmarks along the way and had us laughing throughout the ride. Once on the island, we were in the very capable hands of our tour guide Mary whose enthusiasm and knowledge of the island and the Bannerman family was impressive and made the day enjoyable. We were able to bring some snacks and enjoy them while taking in a beautiful view of the Hudson River. This is a trip for all ages, families, couples and solo travelers. Highly recommend!

I’m a senior and use a cane, would I be able to do the tour? Can I sit somewhere and skip the walking part and wait for the boat? Thanks.

I agree with the other response. Hilly ,rocky, it’s a little rough.its hard to say. It really does depend on how mobile u r If u have problems with steps. It’s not that long and u can stay on main trail Just make sure it’s not to hot cause that would mak3 it hard.

How long is the boat ride and how long is the whole tour for including the boat ride.
I schedule it for 11am. I’m just wondering about what time i will get done.

The travel time depends on the wind speeds and how choppy the river may be, but typically it's 25-30 minutes each way. If the weather is nice, it's a great trip with wonderful views and sightings of all sorts of other ships heading both upriver and downriver.
