I had visited this church about 50 years ago with my mother, and returned to see it as an adult. The docent was well-informed and the artwork was exquisite. A unique experience, high recommended.

Union Church is absolutely stunning. Nice and small and the stained glass windows are exceptional. Was at a nice remembrance service for a colleague who passed away.

I was incredibly moved by the story of each stained window and the beauty of each piece. The last work by Matisse is also an incredible thing to see. It is worth it to go and view these pieces in the humble church. Make sure to book tickets online as you cannot just walk in and tour the church freely.

Stopped to see the church after a lovely tour at the Rockefeller Estate. We mistakenly thought we could go directly inside the church after purchasing our tickets. When exiting the church after viewing the windows, we encountered a guide with a tour ready to go into the church. Once we found out we weren’t supposed to be inside, we apologized profusely. However, the guide berated us in front of her entire tour group. Demanding to know if we touched anything or had taken pictures. We assured her that we did not. We felt awful about the misunderstanding, but the situation was made even worse by her condescending treatment of us. I will never visit again. Horrible experience.

We stumbled across this absolute gem quite by chance. It is in the middle of the Rockefeller estate in Pocantico Hills. There they have 9 wonderful stained glass windows by Marc Chagall and one Rose Window by Henri Matisse. An art gallery inside a small church.

Such a beautiful setting for Chagall’s great art.
The Matisse can teach us something too, but not wowed by the artistry.
Great tour guide, Maura, makes it easy to understand the art and history of the site. She knows so much about the Rockefeller and the whole area too!

(This is just off a few miles from the Tappan Zee bridge crossing Westchester county, NY. )
We had a 30 minute tour by the docent, "Roxanne." For 30 minutes she detailed not only the background of each of the 10 friezes but gave the full description of the narrative story. These are Judeo-Chrisitian scenes funded with the wealth of the Rockefellers and created by the Hassidic faithed Marc Chagall. [There are only 3 places in the world his stained glass is displayed.] It's hard for me to understand how he so well interpreted the selections with cubist renderings so exactly and with emotion! I came here on Father's day as a, "trip to do something", thinking we'd find it somehow beautiful, head out, and add it to our checklist of things to do. Instead, I find myself overwhelmed with the spirituality of the flat glass technique that Chagall employed and the method of using the lead strips as directional pointers in the perspective of the retelling of the specific bible story. If you're heading to New England, or heading south to Jersey, or just a resident of northern NJ head over. They say no pictures allowed but the picture in your mind of each of these fantastic tableaus will be forever top of mind for you. Yes, they're that good.

The Rose window by Henri Matisse and stained glass windows by Marc Chagall are almost beyond my ability to describe. The tor guide was very capable of describing the history of the Roosevelt family members commemorated in the Chagall windows and in tidbits about the inspiration these two artists drew on for their creations. I would say that we were not encouraged or given permission to sit on the pews and the oral presentation was a little difficult to appreciate because I found it hard to stand the whole time. Perhaps, the guides could anticipate people's need to sit, at least some of the time. But the church is a beautiful and quiet sanctuary and a site I'd recommend to any visitor.

On our last day in New York City, we drove an hour north to visit some of the historic sites along the Hudson River. Pocantico Hills is about 10-15 minutes inland from Sleepy Hollow. Once we heard about its fabulous stained glass windows, we bought tickets for a tour, making it the last stop of the afternoon. We attended a docent-led program that spent about 30 minutes sharing the stories of the church (built with financial support of the Rockefeller family) and its beautiful Matisse and Chagall windows. Photos are not allowed inside the church, but a set of postcards featuring each of the windows is available for purchase. Glad that we didn't miss this artistic treasure!

They need to get someone younger involved. They don't allow pictures. Instead, they want you to buy their postcard photos. Sorry, it's not 1985. Not a single person on my tour bought one.
Allowing people to take pictures and encouraging them to tag on social would be a much better marketing strategy and would make them more money in the long run.
If you're not allowing photos, say that on the website so we know before we buy tickets.
