Overall disappointing experience! Many of the exhibits were broken or not functional. Third floor really had nothing.

It had a fascinating and large display of Indians and Africans history, in this country. A huge moving earth display, dinosaurs. I found it interesting all the dinosaur bones discovered near Rochester. 3 floors, with lots to look at and many displays to try. It was fun and educational.

In this day and age of alternate-reality paranoia against "critical race theory" it's great to see fearless exhibits dealing with the history of racial caste in this country. The Underground Railroad displays highlight heroic efforts of all kinds of Americans (very reminiscent of brave Germans who sheltered Jews at great risk to themselves). A must-see for the city of Frederick Douglass! There was also a profound exhibit on objective racism. We should stay educated on these things and keep the post-truth mob at bay.

Spent several hours here on a Saturday afternoon in April. Fair amount of free off-street parking but we had to hunt a bit to find an open spot. Staff was very friendly. Lots of exhibits to enjoy and learn from. Great for kids. Because the place is big, it didn't seem too crowded, especially in the areas that didn't cater to kids. We bought tickets upon entry for that evening's laser light show set to Beatles music next door. I think it may have made it cheaper that way. That show ended up being sold out so were glad we got tickets hours ahead. That 45-minute show was very entertaining and something different.

We wanted to spend a few hours doing something fun and educational! This was the perfect place. They also had the dinosaur exhibit which was a site to see. Great for all ages and you'll learn something new visiting the museum

My 14 year old son and I were looking for something to do for a few hours waiting for my older son to finish his classes before leaving for break. I saw this and though it looked fun. It was a really neat museum. Large section on dinosaurs, large section on the underground railway, and history of slavery. Large Native American displays, and lots of science stuff kid of mixed in. A big area with music science, another with lights. There were a few things for smaller children (like two dinosaur digs with rubber dirt, a climbing bridge that went up to a butterfly room, a small climbing wall, and an area with a real working (small) crane and some activities for smaller children. It was an interesting mix of seemingly unrelated areas, but provided several hours of entertainment for my son and I. Things that were interesting to adults and children. We didn't get to see the electricity show on the top floor, but other than that I think we hit most of the areas. We were there about 4 hours, which was a good attention span for a 14 year old.

Absolutely loved it here !! So much fun the dinosaurs were so realistic and actually scared me a few times when they moved lol. So many things you can actually play with and experience. I’m from out of town so I’m not used to there being a large deaf community in the area I was absolutely thrilled when I saw a very interesting holographic video playing of the women who shaped rochesters history signing in ASL. It really made my day. Also the museum is very we’ll kept the staff are very friends I has a wonderful time and would definitely go again.

Made a day-outing to Rochester from Buffalo to see the Women Changemakers Exhibit. This was an excellent exhibit with so many interactive/tech displays. We arrived at 10 am and didn’t leave until 1:30. There was so much information and it took a while to either read each women’s display notes and/or watch the explanatory videos. We learned so much about women from the Rochester area and the contributions they have made, or are making, in our global world. Rochester can be very proud! The exhibit was thoroughly planned and so well presented. We’ll be keeping track of future exhibits at this museum.

The museum is three floors with my visit limited to only the first floor.
The first floor is mostly the Expedition Earth & the Adventure Zone. The E.E. starts with small sea live exhibit before the end of the dinosaurs. There is one dinosaur-a Albertosaurus-65,000,00 years ago. Next is wildlife about 15,000 years ago with replicas of the Mastodon, Caribou, Raindeer & Muskox. Nearby is a replica of a mile high glacier, which a visitor can walk through along with much information. Also small wildlife of the modern era.
The Adventure Zone is mostly for the children. Exhibits are the Erie Canal-which a visitor can operate the locks-open & shut-and move a tug to the locks. Following exhibits are a sailing exhibit, a three life chair for different ages, a rock climbing wall a climbing slide structure, with netting-this exhibit was closed-ending with a Rain Garden Theater.
The second floor concerns the slavery of the United States & how the African-Americans were able to escape their predicament of slavery. In detail is the life & words of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, Austin Steward, Thomas James & Henry Brown. Much of the history includes some photographs from the 1850's, many prints/illustrations, & how the Underground Railway was used to Freedom.
After the African-American exhibit is the Native-Americans from the U.S., Central America & Canada. The U.S. Indians include Iroquois, Navajo, Pueblo, Indians of Peru & Guatemala, Indians of the Northwest, Plains & Southeast, Algonquian Indians of Canada. In glass cases are clothing, vases, blankets, weapons of war & masks. One interesting exhibit is the Iroquois Wood Carvings.
The Native-American exhibit is larger than the African-American, however both are interesting & educational.
Also on the second floor is "Iullumination" -The World of Light & Optics. The 'Galley'-which has something the way light works or affects our lives. The Forces of Nature and Science on Sphere-which is a 4-5 metric sphere that rotates while hanging from the ceiling-about weather patterns.
Other museum feature are: an elevator that services all three floors, restrooms on each floor, a fountain located on the second floor and a gift shop behind the admission booth.
A map of the third floor exhibits of: Rochester In 1838, The Changemakers-Rochester Women Who Changed the World & The Electricity Theater. With a short walk is the Strasenburg Planetarium. When the coronavirus calms down, I will retrn to visit the third floor and the planetarium.
My visit lasted about three & half hours that included photography-lighting is excellent-reading as much as possible, & talking with the staff. Each member I talked with was polite & answered all my questions.
There is no cafe, however within a 1/4 mile is Calabresella's On The Park-a sub/deli shop. The gentlemen at admissions helped with instructions to the shop. Walking only takes about 12-13 minutes.
Parking is what I would call a medium lot with at least 4 handicapped spaces, My visit was on a Saturday morning & afternoon, not many visitor. One staff member informed me during certain months there are student tours.
Hours: Monday-Saturday 9:30-4:30. Sunday 11:00-4:00.
Admission: Adults-$16.00. Senior & collage students-with ID-$15.00. Ages 3-18-$14.00.
I realize this is a long review for just three floors, however each floor is very detailed, well exhibited & displayed. Both floors are interesting, historical and educational. A visit is highly recommended for any length of time.

Strange combination of city of Rochester history exhibits, Native People’s exhibits, natural history exhibits, and a science museum. Most of the exhibits seemed dated and some were out of order due to Covid and some were just broken.
Been to other science museums in cities that are Rochester’s size (Toledo and Fort Wayne) that are more engaging for kids and more fun.
Not very cheap either at $16/adult and $14/kid. On the positive side, parking is free and while the cafe is closed due to Covid, they do allow you to bring in food and beverage and eat in the cafe seating area. Neighborhood around museum is very interesting with lots of historic mansions.

They have a cafeteria: lunch area downstairs. I believe you can bring your own lunch in. This museum is big enough to spend a few hours so definitely plan for a break/lunch time
