This is a lovely wooded area to hike near the Esopus. It has a few short trails that loop around. Take a photo of the map at the kiosk on Shady Lane before going because some areas are marked better than others. Most of the trails are easy to moderate in difficulty. This is a nice spot tucked away in Saugerties. There is very limited parking off Shady Lane.

This is a ridge overlooking the Hudson River just south of Kingston. Large parking lot. This place was originally a summer camp which closed way back in 1963. One of the lasting benefits is wide level former park roads as trails. Stretches of pavement still remain. Very kid and dog friendly. The wide trails keep everyone clear of ticks. The main trail ends at Esopus Lake, which I never knew existed! Even weirder is the upscale condo community on the opposite shore. This is a relatively small park and one could probably cover all trails in a couple hours.Easy hike.

This 160 acre jewel along the banks of the Esopus Creek is known for its trails and Nature Education walks. Dogs are permitted on leash in clearly marked areas. No biking or swimming allowed. Visit their website: esopuscreekconservancy.org for more info and trail map.

Esopus Bend is a wonderful conservation area brimming with birds, butterflies, and flora and faunna. It's free and the trails are well-maintained and can be walked easily. Their have been eagle sightings. The Preserve offers ample chances to visit with a knowledgeable guide, so that's another option to learn more around the natural area. The walks take you to an opening with a magnificent view of the Catskill Mountains and the upper Esopus Creek.

Well marked & cleared trails, easy hiking. Some wildlife, including deer, beaver, bald eagle...no facilities that I saw.

A fairly easy hike.. I was surprised to come out around houses as it was so peaceful. It was dog friendly as long as you clean up after them

Access is in the Barclay Heights section of the Town of Saugerties in what used to be called the Windamere section. The161-acre preserve located partially within both the village and town of Saugerties along a bend in the Esopus Creek. The property was at one time a working farm known as the Schroeder Farm but it has not been used for agriculture in over forty years and has now been reclaimed back to a natural ecosystem. I used to play in this area when I was a kid so for me to return and walk around was a real treat. Unfortunately I left my camera home.
I visited in early spring and many of the trails were not completely clear of the winter precipitation so footing was a bit tricky but there still were other people walking the trails too. Make sure to wear good boots as the trail can be muddy and covered with water at times. The preserve is open from dawn to dusk and has four different trails to explore.
The Schroeder Trail is a 1.2 mile trail follows an old farm road and footpath down to and along Esopus Creek. Part of the Schroeder Trail follows an old carriage road down to the Esopus Creek. In the early 1800s, horse-drawn carriages from Glasco followed this route to a scow ferry at Stony Point until the first bridge was constructed across the Esopus, reportedly in the 1830s.
The Meadow Trail leads to a restored meadow and to an area known as the cove, located across from Saugerties village beach.
The Wetland Trail leads to a wetlands area and all that these types of ecosystems offer.
The South Trail skirt the Esopus Creek south through a mixed hemlock forest, then turn inland into a deciduous ravine, following a year-round stream with a small cave and waterfall. The waterfall as it is called is now partially blocked by a washout of the bank of the trail just beyond the fencing that is up for the ravine.
There are scheduled events in the preserve that offer to educate and get people and more importantly kids interested in being outdoors. Great gem of place hidden by a housing development.

One of my favorite places to go hiking in the area. The paths take you right to the Esopus creek which is a hidden gem in Saugerties.

We love to go to different places to hike and this is one of our favorites. It has enough diversity to keep your heart pounding and gives you a good workout. The dog loves it.
