After visiting Lasell Park and the Palatine House, I drove to Schohaire Valley Railroad Museum. It is operated by the Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association.
What separates the Schohaire Valley Railroad Museum from other railroad museums is the multiple buildings that make up the museum. Most railroad museums have just one building.
Since I visited on a weekday, the museum wasn’t open, but I was able to tour the buildings from the outside.
I thought the best outdoor exhibit was the 1917 caboose from the Middleburgh and Schoharie Railroad. And, of course, having it outdoors likely makes it the most-photographed point of interest at the museum.
The Station House was a two-story red brick building with a roof that had a wide overhang which was a curiosity in and of itself. That building contained most of the museum artifacts.
The Mill Building was built similarly to a barn with wide front doors on the ground floor and another large door above in the loft.
The Freight Station was right next to the tracks behind the caboose. It would be easy to miss if one didn't know it was here.
The Weigh Station was adjacent to the road. I thought that was an interesting building. A train car with freight could pass under the portico on the side of the building and be rolled onto the scales for weighing.
There were a couple of small buildings beyond the Mill Building along with a freight car.
I would like to return on a weekend when all the buildings are open to get the full experience.
For the memorabilia and the number of preserved buildings in very good condition, I rate the Schohaire Valley Railroad Museum at 5.0.

This place is great to take photos of a old train car so bring. Your camera so if you are planning a trip out for a day. There's some old building you can check out

This was a great place to visit with my family. Educational and interesting for all of us. It did not take up much time so perfect for a quick stop in between other sites

On a visit to some local sites, we were lucky enough to come upon this gem of a museum. It may not be large, but the curator gives a wonderful tour. We were sad that hurricane Irene had taken some of the artifacts, but it was well worth the visit.

Lots of old rail cars on display as well as other buildings and weigh station. Terrific presentation and preservation. Good history of local area.

Many of the contents of this small museum were lost in the flood that damaged or wiped out a lot of this charming town. The drive and the scenery are beautiful. The village was featured on the Tonight Show in 2002. Unique rail cars, the old depot, the weighing station all are still here and being rehabilitated. I had a delightful talk with Andy, the head of the museum. I not only was impressed by his plans for the future, I truly admired a painting by Len Tantillo, one of my Favorite historical painters.

I work with the railroad. I was passing buy and just happened to stumble across this museum. I love trains and anything to do with trains. I enjoy learning anything about the past and where it has taken us today. If you and your family enjoy trains you will enjoy the Museum. Always stay on track.
