Tour of Kykuit ~ Rockefeller Estate

Way more than expected! Your tour starts at Philipsburg Manor, where you are bused to/from Kykuit. Our guide, Kelle, was wonderful! Her knowledge of the history surrounding the Rockefeller family, the construction of Kykuit, and their most impressive art collection coupled with her enthusiasm for sharing made for a great 2 hour tour.
The only way to improve upon this tour would be to allow the guides to be tipped!! We couldn’t thank Kelle enough!

Kykuit Grand Tour three hours but well worth it

Kykuit (pronounced KAI-CUT) is a former Rockefeller estate in Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County of New York. Three generations of Rockefellers lived here from the founder of Standard Oil (John D. Rockefeller) to Nelson Rockefeller, 3 term governor of New York and former vice president under President Ford.
Historic Hudson Valley offers tours of differing lengths, depending on how much time you want to spend: Selected Highlights 90 minutes $25, Classic Tour 2 hrs 15 mins $45, and the Grand Tour 3 hours $65. Check it out and book at hudsonvalley.org.
We took the Grand Tour and saw two floors of the mansion, the grounds and gardens, the art gallery, and the car barn where they keep the vintage cars and horse carriages. Our tour guide was Barbara Eckel, who was very knowledgeable.
We highly recommend the Grand Tour but just know that it is a long one so if you have young children, this may not be the tour for them. Also, try to book the early tours because there are many tours and they have to coordinate various groups moving through the house.

Lovely house tour, run by an offensive, greedy “not-for-profit”

Beautiful house and views. good guide. but HHV, an alleged not-for-profit, runs it like an offensive, money-grubbing business. If you “only” pay for the Highlights tour, not cheap at $26, they rush the group off the premises, whether the tour guide is done or not. You cannot stay a minute longer than you’ve paid for, even to enjoy the grounds. They give all kinds of ridiculous reasons, most of which reek of elitism and greed. I was there 20 years ago and it was nothing like this. I’ve also been to dozens and dozens of historic homes, and never had this kind of experience.

An excellent tour

We took the Classic Tour (first floor and grounds) on a beautiful day in August. You must park at Phillipsburg Manor (and check in at the gift shop) and then take a shuttle and leave virtually everything behind; only the tiniest of purses or bags are allowed. Our tour guide Barbara was excellent -- she spoke extensively about the estate, multiple generations of the family, the art and the grounds without any notes! The two hours passed quickly with so many interesting and beautiful things to look at. We were lucky to have just 4 of us on the tour, which made it even nicer, as we could ask all the questions we wanted and had a front row view in every room. I downgraded my rating from 5 only because I would have really liked to wander the grounds a bit after the tour or just stand on the terrace and admire the view, but this was not permitted, as everyone had to return together on the shuttle. Overall a lovely afternoon full of history and beauty.

Loved Kykuit!

We splurged and took the Grand Tour (3 hrs)on a Friday afternoon. I can hardly describe how wonderful this tour was! I’m certain our guide, Dana, made it most worthwhile, she was delightful with her wealth in facts and information describing details of the Rockefeller family and their home. Her stories made this family real. It was very obvious she loves what she does. The mansion is elegant and huge yet comfortable. The grounds are gorgeous with attention to detail obvious at every turn. The Grand Tour is the way to go! We will never forget our afternoon at Kykuit!

The Kykuit tour with Maura Bohan was so informative! What a great tour guide. Maura was engaging and so knowledgeable about everything in the house and on the grounds from the trees and landscaping to the artwork and the architecture. Really recommend this tour!

It was great place to visit but the rigid timed nature of the tour did not allow us time to enjoy the ambiance and modest opulence of the Rockefeller life style. The guide was not very accommodating in allowing any time to enjoy the garden or the house.

Would like to visit with less structured tour of the house and garden. Felt the grand tour was too long.

Need less formal but more accommodating experience to enjoy the house and gardens.

I had looked forward to visiting Kykuit primarily because the gardens looked spectacular from what I had seen online. You have to take a tour of the house to finally see the gardens. We took the shorter tour option. We went on the day when the temps were in the upper 70s, but humid. This was the main problem. There is no air conditioning in the house, and no windows were open. There were a couple of inadequate oscillating fans going. The rooms were smaller than you might expect, so all these factors combined made the house feel stifling and it got to the point where I couldn't wait to get out of there. Once in the garden, I felt like it was ok. We had to stay with the group and we didn't end up seeing some things that would have been interesting. I know a lot of people love this tour. It definitely would have been a more positive experience on a cooler day, or if they had found a way to make the house more comfortable. They tell you in advance there's no air conditioning but there should have been a way to get better airflow in there.
Compared to other tours I have taken of historic homes, this was not as enjoyable.
