Went in May. Did the following trails:
1). Heron Trail - pretty flat, good swamp/rookery at end
2). Lakes Trail - steep
3). Forest Ecology Trail - pretty flat, was buggy due to stagnant water
4). Eagle View Trail - pretty level to get to the bluffs, downhill/uphill to get to beach

I've always loved going to Sterling Nature Center for the forest trails, lakeside walks, swimming and exploring. So many trails it's easy to spend hours just wandering & never seeing the same place twice

Nice and easy hike around the lake.

Easy hike. Short Orange trail around the lake starts behind the Visitors Center. Respect the private property boundaries and enjoy the serene scenery of the pristine lake.

Beautiful place to visit

Due to an impending storm we were only able to walk from the parking area to the lake and along the shore to the Bluffs. Lots of great driftwood and flat rocks on the beach. Numerous people were enjoying the lake view and swimming in the lake. Lots of great picture opportunities! Can't wait to back and explore more!

Heron rookery especially good in June

We visited June to see the Great Blue Heron rookery, and it was great. I counted a minimum of 15 active nests, and there was lots of activity with adult herons leaving and returning to their nests to feed their young. While this is a beautiful place to visit any time, if you come in spring through mid July you get the bonus of seeing the rookery activities.

There are trails of various lengths, most of which are relatively easy and not especially challenging. My wife, who walks with a cane, was able to handle the Heron trail (around a mile round trip) without much trouble.

There's a small house-like building for the visitor center, and while a brief visit is worthwhile, it isn't extensive and the exhibits are fairly basic. We arrived at 10am on a Saturday and it was closed, but when we returned at noon it was open. The hours aren't posted anywhere on the building or online, as far as we could tell. One of the exhibits shows plans for a new, more modern facility; I couldn't tell whether this is coming soon or just a hopeful wish.

The views of Lake Ontario are nice (but no swimming or boating facilities here). We also saw a bald eagle during our visit.

This place may be a bit out of the way, but that's all the better, as far as the wildlife are concerned. Just don't be a doofus like the person with an unleashed dog that we encountered, and try to be quiet while there to avoid disturbing the birds and animals.

Nice nature walk

Was in town visiting family, lived in the area as a child and never had gone wish I had before now. We only got to spend a couple hours there due to rain. Nice trails and plenty of nature to take in. One trail leads you right down to the lake shore with view for miles and others along the lake and into the woods. Pack a lunch and make day of it. Will have to go back sometime to see the rookery in action.

Wow! Great trails!!

This was our first time at Sterling Nature Center, but it won't be our last. We took our dog with us. There are numerous trails, each one with different characteristics. There is a stand at the entrance that has trail maps with descriptions and it was refilled while we were there. The lady working at the nature center was very informative and friendly. We spent several hours waking the trails. You can customize your experience by selecting trails that interest you (forest, field, lake, pond, etc.) and keep the distance to your desired length. The trails were groomed well and there were none that we encountered that were too strenuous. Lots of wildlife present - frogs, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, variety of trees and growths, turtles. Some trails are in direct sun - others are under shaded canopies. There are benches along the way and observation points. So much to see!! This is a great place to explore!!

A must see & do

Took grandkids here to see the rookery in full swing. Early June. Great and kids loved it. Even got to see a bald eagle flying about 20 feet above our heads. Nature center is super, trails excellent and a beautiful lakeside walk.

Relaxing views, good hiking trails

This is a good place for all ages. They have shorter trails with amazing views of the lake and shore. The heron rookery is an amazing site. There is a small gift shop and learning/exhibit area in the building. Admission is free but we decided to get a membership ($25 for family) to help support the center , get a 10% merchandise discount, get a tax write off and learn about special member events. Look forward to returning and checking out other trails.

Wonderful nature and hiking venue on Lake Ontario

Wonderful county site for nature walks, picnics and hikes! I has asked about paddling and there is a canoe launch site just before the entrance. Here it looks like a nice Stillwater paddle on a creek but I'd suggest spring. We walked all the trails which added to several miles and enjoyed the well kept trails and sites. the Great Blue Heron rookery will be great in spring. There are other attractions nearby as well as a large state park to the west for campers nd the like. The Sterling site was great as we had it all to ourselves although the building itself was closed.
