Rode with VGR Castlemaine to Maldon and return. We did the Gold Pass with a foot plate ride thrown in .
The welcome by the volunteers at Castlemaine was very positive with staff showing great interest in their guests. Riding up front on the steam engine footplate for part of the way was great fun and gave a real insight into how the railways worked in the days of steam. The driver and fireman were friendly and very informative which made the experience enjoyable.
Rode in the Pullman car for the rest of the journey which has been restored to its old elegance. Also enjoyed a small cheese platter and a drink which was part of the package. It was a great experience enjoying the comfort of the old carriage with good conversation with the other like minded guests.

My husband and his friend did the driver experience and they had the best day. A big thank you to the team of volunteers who make this possible. We have ridden on many trains throughout the world but to actually drive a steam train under supervision was a bucket list item and did not disappoint in any way.
I spent the day as a passenger with my friend and we had a lovely day as well. This is an excellent experience, so if you are thinking of doing it ... just do it.

This is the second time I have journeyed on this train. The first time was just me and a friend, this time was with 6 family friends.
The rail carriages are genuine pieces of living history and beautifully restored.
The people working the train have a well humoured enthusiasm for the journey and make you feel welcome.
I haven't travelled this journey with my dogs yet but some carriages are dog friendly. Station staff includes a canine member who dutifully wears his hi-vis jacket.
Highly recommended

An excellent train trip hauled by steam locomotive.
First Class carriages excellent .
Bar is located in the Macedon carriage and the elegant Tambo carriage has a large lounge area and end viewing platform.
All in all a fantastic trip.

My son (who’s a train enthusiast) and I had a wonderful days adventure on this restored piece of history. Riding in 1st class was so much fun, we were in the 1920’s “Pullman” carriage but also had access to the Edwardian “Tambo” carriage. It was from there on the return trip that we were able to stand on the observation platform and watch the bush go by. We had such a great time that we sat at the Castlemaine station a few days later to watch the engine shunting carriages, then watched it depart Maldon and Muckleford the next day from our car! Great attraction for the area. We will be back,

We were gifted a voucher by our children for a first class return journey. The whole experience was memorable. The rolling stock was authentic in every way and the locomotive ( despite being oil-fired ) was a sight to behold. It was a pleasant walk to the Maldon shops after the outbound leg and there were lots of options to fill in the time before the return journey began. The volunteers who staffed everything were cheerful and knowledgeable. Thoroughly enjoyable!!

The train was a steam one and had been beautifully restored. It was fascinating seeing the high quality of the restoration - she is a grand old dame indeed. We were in first class and it was $70 each for a return journey to Maldon each way. You can order drinks or coffee and snacks on the train. Maldon is a pretty little town that has been classified by the National Trust. Two great pubs, lots of cafes, antique shops, home decor, local produce and clothing shops. So great train journey, great town, great retail therapy and great lunch at Maldon Hotel - the eggplant parmigiana was very good and the locals seemed to like the pub too. I highly recommend the staff on the stations and the train - nothing was too much trouble. They have theme nights and days eg Ales on Trails which is local beers served both legs of the trip and lunch is included or there is Murder on the Orient Express- dress up, watch the film, have a glass of something with perhaps a cheese platter

The first class experiance was awsome, the pulman carrige was in excelent condition, the attendants were excellent & the crowd were a pleasure to be with. The ride was excellent along with the view.

I don't often write reviews but this one deserves It...
The steam train into Maldon was a beautiful day, my partner and I were surprised at how much we enjoyed it. We went first class and we were definitely treated like first class passengers. I cannot fault any of it, the whole experience was fantastic.
The conductor was awesome, the train drivers were just as good, very knowledgeable and let us hop up to take a look at the engine.
Maldon the town was gorgeous (I sound like my mum now, an old lady 😳) but truly it was a fantastic day.
I definitely recommend it, it's very much a chill out day.... No judging but we did it with a hangover 👍

it was good to see old Tambo again and the older BCPL and PL carriage plus few old wooden bodied cars running and the sound of unwelded short track length and steam loco working,
Your Team did a lovely job on straightening out Tambo's rooftop your repair work did not go unnoticed.

It is all on the website. Seniors get a "concession" fare. On a return ticket it is $45 economy and $65 first class fare ($5 off).

Hi, Yes we run all year around every Sunday and Wednesday although only Sundays in February.
During summer we generally run a diesel locomotive but chekh closer to the time. Otherwise we run steam locomotives.. Bookings can be made on line at our web site
