It wasn't easy to find the entrance to Old Sulehay nature reserve, even with the directions in the Wildlife Trust handbook and a Satnav. Eventually, it was my Ordnance Survey app that came to the rescue. If you haven't got that facility to fall back on, I guess the best advice is to look for tell-tale cars of other visitors parked at the side of Sulehay road and check out nearby footpaths for the Wildlife Trust badger face symbol.
Once you do find it, Old Sulehay is a very attractive nature reserve. There is an area of limestone hillocks, interspersed with stands of silver birch. Here, there are numerous badger setts. I was here on a very cold, grey, windy day and wildlife was, very sensibly, keeping a low profile but I'm certain there's be a much better chance of spotting a badger venturing from its home when the weather's more clement. The adjacent woods look and feel very old and the main pathway through forms a very pleasant walk - maybe an hour to the far end and back - longer, obviously, if you're taking detours to either side and stopping to look and listen. The forest floor, when I visited, was sprinkled with the white blooms of wood anemone and I would imagine bluebells will replace them soon. I spotted a glow-wrom larva, which excited me but which, apparently is not unusual. Apparently, come the dusk, these luminescent insects illuminate the woods.
A very pleasant visit and I shall certainly return some time to experience Sulehay in the sunshine.

We struggled to find here but when we did it was worth it

Old Sulehay Forest is a 34.8 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of King's Cliffe in Northamptonshire.
I visited earlier today and had a good walk around particularly in the forest which is a short distance from the reserve.
There is access by footpaths from Wansford Road however as i was driving,i managed to park in a small gravel type layby close to the Ring Haw entrance.
There are many species of bird as well as grazing sheep and cattle.
I managed to see Bullfinch,Redkite and a Woodpecker and walked a short distance past some black sheep.
Dogs are allowed on lead and there is no entry fee.
The tracks are easily walkable but some can become muddy,i encountered a few as i approached the forest.
The best part about my visit to this nature reserve was just how peaceful it was...and i did not meet a single soul throughout my 1 hour visit.
