When you are a kid you navigate your childhood reading always wondering if giants really exist... and if they do... what would they look like? I think they would be like Map. Bold with a purpose.
This statue has been named Map Kernow being the Cornish dialect for 'Son of Cornwall'. It was unveiled in 1988 by the Minister of Mines and Energy, the Hon. Ron Payne.
The Rotary Club of Kaunda were responsible for the fundraising and the project management for Map. The body frame of this statue is steel tubing with a concrete base. Welded to this are horizontal rods which give support to him. The body is sculptured from cold case bronze (bronze and resin reinforced with fibreglass matting and wire netting).
The Sculptor for this was Ben Van Zetten. Ben has done other major works such as a giant koala ( named Sam), a bust of Paul Hogan , Curio ( a brumby) and many other works.
Map depicts a Cornish miner of the nineteenth century in his working clothes. A resin hardened felt hat protects a miners head and a candle to provide light is on the rim. Spare tallow candles hang by their wicks around his neck. In his left hand there is a mallet and a Cornish pick is held over his right shoulder.
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Cornwall was the major copper and tin mining centre of the world and the miners from here were considered the best. Many of them made their way to South Australia.

Visited on Wednesday 11th March. Very interesting and well worth checking out. Info boards give you the history of the town and connection with Cornwall UK.

A large statue of one of the old Cornish Miners that originally settled in the region. Stands amongst the ruins of some buildings. Also has a rest area here as well. Quite lovely actually.

We stopped off for a rest break & this big guy is quite a sight, well worth stopping to have a look.
Disappointed though there was no water available that we could find. A tap yes, but no water, thirsty dog had to wait.

I stopped here during the filming of Haunting: Australia and played my guitar at Maps feet. I also have photos of the original Map being built back in the late 1980s before he was burned down!
