This is one of the most beautiful Canadian national park. It is a must...at least once on your lifetime. The rugged coastline, the wildlife and sea life will amaze you.

Several issues
Nova Scotian drivers are very unkind to tourist, they tail gate & dangerously pass in very bad ( foggy) conditions
What’s this about forced tipping when paying restaurant bill, esp in Ingonish. Not good🫤.
Also can’t use public BR any where. Great way to lose business. As soon as we see the sign on business door we walk away.. hopefully other people will too. They are suppose to be so friendly here… not really
Older staff in information Center not nice o helpful at all, quite rude. They need to change the staff

This is a huge park, the Cabot trail (road) goes around the outside of the park, trails are located off this road. There are approx. 30 trails located along the edge of the park, the website gives a brief description of each. We were keen to hike along the trails with coastal views, many only have glimpses of the ocean, the growth of the trees has made some of the trail descriptions out of date. Some trails are also shortened due to erosion, most have this warning on the website. We only explored the Cheticamp side of the park, the area closer to Sydney may have had better views. You need to buy a park pass to use the Cabot trail, approx $80 for the week, $16 a day, from the Park centre. We did not use the weekly pass enough so should have paid the daily rate. The Cabot Trail (road) has some spectacular look outs you pull into to view the coast line, this is also where some of the walks start. You will do a lot of driving to get around the edge of the park.

We spent 3 days in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and surroundings. Our favorite hikes (in order) were White Point (not in the park itself), Skyline Trail, Broad Cove Mountain, MocIntosh Brook, and Benjies Lake This was traveling with 2 small children.
We were based in Cheticamp, and really preferred the stunning views on the drives on the west side of the park. I could easily spend 4-5 days in the park. Cheticampe was a great base between proximity to the views/ hikes we preferred, Coop grocery store, and selection of restaurants.

The drive around the Cabot Trail offers gorgeous scenery and lots of twists and turns, and things to see and do on the way (numerous look-out points, hikes, restaurants, beaches etc.). We drove counter-clockwise from Baddeck so the water was always on our right. We travelled the Cabot Trail on a Tuesday and never felt crowded. We missed out on Skyline Trail hike because capacity was reached, so go earlier in the day if that's on your to do list.

Amazing trails as always. Just make sure you book the right place to stay for easy access to multiple trails at once without too much driving around. I always go to Ingonish as it's the center of most.

We just finished a three-day tour of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The park and the Cabot Trail are a lifetime level of experience. There are campgrounds, trails, and a variety of experiences for the entire family.
A not to miss hike is the world-famous Skyline Trail located about 15 minutes from the Cheticamp Visitors Centre. In addition, there are a number of pull-off vistas along the road(Cabot Trail) that offer amazing views across the horizon.
We'll definitely be returning. Remember, there are no gas stations or restaurants located within the National Park itself. We made sure our tank was full each day before adventuring out from Cheticamp.

Our expectations were very high but we were not as excited as we had hoped. The views along the Cabot Trail were nice but just a lot of trees for most of the way. We did the Skyline trail but it was hot and crowded with the same views you could get at any overlook. Other hiking trails were also just ordinary walks.

We stayed in the park for 9 days and hiked most of the available trails. Interesting trails lasting from 15 minutes to 3-4 hours. Trail heads very well marked, with the exception of Aspy Mountain.

Thinking about staying here from the 17-22nd of August. We normally camp at Provincial parks as they are more private and not as busy. Any sites you recommend that are more private or wooded?

I am planning to visit the Cabot trail in next week on 13th October 2019. I wanted to know if this is the right time to see the stunning fall colours or should I postpone my plan by 2-3 weeks. I will really appreciate if you could share some of the pictures you have captured during your last visit.

Hi, I went in the summer. I wouldn’t be able to tell you what is the best time to see the colors.
Have fun on your trip, but try to avoid the rain because driving conditions won’t be optimal.

Hi,
We are planning a trip to Cape Breton National Park. We will have 4 nights in the area and have a 37 foot 5th wheel camper. I was thinking we would stay at Baddeck and then spend time at Chetticamp. Does this seems like the best way or should I find a centralized campsite where we can spend all four nights and make day trips from there? Thanks in advance for your insights.

Not sure where you would find a ‘centralised’ base; Baddeck is probably a good place to base yourself. You can get to Chetticamp from there easily (and also up to Ingonish if you want).. Unfortunately, we have no experience of driving a long camper!
But Baddeck certainly has a lot going for it compared to other ‘towns’ in the area. From there you can get to all the sights and trails.
Chetticamp was well worth the visit and the coastline on that shore is wonderful. The Eastern shore is not spectacular in the same way.

We didn’t book in advance because we wanted to stop each day where we fancied depending how much time we spent in any one place. We didn’t find this a problem and just booked using the internet and phone. It’s a lovely easy drive and but not as remote as we expected. Hope this helps. Enjoy your drive!

Hi, I am currently planning our summer vacation and would like to visit CBHNP on our way to Gros Morne NP. We will be driving from Montreal and were thinking of 3 nights at CBHNP and maybe 3 nights on our way home (after a week at Gros Morne). Although we could do a different park on the way home (Fundy?). We have 2 children, 9 and 7 and will be tent camping. We also have a dog. I am unsure which area to camp in in CBHNP that would be the most suitable. Is there a more pet friendly area? We are all avid hikers and swimmers. I will also be in full Ironman training so any locations where I can get some long runs and swims in would be appreciated (so my coach won't get too mad at me). Thanks in advance!!!

CBNP is the right choice for the kids, camping, and dog. The views are stunning and not limited the way which Fundy might be limited to just the tidal flows (which is no small thing). However, CBNP is very cool and full of wildlife (be aware of the coyotes and wolves with the dog). There is the town of Chetticamp on the north side of the island which has great music, food, pubs, and people. You can't go wrong with either choice but for me the clear choice is CBNP. PS. I love your beautiful country and all of those great folks I've met there. Canadian's have much to be proud of, to be sure.

Sample ten short trails in one day, exploring a variety of habitats – Acadian, Boreal and Taiga - to earn a souvenir magnet. Easily done at a leisurely pace if you walk regularly. Bring in a signed list or photo documentation (a photo of you on each trail) to either park visitor centre.

The Skyline Trail looks great for my husband and I and our 10 year old golden retriever. Are there similar trails (not to technical and under 4 miles total) that you could recommend within the park?

Ellen, The best thing to do is to talk with the rangers. But, try White’s Point. Not technically in the park. You could pack a lunch and walk out to the very end and back of White’s Point or less distance. Beautiful scenery. Nice rocks to sit on. Also consider walking the grounds of Gampo Abbey, in Pleasant Bay, also outside of the park, as long as your dog is quiet. Short 15 min walk down to Mary Ann Falls if your dog can do stairs. Also you all can take a dip. Wear your suits.

Is the daily rate per day (enter park on Wednesday leave on Friday = 3 days) or per 24 hour period (2 24 hour periods = 2 days of fees)? Thanks!

When you pay it’s about 24 hours you have to use it.
For example... we entered the park at approximately 11am Saturday morning. We had till Sunday 4pm the next day till it expired.

We stayed in Ingonish at Broad Cove Campground. Lots of great hikes and sites within short driving distance from Ingonish.
