I've lived in NS for 23 years and never took the ferry to Big Tancook Island. This is a great year for exploring NS so that's exactly what my husband and I did. There's not much on the Island but I still fell in love with its charm and easy way of life. There's one restaurant that wasn't open while we were there (bring snacks just in case) but I think there's a couple of food trucks in the summer. It's nice to walk around despite the dirt roads and talk to the locals. We also enjoyed some unexpected and unique geocaches (there are about 40 on the island)! The Wishing Stones craft store and museum was a nice little stop as well. We'll definately do a day trip again later this summer and enjoy another step back in time!

The trip out was wonderful and the island has changed little over the years. The challenge is finding parking on the mainland. Leave plenty of time as the locals are understandably touchy with their space.

My husband and I visited your beautiful Island yesterday. The Rec Center was very welcoming by a young man pleasantly answering questions to tourists.
We had walked to the gift shop/museum/library . It was very hot . Three lovely women were there , Grandmother ,daughter and Granddaughter. Great shop exceptional service. The grandmother ,Martha Farrah drove us back to the ferry so we wouldn’t have to walk in the heat .Thank you Martha! We were able to enjoy a cold drink ,the beautiful scenery at a little restaurant to your left as you get off the ferry . Great service !

Search for beach glass or walk the roads of this island fishing community . Ocean and salt air is nectar for the soul.

Big Tancook is an inexpensive 50 minute ferry trip (one way) from Chester. The ferry has a very small outdoor viewing deck (upper level), so arrive early and head up quick if you want a spot. There is plenty of indoor seating, but it's hard to see through the grimy windows. Day-trippers can head back after a minimum 2-hour stay. The island is NOT equipped for those with mobility challenges. If you don't have a bike, be prepared for a lot of walking. Definitely bring a stroller for little ones. During our 2-hour visit, we enjoyed hunting for beach glass near the ferry wharf, but didn't have nearly enough time to walk across the island to the art gallery we'd heard about. Instead, we hung out at the playground across from the Visitor Centre (where the bathroom is) and got an ice cream at the single cafe we found (you'll know "Mean Carolyn" when you meet her). We would have liked more time, but it was very hot and staying another 3 hours with limited facilities and tiring elders & younger ones felt like too much. I'm glad we visited, but it was a lot of effort to get over for what we were able to see. Definitely a glimpse into a very different way of life.

Different way to view surrounding waters of Mahone Bay starting with a ferry ride from beautiful Chester. A visit to Tancook is a great way to spend a day to relax and learn the history of the area.

Just a short public ferry ride from the wharf in Chester Basin we visited when we were children and now this past summer. In the award-winning novel, "Rockbound", Tancook (disguised) became the novel's Outer Island. I reacquainted my self with South Shore charm by listening to the audio version of the novel in my car and I reacquainted myself with the fantasies of Tancook Island whilst walking around dreaming of bygone eras in simpler times. Tancook is not so much touched by the problems of our times.

A nice place for a mostly quiet and relaxing day. Nice beach with crystal clear water to swim or just to sit on the beach and relax. Natives are friendly and I have found very helpful in answering questions or giving directions. And whoever heard of a ferry, (which you must take to get to the island), captain, after getting a call from someone back on shore I suspect, turning back to port to pick up a couple passengers who arrived late for the ferry. Life on the island us different to be sure, just make sure you bring your relaxing self.

We went to Tancook with my young kids on an extremely hot day. The only way to explore the island is walk or you can rent a bike, but with two little kids, walking is really the only option. Amazingly, we made it over to the beach, which I think if you were only adults you could walk in 20 minutes, but with kids in tow, we were probably 45 minutes. There is a really nice store/museum close to the beach and the lady there was lovely and shared some stories about the island. The beach had lots of beach glass and the water was quite warm for the kids. The locals are very welcoming and everyone waves as they pass by. After we hiked in the blazing heat back to the ferry (mostly carrying our kids) we made a stop at Carolyn’s for an ice cream. The lady working was very pleasant and answered all my questions about the island (I don’t think it was the owner). The island could really cash in on tourism, if they had a few more shops, carriage rides around the island or whatever, but it seems they made very little effort. I recognize that locals may prefer it that way. What the island really needs is a public washroom/outhouse near the beach. The only public washroom is near the docks. Overall, it is definitely worth the ferry to make the trip over to Big Tancook, but if you can rent a bike I would highly suggest to do so. It would be nice to see some other way to get around and see this quaint island especially for those with mobility issues or small kids.

My wife and I, brother and sister in law and their grandson recently took ferry over to this location as my wife has family buried in local cemetery!
Unfortunately don’t think locals are interested in either promoting their island or cashing in on tourist dollars. Locals we met were very friendly and easy going but unless you can ride a bicycle or make arrangements to access a car you will be walking on gravel roads! Too bad some enterprising person couldn’t hitch up a hat wagon with some horses and offer rides around the island to visit places like the museum( very nice and worth checking out) , the beach which we weren’t able to reach as too far to walk, restaurants (2) at ferry crossing , cemetery or I’m sure other parts of island we didn’t get to visit!
I guess most make enough money fishing so not
interested in making extra??? It was a beautiful sunny day and the young gal artist had some beautifyl paintings which I am sure she wanted to sell but was too far from main road to have a closer look!
Just my observations from someone who has travelled extensively to even more remote areas where locals see the value of tourism!

Hi there! I am wondering what is open on the island for food/coffee on Saturday January 16th? My 3x great grandfather is resting there and I want to come pay my respects.

Are dogs allowed on tancook ferry?

ลือเนนบูร์ก, แคนาดา7 ผลงาน
Yes, dogs are allowed on ferry but can only go inside in a carrier.
I’m considering buying a home on Big Tancook Island. Without a vehicle on the island, how will I get my furniture delivered to my home?

A minor problem. It depends on how much you have. The ferry can be used for vehicle transport up to 23 feet in total length, a regular van. If a longer vehicle is being used you can hire the barge to take it over. Go to Tancook Island website for assistance with some of your queries.

Does the ferry run year round? Earliest ferry out? Latest ferry back?
Mountie65

Yes the ferry would have to run year round in order to provide goods to the island. Remember the ferry crosses salt water so it would not freeze up!
The crossings I wouldn’t think would have the same regular runs as in the summer! The island would best be visited in the summer months ideally August: September for ideal conditions.

Does the ferry often fill up? We would like to go to Tancook Sunday and we wouldn’t want to drive 300 km to Chester to find that the 10:20 AM Ferry was booked solid.
What time would we have to arrive to ensure this wouldn’t happen?

Hard to tell at this time of year. The ferry fills up fast.
