Yesterday my better half and I treated ourselves to an incredible experience. As we celebrated some significant dates this year we treated ourselves to what can only be described as above 1st class treatment. We went on the Golden Arrow Steam experience but we went Pullman Class!
The food was amazing - 11 courses throughout the day, the service exemplary our stewards Krydtian and Mark gave us an impeccable service - Champagne Bellini's on first boarding - further Champagne and wine - enough coffee to float a battleship, on board a luxury Pullman Coach being pulled by the magnificent Brittania 70000 locomotive ..
Out of Stowmarket to London with a 5 course breakfast on route to a lunch break at Canterbury before steaming South to Dover, across the South coast to the sunset as we started the return leg back home whilst being treated to a 6 course culinary delight. An entirely unforgettable experience.

Had a really nice time on the Golden Arrow trip down to Canterbury, from the moment we boarded the friendly yet professional staff could not do enough to make the day memorable. We were in coach D , Pullman dining ,and the whole experience was excellent. The two young members of staff really excelled in looking after all the guests needs aboard and as this trip started in Norwich at 6 am this would’ve been a very long day at work for them. We boarded at our station at 7.30 am and our comfy armchair window seats awaited, the tables are laid out beautifully and this really does feel like a special environment. The journey itself is long as the train winds its way around London to the west before the steam engine takes over and we continue on around and out towards the Kent countryside however with bright sunny weather the views out the window were great, all the while we are being looked after with teas coffees ,breakfast, pastries etc..Arriving into Canterbury just before 1pm we had just over 3 hrs or so to take the short walk into town . The whole train is very long so the actual steam engine (Britannia) sits beyond the platform area at Canterbury so initially was a little disappointed there may not be a very good opportunity for a photo but the staff assured us we would stop on our return leg shortly after departure, so a short stop at Dover priory station and we did get to see the steam engine up close. So back on board the great service continued with a really lovely dinner, champagne & wine , canapés, starters, mains, a cheeseboard then desert and all very tasty, still or sparkling water was included and even the choice of additional alcoholic drinks were reasonably priced. During dinner the journey whizzed by but the section around inner London did feel slow however once we were out on the main line again the train whipped along. It was a thoroughly nice day out and an amazing experience to treat yourself to.

What a fantastic day out!
I was initially disappointed to find that our train (from Colchester) was being pulled by a diesel engine, but all that changed in London as we were hooked up to a stunning steam locomotive for the ride into and around Kent. The sights, sounds and smells made it as romantic as it sounds, complemented by flawless service of the very highest level.
We were looked after by Declan and Lucy, both of whom (as well as their colleagues) went out of their way to anticipate and meet any of our needs. The food was excellent - every course a picture - with cocktails and canapés all part of the package.
It's an amazingly relaxing way to spend a full day, from early in the morning to late at night, enjoying the views from the train, chatting to other passengers and the staff, reading or just dozing in the sunshine, all to the soundtrack of the puffing engine at the front. Utter bliss.

Absolutely amazing day, long (06:00 to 00:20) but amazing. I booked this to celebrate hubby's 60th.
We joined the train at Peterborough at the same time as the crew who had travelled by coach from Crewe. Within minutes Bev welcomed us on board and served coffee. The tables were laid with crisp white table cloths, glasses and branded cups with a nice pamphlet about the route for the day.
The tea and coffee flowed all day until we left London to return. The diesel connections were long and tiring, the steam was glorious. Carriage J was cold but the crew did all they could to make us comfortable with blankets and pillows if needed and turned the Aircon off. Snack boxes were served morning and afternoon. Pear cider in the morning and bubbly wine in the afternoon.
There are 3 classes of seat, standard (just a seat) first class (coffee and snacks, not dining as others have said) and pullman (this is the full dining experience). See the pictures of snack boxes. You can take your own food and drink on standard and first class.
Bev was on the go the whole time serving drinks and making sure everyone was happy. She even went out of her way to make hubby's birthday special with a mini cake, candle and sang happy birthday to him.
We did get delayed by national rail and were 30 minutes late getting to Canterbury. 30 minutes late leaving there too due to a late national rail train so didn't get 20 minutes in Dover where we were hoping to meet family if only for a few minutes and a hug. That ended up being a wave past but the grandkids still loved it.
Would we go again - yes definitely but maybe not such a long one as hubby has a bad back.

We took the Golden Arrow trip yesterday and cannot praise the staff enough for the wonderful experience we enjoyed in the Pullman Dining class. Despite working a very long shift they remained polite, professional and very cheerful right up until we disembarked at the end of a very long day out. The food and drink was very good considering the tiny kitchen the chefs work in so great praise to them too, but a special mention to our lovely stewardess Aga. We would highly recommend this trip and will definitely use Saphos trains again though sadly not many of their trips pick up where we live.

On the 2nd October my wife and I joined "The Golden Arrow" train at the unearthly time of 6:00 am for a day travelling through parts of the Home Counties to Canterbury. With several pick-ups en-route, we didn't reach Canterbury until about 13:30. Departure from Canterbury was a little late at 16:20 due to an over-running public train service. Initially hauled outbound by a classic Class 47 diesel, this was changed for steam engine "Britannia" in west London with a change-over on the home bound leg.
We had opted for the Pullman class which meant a luxurious coach setting with linen tablecloths, china crockery, silver plated utensils and good quality glassware. There were never-ending supplies of tea and coffee, a very tasty cooked breakfast, hot drinks and pastries late morning and a multi-course dinner on the way home. With my wife having specific vegetarian dietary needs, it was reassuring and a welcome relief to find catering staff who actually cared about her enjoying the food as much as those of us with less or no dietary restrictions. In no small way this contributed very significantly to her enjoyment of the day.
We enjoyed being able to have conversations with the staff (when they weren't just about to carry out some task) and we noted at how well they worked as a team whilst remaining cool, calm and collected when dealing with passengers or unexpected delays in progress of the train. Even during the later hours of the evening when, since we joined at the first pick-up, we were the last to disembark at 00:20 the following morning - ouch !! We felt sorry for the staff who were still on board since they would not be getting home until between 3:00 am and 4:00 am having joined the train perhaps 24 hours earlier.
Would we travel with Saphos Trains again ? You bet - although with advancing years we will probably not choose a tour with such a long working day.

My wife and I went on the Golden Hind to Plymouth. We joined the train at Shrewsbury. We had a fabulous experience from start to finish. It was a very long day but the staff on board dealing with us - carriage A - were absolutely excellent. They were all professional and friendly. The whole day, including the food, will linger in or memories for a very long time. We are considering going on another of their trips as a result of this experience.

Lovely experience. Cannot fault the service. We travelled first class, was excellent. Lovely afternoon tea too. Had a nice few hours in Plymouth too. Great day. Steam engine on the train from Taunton to Plymouth and diesel to Abergavenny. This was fine. I would recommend this trip to anyone

We have never been to Canterbury so took the opportunity to visit on a Saphos trip. We had the Dining Experience and the food and service were first class. The staff were so attentive and a pleasure to be with. Canterbury certainly worth visiting and we will be going back to stay for a few days.
This was not our first Saphos trip and most certainly not our last - Scotland next.

My husband and I had a great day out to Canterbury. We booked the fine dining and enjoyed every moment of it. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was lovely. We had 3 hours in Canterbury and enjoyed walking around the city as we had never been before. It was a sunny warm day which made the trip even more enjoyable. We will be booking another trip next year!

What is it like to board the train? Is it a big step up or the same as a modern train?

Not something I paid much attention to as for me boarding was easy. The staff are so good any boarding difficulties will be addressed quickly and efficiently. If you are concerned about boarding let Saphis Trains know before you travel.
