The road up to the fort is not for the faint hearted but once you get there the views are stunning. There is a small free car park at the site with a short walk up to the fort. All the remains are clearly labelled well worth a visit.

Lord knows what Italians, fresh out of sunny Rome, would have made of being posted here 2,000 years ago, for this is frontier country, and I can only assume it must have been where they sent the naughty boys.
It's not easy to get to either. Hardknott Pass will test your driving skills to the limit, or your fitness if you travel by foot, but it is worth it. The remains are all well signed with information boards, and the views are spectacular, even on a cold wet day.
One last tip, make sure you're wearing substantial footwear, amd if it's wet, as it was when I went, Wellington boots are essential.

Na de belevenis van de Hardknott pass kwamen we bij het Hardknott fort. Hooggelegen tref je dit de restanten van dit oude Romeinse fort aan. Als je net de pas hebt gereden besef je hoe knap het voor de Romeinen om hier te komen en een fort te bouwen. En dit alles in een prachtig landschap!

Really interesting place to visit. Good amount of the ruins still remaining.A lot bigger than I expected. 5 minutes walk from the carpark.

Worth a visit if you are going by, if you aren’t to confident as a driver maybe don’t attempt the drive. The views are stunning and it’s amazing to think of a Roman camp way up on these hills. Walls remain on the site and lots of information on boards around giving info on what everything is.

The remains of the fort are located just a short distance off the Hard Knott Pass Road. There is a small car park but between this and the fort itself is some boggy ground so good footwear is recommended.
The views from the fort itself are spectacular and we were fortunate to visit on a sunny clear day. There are good information boards all around the remains of the fort which provide simple explanations of the original lay out. A good half hour stop if travelling around the area.

Walked up to the fort from the Woolpack, along the opposite side of the valley. Lovely walk - steep up to the fort! Well worth it though as we ate our sandwiches in one of the old tower bases with stunning views to Scafell Pike in one direction & the Irish Sea in another. Tough boys those legionaries (mind they did have baths, solid stone walls, fresh bread daily, & a drop of imported vino to make life in such an isolated fort bearable) though!

We walked up from the Woolpack Inn where we were staying. We spent about 30 minutes wandering round. It's complete enough to see where the buildings were and imagine what it must have been like. The views are amazing too.

stunning setting for this well preserved & partially restored roman fort. a challenging drive from the east to get to it but well worth the effort

Amazing, but be aware that driving to the top is incredibly difficult and dangerous.
Once on the top, the rewards are there. Amazing views and fabulous nature.
Must visit when you're in the area.

Have English Heritage “rebuilt” the fort? My wife and visited over 30 years ago and neither of us could recall such obvious shells of buildings and towers! It remains a fantastic site though!!

Actually I have to take back everything I wrote since I misread the query. Housesteads Roman Fort has the features mentioned in my answer, but Hardknott does not. In fact you can't get anywhere near it in a wheelchair. You will see nothing. There is no access over even remotely flat ground, and no proper paths. It's all rough ground and the fort is over the crest of a hill so that you can see little or nothing from the road. Also, the road approaching the fort is horrible, so is a bit of an ordeal to reach the site. Sorry for the confusion.
