First Class Service - the staff at Ravenglass were incredible. We had been stuck in traffic and were running a few minutes behind -
We rang ahead and explained and enquired about swapping tickets for the next available train unfortunately that train was full. The staff explained the train would have to set off on schedule but did all they could to help us get on it including allowing us to pay for the car park on our return and waiting outside with our tickets and showing us to our seats.

The lady in the gift shop at Dalegarth was super knowledgable an d helpful in helping us devise a bespoke walk to ensure we were back in time for our return train whilst still meeting our needs. Absolutely above and beyond - thank you so much to all at Ravenglass.

Firstly this little railway is a gem of a day out and we really enjoy our rides on the trains.
Today I was disappointed to discover that you have to book specific trains and specific seats on the trains. Pre covid you were able to buy a ticket and ride as many times as you wanted in a day - we used this freedom to jump off at different stops and explore different walks from these stops and then jump back on at another stop. Our day ended with a bit of family fun called 'chase the train' while one person drove along the roads and 'waved' at us from the different points you can see the train, while the rest of us took advantage and had another ride up the valley.
I appreciate this booking system helps but If I remember rightly the later trains of the day ended up with more carriages as needed on the day and people were always sensible and got back to their starting point at the end of the day, so it wasn't a problem before. I also felt the lady I spoke to at the ticket office who pointed out this hadn't been the case in the 3 years she had worked their came across as a little rude and off putting, and while I am sure she didn't mean it this way it was slightly off putting.

Dear Nick Thank you for taking the time to post your Railway Review. I am glad that you think we are a Gem and enjoy riding on our trains. We are in our fifth season of operating the current approach to ticketing which began during the Covid Pandemic. The Pandemic acted as a catalyst for change but equally so have been economic factors. The costs of running the railway have exploded exponentially. In harsh terms if we returned to how we used to operate the railway would not survive for future generations to enjoy. Most of our trains are now 9 coaches long. Traditionally it used to be 8. 9 coaches is the limit of what can fit comfortably on the platforms at Ravenglass. I am sure our staff member in the Ticket Office was not being rude to you. We endeavour to look after our staff both paid and voluntary. Sadly a trend since Covid has been for some of our visitors to use them as verbal punchbags. This is something that really isn't acceptable but it is becoming the norm and is more prevalent when we are busy. All our team are incredibly dedicated and care about the railway and its visitors but whereas traditionally they seemed quite relaxed often these days I see them on edge which I find very sad. Once again thank you for taking the time to post your review. We hope to see you here at Ravenglass again soon. Who traditionally won the race, train or car?!!! Kind regards Stuart @ R&ER

The ride went through countryside that was mostly low farmland and this area is not as spectacular as others in the Lake District. However, it was a pleasant way to pass the time. I tried to walk to the waterfall at the Eskdale end but realised i should have booked a later train back to do this in comfort. It was a little surprising to see the carriages i booked had a roof, but no doors so if you have a dog, make sure it doesn't leap out! It's a small train and tall people might struggle to sit comfortably given limited headroom. I did hit my head once getting out. I wish i had brought a cushion as the seats were hard! Nothing like as spectacular as say, the Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge steam train ride, but i enjoyed it.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and photograph of your visit, it looks like someone had a comfortable seat! Whilst we may not have some of the spectacular mountain views of parts of the Lake District or that of our friends at the Vale of Rheidol Railway, we are very proud of the scenery our trains run through. Eskdale is a special place. Dalegarth station is one of the few stations in England where you can see a mountain top to bottom from the platform, as long as its not raining of course! Our open and semi open carriages do not have doors. We do post safety signage in each compartment advising passengers to keep children and small dogs to the side which is fully enclosed. If you visit us again you may like to try out 1st Class carriage, dogs are welcome to travel in this vehicle. Gives great views and comfortable seating. Just right before a second attempt at the waterfalls. Once again thank you for taking the time to post your review and we hope to see you and your four legged companion at the railway again in the future. Kindest regards Stuart @ R&ER

Couldn’t believe the countryside we went through, and the length of the railway, although only 15 inch gauge it was run just like a main line system both end stations at ravenglass and at dalegarth were well staffed spotlessly clean with good services for travelling passengers. We had a great day on the railway and got some really good photos.

Dear John Thank you for posting your heartfelt review of your visit to us. I am really pleased you not only enjoyed the journey through some of the Western Lake Districts best scenery but found the railway to be friendly and professional. Reviews like yours are really appreciated by our paid and voluntary staff at this time of year, it helps create a good deal of positivity as we move towards the main summer season. Once again thank you and we will certainly look forward to welcoming you back to the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway in the future. All the best Stuart @ R&ER

The ravenglass train experience is a credit to the many volunteers who make it happen. The journey lasts about 30 minutes and winds through the west lakes district countryside. Not mush to see at Dalegarth but the return journey was just as pleasant. Only issue was the tiny nature of the cabins, for a large man not so easy to get in. A great day out for a family.

Dear Mark Thank you for taking the time to post a review and photographs of your visit to us. Really pleased to receive a review from someone who has come all the way from the other side of the world to visit us! Really pleased to hear that our paid and voluntary staff looked after you well, they all care very passionately about the railway. If the weather is right it is worth taking a little time at Dalegarth to explore Eskdale further, there are some hidden gems. Our coaches are a little cramped. The enclosed coaches date from the 1960s and the design of our open coaches goes back to the 1890s. We are currently working on plans to renew the fleet but with 45 vehicles this will be a long term and expensive project. Once again thank you and if you are ever back in the UK again we hope you will visit us again, Kind regards Stuart @ R&ER

We booked the pie & mash evening train ride, and it was a brilliant night out. The staff/volunteers are all friendly & knowledgeable. The ride on the train we comfortable and the views as we went along were spectacular, such a beautiful area. The supper at the destination station was all ready for us to be served our meal. The pie & mash supper was delicious with the added bonus of a sticky toffee pudding following. The cost was £70 per couple and was worth every penny. I would recommend visiting the railway and riding on the railway whether for a specialty night or supporting their everyday rides.

Dear Joan Thank you for taking the time to post a review and photographs of your recent visit to us. This is only the second time we have run a Pie and Mash train and it is great to receive such positive feedback! The staff who are both paid and voluntary work tremendously hard to ensure everything goes smoothly whether on a special train or our standard services. I will ensure your kind words are shared with those involved and the team at the Ratty Arms who made the pies for us. Once again thank you and we hope to see you again soon. Kind regards Stuart @ R&ER

Tremendous day on the railway with a 14 mile return journey taking about 40 minutes each way. We had a look around Ravenglass and the museum. The scenery is spectacular and the train drivers and assistants were all very friendly. However, we did have one problem. We tried to book tickets on line only to be advised that all tickets were sold. We had a plan B which included just visiting Dalegarth and we found on arrival that the trains weren't full after all. The website clearly needs some work, the railway is missing out on selling lots of tickets.

Thank you for taking the time to post the review and photographs of your visit. I am somewhat puzzled by the review as you have rated us as terrible yet still had a tremendous day and acknowledged how friendly our drivers and staff were. Maybe you have hit the wrong dot as terrible does not seem entirely justified. I do appreciate your frustration with trying to book tickets. The Gala weekend you attended appeared under "Book an Event" rather than "Book a Ticket", this has caused some confusion and we will endeavour to speak to our web and ticketing company to ensure this is clear in future. The website should never say "Sold Out" and if it is doing there is a fault there. We have tried and cannot replicate your experience. What it does say is "No tickets available online. Please contact our friendly and helpful team on 01229 717171 to help you with your booking." We can see how confusing this is and we are of course commenting because we are aware of the situation. We will work with our web and ticketing company to try and improve this communication as it needs to be clearer. I would stress that on non event days potential passengers should try to book online as your are more likely to get the experience your require. Despite the booking challenges, I am pleased you had a good day at the Gala and enjoyable time. Thank you for bringing these matters to our attention and we will certainly see how we can improve on them. We hope to see you here at the railway again soon. Kind regards Stuart @ R&ER

Very expensive, 2 adults and 4 children costing £110.In honesty I should have checked pricing before travelling as it was before covid since my last visit.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your visit. Like a lot of heritage railways we are struggling with escalating costs. Since the pandemic our wage bill, coal bill, electricity bill and insurance have all risen in price by eye watering amounts. We have had to raise our fares to cope with this. You visited on our annual gala weekend. This is a special event and we did have different fares in place. Over the weekend visitors were allowed unlimited journeys on the railway, behind the scenes tours were taking place and there was a smaller miniature railway running. Our standard fares are cheaper and a family ticket, 1 child and 1 under 3 would cost £84.50. In addition to this we also have our Local Residents Scheme which is available for visitors in CA and LA postcodes. It is also possible to join the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Preservation Society whose members have the privilege of free travel on the railway. Once again thank you for your review and we hope to see you at the railway again in the future. Kind regards Stuart @ R&ER

We went in the open carriage as it was a warm day. Views marred by perspex which had been put up during covid. Surely these could now be removed.
Otherwise great trip.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your visit. I am pleased you had a great trip. The screens that were put on the coaches in 2020 remain in place for a number of reasons. Feedback from visitors is incredibly polarised with equal numbers for or against the screens remaining in place. Screens have been removed from some vehicles and as things come in for refurbishment and repair we are beginning to remove them. As our joiner did a proper job of fitting them it means we have to do a proper job of reversing them too. In reality they do not detract from the view in the manner people imply. Once again thank you for your review and we hope to see you here at the railway again soon, Kind regards Stuart @ R&ER

We had the railway and afternoon tea in the Dalegarth cafe bought for us as a Christmas present. We didn’t really know what to expect and were pleasantly surprised with this interesting little railway.
Please note it is not a full sized train and carriages so is much smaller than a usual train.
Its small size does not detract from the enjoyment of the journey in the Eskdale valley or the history attached to it.
On arrival at Dalegarth the delicious afternoon tea was served in a specific area in the cafe and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
There’s some lovely walks from Dalegarth so make sure you leave enough time to enjoy the area. We only had time to do the short walk up to the Eskdale water mill which is about 15 minutes away and well worth a visit.
A lovely day out well worth the trip.

Dear Jill Thank you for posting your photographs and review of your visit to us. I am pleased to read that your were pleasantly surprised by your experience. We are a little railway and the trains are approximately 1/3 the size of a big one. The size of the train, as you found makes them much more endearing! It is amazing to think that these little trains moved tons and tons of granite from the Quarry in Eskdale down to the big railway at Ravenglass. Eskdale is a gem of a place and as you rightly say there are some splendid walks to do for people of all abilities. I will ensure your kind words are shared with all the staff, I know they will be appreciated. Once again thank you for taking the time to post your review and we hope to welcome you back to the railway again in the future. Kind regards Stuart @ R&ER
