I booked the Coronation Cream Tea on the Move. A very classical steam train ride, you can even observe how they turn the train around at the station. Also try your hand at the rail switches at the demonstration Signal Box. The ride itself has great scenery and especially exciting when you see a train on the opposite track. Tea was very fulfilling and tasty. However the schedule of the return ride was fixed so there isn't much time to explore around Eskdale. Overall a great experience.

Booked a steam and cream tea experience for my son for Christmas. Booking was easy although didn’t realise there would be more trains available on the day. We booked the 11.25 to Eskdale. You can get to Ravenglass using the Northern line as the mainline train stops directly opposite the heritage railway. It meant I had a day off driving which was great. We got there early but the early train was booked up so used the time to wander around the museum which was really interesting. Cafe was great and staff were really helpful making sure the sandwiches in the cream tea at the other end contained things my son was going to eat. The sun was shining and although the train was pulled by a diesel we set off in our partly open carriage. I would imagine this wouldn’t have been as nice if it had been raining. Countryside was beautiful especially this time of year with all the baby animals in the fields and the rhododendrons in bloom. 25 mins later we arrived in Eskdale, we didn’t realise we needed to go downstairs for our tea so queued with everyone else but staff were quick and efficient and the line went down quickly. Once redirected and sat down Tea and scones were yummy. Never seen clotted cream in a jar before. We wanted to visit the waterfall but although there were two later trains back to Ravenglass, we may have been able to change from the 2.10 but this was the only steam train so we stayed with our original plan as there wasn’t quite enough time to get there and back. Was a great day out, lots to see just a shame the other train broke down.

Thank you for your review of our Cream Tea and Steam Experience. We are sorry that the "Steam" part was lacking on your outward journey. Whilst our fleet of historic locomotives are lovingly cared for by our skilled engineers from time to time their age and complexity catches up with them. Unfortunately a component failed on the locomotive rostered to pull your train as it prepared to come from the engine shed to the station. This meant we had to substitute one of our diesel locomotives at short notice.
Nevertheless the ride is still beautiful and as you found at this time of year is very vibrant with new born lambs, fawns and chicks.
The Cream Tea experiences follow a set pattern of times to fall in with the sitting times at Dalegarth Cafe. The trains allocated are done to ensure you do not have unnecessary time hanging round or waiting on a table at Dalegarth.
Once again thank you for your review, great to hear you had a good time. We will look forward to welcoming you to the railway again in the future and an opportunity to visit the waterfalls,
Kind regards

A unique but relatively expensive round trip. Carriages are cramped and many of the seats are open to the elements. Check weather forecast before you book.
Scenary gets better as you travel up Eskdale as you near the Western Fells.

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to us. It is good to see that you appreciated the scenery on your journey. Our open coaches which provide some of the best views of the scenery are the most popular choice with our visitors. When we say open, we really do mean open! This does mean that you can be quite exposed in them at times.
The design of our coaches date from the 1920s and 1960s, people do fit in them differently these days. Our three "Premier" coaches which visitors can choose to upgrade to offer much more space. They are also prototypes of what future carriages may look like.
We do try to be price aware in terms of pricing. The railway has significant costs to cover it operation. The mains source of income is tickets sold at the ticket office. Please be assured this money is continually reinvested into the railway to ensure it is here for future generations.
Once again thank you for your review and we will look forward to welcoming you back to Ravenglass in the future.
Best regards

We originally bought the standard return tickets; however, it was the hottest day with heatwave and we found our seats without a window. Then I tried to find the staff to pay for the upgrade or change to any other seats. The staff was so nice and helpful. As the departure time was due soon, she went to the platform with us to make sure we could get on the upgraded "Ruth" Carriage. With her help, we could enjoy a wonderful trip with amazing view.

Thank you for taking the time to post the amazing review of your visit. Some of our older enclosed coaches do not have particularly large opening windows which do make them quite stuffy in the summer time. I am pleased to read one our staff members where helpful and were able to upgrade you to one of our "Premier Carriages", saving your visit.
"Ruth" our Directors Saloon is wonderfully spacious and has plenty of opening windows for warm days.
Thank you and we hope to see you at the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway again in the future.

I only went in the Signal Box (which is free, but I would definitely encourage a donation) but was met by Roger who was extremely accommodating. He showed me around and I felt like I got a real feel for the working life of a signal person. He explained the use of the signals and taught me how to use them as well as the safety procedures in place to contact the next stations (Drigg and Eskmeals).
Roger was a real joy and clearly had a passion for what he was sharing. I will definitely be back soon to enjoy the museum as well as a ride on Lal Ratty.
Thank you, Roger :)

What a lovely review of a visit to the Old Mainline Signal Box at Ravenglass. The Signal Box is part of Ravenglass Railway Museum and is open regularly throughout the year. Roger is one of our wonderful volunteers. A great character and a perfect host when you visit his domain!
I will ensure your kind words are shared with Roger, I know he will appreciate them.
Once again thank you and we will look forward to welcoming you back to the railway again in the future.

Whole family spent an excellent day at the Railway. There was plenty to see and do. Staff were all very helpful and friendly and not too officious. We were able to get close to the engine and watch the driver doing all his tasks. There was several engines running so plenty going on.
We had coffee in the cafe at one end of the line and lunch at the other end. Both cafes were clean, efficient again very friendly staff and the food was very good.
The museum was interesting, enough information given without becoming tedious for younger ones.

Thank you for your excellent review. It certainly looks like you family had a great time. Our paid and voluntary staff, in all departments, take a great deal of pride in what they do. It is great to see that you found them to be welcoming and courteous. I will ensure your kind words are shared with them all.
Our standard timetable has two trains in action at any time which tend to help generate a buzz about the place.
Thank you once again for your kind words, we hope to see you and your family here at Ravenglass again in the future.

The Ratty undeniably is one of Cumbria's most loved tourist attractions: a miniature railway entirely staffed by volunteers that goes from the beautiful village of Ravenglass right into the Lake District. I really enjoyed my trip from Ravenglass to Dalegarth, passing places like Eskdale and Scafell, and having a wander around Dalegarh before the train turned round to go back to Ravenglass. Also on a warm day, it was fantastic to sit in an open carriage and get a bit of a sun tan after a long winter, and to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
At Ravenglass I had a visit to the free museum, had lunck in the reasonably priced cafe, and admired the miniature locomotives that are beautifully looked after. The staff in the cafe and on the trains were polite and helpful and clearly loved what they were doing
However, £20 for a 14 mile return trip is very expensive and I did hear a family comment that they were paying £50 to take a return trip and having to pay to use the car park. I know there is the cost of maintaining the Ratty, but this is expensive, considering other miniature and heritage railways charge considerably less. While I enjoyed my trip to the Ratty, it's a shame it's so expensive.

Dear Glenn,
Thank you for taking the time to post of a review of your visit. I am pleased to see that you enjoyed your visit and took the opportunity to use our amenities including our café and museum.
In terms of your statement that £20 is too much, I have to say that from our side of the fence it is only just enough. We are very price conscious and we do understand that our visitors are having to make their pound stretch further but we are in exactly the same boat. We do undertake price monitoring and compare similar attractions. Our return fare is comparable with other heritage railways of similar length and offering to their visitors. Whilst we are a miniature railway we are quite different to those that operate in public parks or other attractions.
The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is a company rather than a charitable trust. We depend on the income from our ticket office to enable the business to function. Any surplus at the end of the year is ploughed back in. We receive very little in the way of subsidies or grants. Our costs have exploded. Our coal bill has increased by 75% in the last 12 months, Insurance has increased by 26% and our Electricity Bills have risen by 100% . We employ up to 40 members of staff, we ensure they are paid properly but please bear in mind that minimum wage / national living wage has increase by 75% since 2011. All this adds pressure before we factor in maintenance of the historic infrastructure, buildings and fleet of locomotives and carriages.
We are doing as much as we can to manage these costs and to ensure that the railway is here for future generations to enjoy.
Thank you for taking the time to post your review and I hope you consider the points that I have noted and will consider visiting us again in the future.
Kind regards
Stuart @ R&ER

This was an absolute gem of a trip. Took us some time to find the station but that was the fault of my sat nav.
Myself, my wife and dog visited in March 2023 and absolutely loved it. Right from the start the staff were very helpful. We arrived a few minutes before the train was due to leave, while one lady was sorting our tickets (including a special ticket and pack of biscuits for our dog), the other one shot out to the platform to make sure they waited for us.
The trip itself takes you through lovely countryside and you can just sit back and relax, taking in the scenery.
On the return journey they even called our name to make sure we were on board and hadn't missed the train.
If you are in the area, take the train - you won't regret it

Thank you for absolutely wonderful review. It is good to see you made it despite the perils of using a Sat Nav in West Cumbria!
We have a passenger list for every train, this means we know who to expect and can provide a warm welcome to our visitors when they first arrive at Ravenglass. More importantly we also know who we need to bring back from Dalegarth, though it has been known for people to go missing when they discover the delights of some of the hostelries in Boot!
Once again thank you for your kind review and we hope to welcome you back to the railway in the future.

It depends on if you like walking.
There is only a shop and cafe at the station, but you can spend a couple of hours walking in the area.

Hello hope everyone has had a nice Christmas 🎅 we have been given a voucher to use on this railway and are wondering about places to stay!! We are thinking of June as that is our wedding anniversary and will probably stay 2or 3 days!! Can anyone recommend a bed and breakfast or a very nice hotel!! Thank you 👍 Dom
Hi, we stayed at Woodend self catering but Paul & Jella do B&B there. I would imagine it would be very good and it's a beautiful peaceful location up on the fell. They are lovely people, so nice we have booked to go back for two weeks next year. It's only a short drive from the railway. We had a very nice lunch with good service at The Pennington in Ravenglass at the other end of the railway which is on the coast. There are other hotels and B&Bs in the area but I would research and book asap as it will get booked up early for June.
Regards,
Paul.

Our journey took about 40 minutes and when we arrived at dale Garth we could have got straight on a train waiting to come back we would have been waiting at the station for about 15 minutes before setting off an example our train left at 13:21 and the train back we could have caught was at 14:25 if you get off and stay at dalegarth for a while there are later trains but adds time on I have a timetable in front of me but can’t take photo to show you

Hi, You failed to mention that the car park is actually £4.00 for the day
Which is actually Very Cheap.
If you are taking a return on the railway you will need at least 2 hours
If you are only using the cafe an hour at £1.00 should do.
I cant comment on your food but can only say that ours was excellent.
