Fantastic trip back in time to aviation’s earliest days, join and go all year, discount too for flying days, if you get a calm day the Edwardian 1910 era aircraft take to the sky

We didn't realise there was so much here - not just planes either, but cars/vans/motorbikes/bicycles, even the odd bus & tractor! Plenty to read too - shame the official guide book is so expensive (£5-6 at National Trust places is bad enough, but we drew the line at £13).

We all thoroughly enjoyed our day at the Shuttleworth Collection and are aleady planning to go back!
All the staff were very friendly and pleasant, especially those in the cafe. We had delicious cake with coffee to start with. For lunch we had scampi and chips with mushy peas and vegetarian curry. All arrived piping hot. The curry was very good and tasty so my husband said. The three of us who had th scampi really enjoyed it... the chips were excellent... nice big chunky ones!
There is a lot to see. The planes are facinating and a few, almost horrifying to think of someone actually going up into the air in one in their hay day... to find so many still fly in displays stunned us! Everything is beautifully displayed and clearly labelled. It's a bonus to be able to be so close to the exhibits to see small details you often miss in larger displays.
There are some wonderful cars too, carriages, bikes and buses.
The maintenance hanger was an eye opener into how the planes were constructed and the huge amount of work needed to maintain and repair them.
We spent over 3 hours wandering around the hangers.
The Swiss Garden was very pleasant to walk around. We couldn't quite see the Swiss connection...but in the sunshine it was lovely to roam around.
We walked up to the front of the main house just to see what it looked like. We passed wallaby, alpaca, llama and ostrich on the way!
It was only £14 each to get in... really good value for money we felt. If you go back within 30 days you get in free!
From our experience we all highly recommend visiting the Shuttleworth Collection you wont be disappointed.

Feels very friendly and refreshed. Hangars appear to have been reorganised and display a fantastic Collection. Both gates now open and people can also now come to the cafe and play area without paying an entrance fee. Need to pay to enter hangars and Swiss gardens but worth it. Children are free. Cafe was very good. Staff very friendly and seems more of a buzz about the place!!

Visited the Shuttleworth collection for the first time yesterday and was really impressed. Firstly let me state some differences from our experience to that of ‘Mr One Post Wonder’ below. Yesterday both vehicle entrances were open and, although you do get directed by the brown tourist signs from the A1 junction to the new entrance on the B658 which takes you through the estate and past the college before arriving at the airfield, the main entrance with car park on Hill Lane was open and several people including several cyclists entered this way just to use the cafe whilst we were sitting there. And yes you certainly could use the cafe without paying the entrance fee yesterday. Maybe it’s different on an event day but as the museum entrance is in the shop beyond the cafe i am not sure how it can be any different on a normal day.
The entrance fee covers the collection and the Swiss Garden and it is true that you cannot visit the Swiss Garden for free nowadays, something apparently that you could do pre Covid pandemic. In this respect the concessions price for over 60’s is £14.00, not £15.90 which is the full price, and for the record children get in free.
The collection itself is housed over six hangers and includes some real rarities. Each hanger is themed and alongside the vintage planes and vehicles there is a wealth of supporting information and details on the exhibits history, plus several other related collections, including several donated model aircraft collections that I found equally as fascinating as the real aircraft ( perhaps that’s a bloke of a certain age thing who grew up with airfix kits). And each hangers walls are covered with period photographs fitting the displays in the hanger.
The Swiss garden, dating back to the 1820’s, is also well worth spending some time in and this time of year the daffodil displays are really impressive.
We utilised the on site cafe twice during our visit and found it fine. Obviously it won’t be winning any Michelin stars, but as a museum cafe it is more than fits the purpose.

Total rip off - we visited today - 4 retired adults we thought a nice meal and coffee 👎 but no We had to travel an extra 3 miles to gain entrance then we were told £15.90 each entrance Sorry we only want the cafe 👎 unfortunately access to the cafe is only available if you buy a ticket for museum at £15.90 concessions - we telephoned before travelling 50 miles nothing was said about cafe is not available unless you buy an entrance ticket - total waste of time - unless you take a fresh look at what’s going on your cafe is finished - sorry but it’s off my radar from know on.

Forced to drive an additional 3 miles to gain access for no reason. 2 entrances we have previously used are closed. Nearly put us off coming ! Luckily our friends said preserve as once you’re in it’s good!

Excellent aviation display which includes the 1909 Bleriot (the world’s oldest plane capable of flight) plus an astonishing array of historic, also some made famous from films and one hangar full of the fast and historic record breaking aircraft such a short the 1934 winner of Uk to Melbourne flight.
Try and get chatting to a volunteer, they are full of wonderful stories.
Tip: book online and your ticket lasts for one month, so you can visit multiple times...we came 3 times in our 2 week stay nearby.

The new entrance fee is extortionate for what you get. You used to be able to go into the cafe and gardens for free, now it’s £19.50 per adult just to get in! Not something you’d do just for a walk and a coffee. As many attractions do, the fee should be split between a cheap grounds only ticket and a separate fee for the hangars, as that doesn’t interest everyone. Not sure id come back, shame as if it was cheaper I’d be more inclined to come more often and inevitably spend money in the cafe/shop.
