We went to the Chewton Glen spa for the tailor made spa day to celebrate 3 birthdays and an impending birth. I was expecting it to be a very relaxing day, however the main pool allows the hotels residents children in and this ruined our relaxing day! Around 3:40pm approx 15 children appeared in the pool, splashing around and screaming! I felt like I was at butlins, not on a spa day at an expensive hotel! The hotel states that children are allowed in the pool between 4pm and 5:30pm, but they arrived at 3:40 and ruined the peace and tranquility around the pool. There should be separate pools for residents children and people on a spa day paying £225. My bespoke facial from Maya was lovely and very relaxing and the food in the spa cafe was very good. The toaster in the spa cafe at breakfast was antiquated and didn’t work, until a member of staff showed us a knack at getting the thing to stay down and toast bread! Just get a new toaster! It was embarrassing! We also had 3 Proseccos and 2 cocktails but had to pay £9 service charge!! Proper rip off.

This is the second time we have visited the Spa for the Tailor Made spa day at Chewton Glen so we like it so much we booked again. After reading other reviews on here I do agree with a lot that's been said. Chewton Glen has such a great reputation but there are definitely pros and cons to the spa days.
The staff are absolutely lovely and so helpful and professional so I cannot fault them on this at all. The atmosphere is very laid back and chilled so that was all good. The breakfast and the lunch at the pool bar was excellent but one thing we wasn't very happy with was we bought drinks which were extra (the food was all included in the price we paid) and we had to pay a 12.5% service charge which we thought was very expensive as we just ordered them at the bar so no extra effort to justify paying this. We did question this with the lady behind that bar and she said yes we had to still pay it as they don't get tips!!!! Also, we had 2 glasses of prosecco which I think were about £9 each and my daughter who is pregnant had a zero alcohol prosecco which was £14 for one glass! We were absolutely stunned by this, a complete rip off and it didn't even have any alcohol in it!!!! We only realized this when we came to pay the bill as we didn't see it on the drinks menu.
We all booked treatments and all of us loved our treatments very much. The therapists were so lovely and the whole experience was really lovely. My niece did have one negative thing to say though. She was having the Wellness detox treatment which when you read the description, it says that the therapist will guide you though a breathing and sound journey followed by a body scrub and warm body oil. I asked her afterwards what happened during the breathing and sound journey and she said it didn't happen there was just soft music playing which is what the rest of us had during our treatment so maybe this was just missed out? We wasn't sure but just wanted to bring it up that maybe they need to change their description in the brochure.
One other thing we wasn't aware of and this was actually what did spoil our day, was that we did not know that children were allowed in the main pool. We finished breakfast at about 10.30am and went straight down to the pool and there were a few young children in there but they weren't in there for long and they then got out with their parents so that was fine. My treatment was at 3.15pm and I felt amazing afterwards. I was so relaxed ( I had the detox focus and it was really lovely). As I left the treatment room, I headed back to the main pool area to meet my family and as soon as I got close to the door back in all I could hear was screaming kids!!! it was so loud and when I opened the door it was the most horrendous shrill screaming and I was instantly not relaxed!!!! there were kids everywhere in the pool, all screaming and shouting and the echo was horrendous! My family were sitting round the pool waiting for me to have my treatment and they had put it up with it for about an hour and could not relax or hear themselves think at all! It was shocking to be honest. After having a lovely relaxing massage and to then have to go back to this, I found it really not on. If you go through to the hydro pool area then no children are allowed in there but we were not aware that kids can use the pool in the day especially when you've paid £900 for 4 people to have a spa day!!!!! To escape the noise we went through to the hydro pools which we was the only way to escape the noise. We really wanted to just relax on the loungers round the pool to finish off our day but was unable to this so it was such a shame. Based on this, we have sadly decided that we won't go back as they clearly allow children to use the pool area where people have paid a lot of money for a chilled relaxing spa day. When we had our first visit we didn't experience this as our treatments were later in the day and after they were done we left to go home. Had we known this we would have gone to a different spa as we all wanted some peace and quiet. Maybe they should consider having a children's pool in a different area!?
It was a real shame as we were celebrating 3 birthdays and my daughter is pregnant and we don't see each other that often so we wanted time to relax in a nice tranquil place.
It's sad to say that we will not be returning for the tailor made spa day at the Chewton Glen again, because it cost us a lot of money and we can only afford to do this very occasionally and we do feel it was spoilt at the end of the day.
I also don't agree with the service charge for drinks and the cost of zero alcohol drinks is shocking!
The area definitely is in need of tidying up in areas like others have mentioned. Some of the hydro pools weren't working and the steam room wasn't working in the changing rooms. It just needs some TLC to bring it up to the standard you expect for the price they charge you.

I had a lovely pedicure today from Lucy. First attempt by another colleague of Lucy’s didn’t work out so well but the management asked Lucy to step in and sort things out. She did an excellent job of it so I left very happy. Only taking one star off because of the redo.

Just had a day spa, very disappointed with cleanliness in hydropool, towels and robes worn out and grey in colour instead of white. Sunbeds by pool had cushions which were stained, wet and seen better days. Overall style over substance!

We love CG spa. It’s the perfect place to celebrate my daughter’s birthday, we have spent many years celebrating different occasions with our family at the Chewton Glen
We particularly enjoy the beautiful outdoor jacuzzi, the hydrotherapy pool is one of the best in the area and the treatments are out of this world.
We booked for 2 x Weekend Tailor-Made Spa Day (With 120-minute treatment) this includes a gift to take home although this year, first time ever, we were very disappointed with the gift.
Treatments were tailored to you and the beauty therapists took their time, you didn't feel rushed. We also had as always an amazing lunch, the food was 5*!!
All in all a perfect day.
Thanks to the team.

Chewton Glen was beautiful, scenic and relaxing
Main pool was very clean and well maintained.
This bit is a little constructive criticism/feedback…the hydro pool area and jacuzzi could do with a bit of TLC, as there were missing tiles and at time you can feel crumbly bits when in the water! And some of the equipment were also not working including the foot spa area in the ladies changing area which was a real shame!
This section is the cons of our spa day experience!
As a 5*star hotel, It’s expected to have a certain type of clientele. There was an older lady by the pool side, that made us feel uncomfortable would not stop staring at us, I wasn’t the only one who noticed it.
The way she kept looking at us, it was obvious what she was thinking as we are a different ethnicity to her!
And lastly, we were aware the pool will be closed at 9pm we left earlier to get changed anyway, but didn’t realise it meant we had to also be out of the changing rooms too.
One of the staff members was clearly keen to get home, she made us aware of their closing time, but her tone of voice seemed off, when we were seconds away from leaving! There was a couple of other women in there too but I didn’t hear her say anything to them 🤔
Overal, my spa day experience was great, minus the couple of points I mentioned, undecided whether I’d return again or not…time will tell.

I chose chewton glen for my big birthday based on its 5* reputation.
Firstly I cannot fault the staff.
Everyone we came across throughout our day was charming and professional.
From our lovely treatments to the delicious buffet lunch all was fabulous.
However the spa experience itself couldn't have been more different.
I was looking forward to relaxing around the pool reading... Which is surely not too much to ask for on a spa day.
However this was not possible, in either the pool or hydrotherapy area. This is because we were unable to get a lounger around the pool throughout our entire day.
Some loungers had even been reserved by people leaving their belongings on them for the day.
We were not alone with this as other spa guests were wandering around looking, or waiting for a lounger to become available.
There is not even a relaxation room to escape to.
In the hydrotherapy pool, some parts of it were not working. There were chipped and missing tiles.
Plaster has fallen off the loungers and pillars had paint peeling off.
All was the same as it had been on my first visit 20 years ago, but has sadly not been maintained.
The pool area has had a freshen up, but other than that everything has fallen into disrepair.
Even the changing rooms have not been updated and the curtains in the changing cubicles are hanging off the antiquated rail.
I paid the same price as other nearby top end spa's which I am familiar with having visited senspa & limewood previously.
I expected much better from chewton Glen.

I’d have reviewed lower had I paid full price for the room. Even so sadly this hotel is not in the same league as hotels it is up against. If you have stayed at Limewood, Fourseasons, Dormy House, Calcot Spa, Thyme etc etc. and think Chewton will be comparable sadly it isn’t.
All staff utterly charming, room we had Jnr Suite; clean and big, but felt a little old school. Wi-Fi in the hotel not up to scratch, needed a Wi-Fi dongle given to us in the room and in the lounge. Lunch at the Kitchen was the best part. Spa sadly tired; plaster/paint coming off pillars and beds in the hydrotherapy pool room. Hot tub outside luke warm at best, steam room out of service. Service at the bar pretty much non existent, wife given champagne in a wine glass as all flutes used. The amount of used glasses on the side was unreal. Dinner in the main restaurant, surprised to say the least salads on the spa menu and the bar menu was on the menu. Asked for food order 3 times before offered an aperitif or wine list. Eventually ordered drinks, and my glass of sparkling alcohol free wine I had to chase twice. While the staff were charming it was by no means as it should be. Food was good, not spectacular same as the menu. Breakfast however was fantastic and the setting was lovely. We decided not to use the spa so went for a walk to the beach, lovely walk. When leaving staff forgot my jackets with out bags, as my wife left things in the room (luckily found) this was less of an issue. Staff were very ontop of this to be fair. It was my 40th celebration and the only mention of this was at check in, the following evening we had dinner with the kids in Côte and they were more attentive with service and the fact it was my birthday the day before.
Beautiful hotel and setting, let down but my not being current / slightly tired to its competition and could have done better.
Sent a review, and offered a call which I replied probably not needed but some times. No call or email to say couldn’t happen.
Stay was still lovely, and certainly not a disaster, however I had expected it to be much better.

Wow..what a lovely spa day. We had a brilliant day at chewton glen spa. From the moment we arrived to the cocktail at the bar to end our day we as perfect. Breakfast and lunch were delicious.
I had a wonderful 90 minutes with Penny. Penny made me feel comfortable and relaxed. The shoulder and back massage were outstanding. After the facial and lemon sorbet I left feeling relaxed and stress free.
I can not sit to return, Many thanks

I have just returned from another spa day at Chewton Glen, it was my daughters birthday and as we have done for many years we spent the day together having a wonderful time at the Chewton Glen Spa.
Over the years I have reviewed the Spa which is without a doubt simply the best and we always have an amazing experience.
Our Spa day includes breakfast and lunch which is exquisite, the selection is fabulous too much to choose from you really are spoiled for choice. A special mention for Ben who always provides the very best service one could hope for.
We had two 1 hour treatments, my therapist was Claire, the treatments were out of this world, Claire has the ability to make you totally relaxed so that you fully enjoy the experience, so relaxing.
A good therapist will tailor your treatment to your needs as Claire did.
I alway appreciate an experienced therapist who can deliver great treatments.
Another memorable day, thank you to all the team for your kindness and professionalism.
A special mention for Katie Brame Spa Manager who ensured that we left with our Chewton Glen Experience intact and looking forward to our next visit and also becoming a returning Spa member.
A huge thank you to all the team- who were just amazing!

Why are some reviews not available to see? Looking for an overall unbiased opinion not just glowing reviews
เขียนเมื่อ 15 พฤศจิกายน 2016
Rarely do I comment on hotels that are as they should be (many other reviewers will send 'fabulous' reports). I am only interested to comment on properties that do not match the glowing descriptions they themselves put out :)
