Blimey. I wanted to see this on the strength of other reviews.
I’m having sought out the grotto, our first challenge was parking - this is outside the town and the roads adjacent are narrow, blocked with cars and therefore tricky to park.
The grotto itself was a tenner for a family of 4, which I thought was ok until we went in.
It’s a short tunnel with the same shell pattern throughout. We spent 5 mins walking down the tunnel and then 5 mins back. It was boring, dingy and there was nothing of interest in terms of how it was made.
Not for us!

Such a unique and fascinating building. It's quite small so we weren't in there for long but it's still a must to visit whilst in Margate as it is a masterpiece in itself.

Very unusual place, the shells are unfortunately blackened, but you can still see the mosaics and it is an incredible work.

Very unusual and amazing that it has been there for so long, personally I was a bit disappointed that most of the shells were black, although I appreciate it is a difficult decision wether to conserve it as it is or restore it to how it was when created. We did not spend too long here, perhaps about 30 minutes but good to fill a gap. Gift shop had a nice range of unusual items

If you're in Margate then you have to visit the shell grotto! Completely not what I expected at all but I'm glad I went. Plus you are supporting part of our historic heritage.

A truly amazing place which kept the kids quiet for an hour or so.
I have been here since I was a child nearly 40 years ago but it hasn't changed a bit. Still completely fascinating and it is great how it has been preserved for all that time.
The gift shop is also great along with very friendly staff.
We booked the first slot of the day and although there was a few people coming and going, it didn't seem packed or too crowded.
I am really glad to see this place is still going and actively looking at restoring sections of the grotto.

This is a little gem to visit whilst in Margate
Go spend some time looking at this marval of mankinds creative thoughts
you will be at a loss looking and also learning the history of the place
try and be there early or late when will be less people as you will feel the wonder of the place

Truly unique experience at shell grotto today. We took our two small children to see the grotto and they loved it. There was colouring to keep it interactive and the gift shop blew their tiny minds.
Our daughter was so excited to buy some shells with her pocket money and the ladies in the shop were so friendly.
My husband who loves history found this place so fascinating. It really was a marvel to behold. So much history and skill rolled in to one. We will definitely return.

Hello. I am disabled and have trouble walking. However, I managed quite easily. Take your time. It is not a "huge" venue and I think you could manage reasonably well. There are no exceptional "ups and downs". It is well worth the visit. I suggest you try it. If I can manage - most will! Enjoy your visit. Peter
