Disappointing

We stayed in a cottage at the rear of the pub. Cygnet cottage. Sadly it is not up to standard. The shower room was very very dirty with black mould and the skirting boards black with dirt and dust. The cooking equipment was not clean I had to scrub the saucepans before I could use them.
The approach was a very untidy 'yard' so the view from the window was depressing.
The owners were a lovely couple and the pub itself was friendly..and very near to lots of places to visit.
I would not stay again.

Found by chance driving along A1, lovely Sunday roast with friendly staff and tasty food at a good price, nice to find a good one by chance and only 2 minutes from main road

A lovely local pub with great food.
We are a family of four with a dog and stopped in for Sunday Lunch. We were lucky and got a table even though we hadn’t booked.

We all had the lamb roast dinner and it was delicious. There was plenty of food and huge Yorkshire Puddings for a great price £14.50.

The staff were all really friendly and the service was excellent. Would highly recommend to anyone passing by.

Lovely warm welcome

We walked from the local campsite with 3 nippers on their scooters and our dog. We were welcomed in along with the scooters and sat for a drink. Very cheap prices for drinks and whilst the boss made free food for everyone, he went out of his way to make sausage, chips and peas for the three little ones. What a lovely thing to do. We had 3 drinks, watched the rugby and walked back along the road. What a lovely couple of hours. Oh, and the open fire on a windy night was fantastic too. Well done to the staff and owners. We hope to be back soon.

Food was excellent and staff were very efficient but the pub was in poor condition - they had kids running about (one in particular screaming) and people allowing dogs to eat from the table - did not feel particularly welcome so would not recommend for couples - the other pub in the town was much preferred by us

Great short break with hosts Richard and Jane.
Fantastic location staying at the Black Swan cottages in the heart of the village.
5* service from all the pub staff and the cottage accommodation.
Highly recommended

rubbish !

Called ahead of our visit to ask if they would be open and serving food on the date and time I gave and was told absolutely.
I explained we had a birthday celebration in our party and was told yes we will be open and yes we will be serving food.
Upon arrival I was told they were not serving food!
The lone barman could not be more disinterested if he tried, maybe if he had some help he would have been a bit more helpful.
I went back outside to inform our party to stay put while I checked the blackboard menu out front....and yes they were serving food that day, so why on earth we were told they had no food on is beyond me.
We would have stayed for a few drinks but as the only member of staff was quite brusque and curt we decided to look elsewhere and found a lovely place down the road :)
My advice is keep driving, there are other much more welcoming places in the area to eat and drink.

Fabulous time spent at The Black Swan over the last week. Very comfortable, friendly and welcoming. Food was gorgeous, drinks were just as good and the company was even better. Will definitely return for more giggles.. ha. Would highly recommend. Thank you for having us.

Excellent stay

So grateful to the Black Swan for accommodating us at the last minute with our two dogs due to an error on my part. We had arrived at our holiday cottage in a nearby village a day early with 2 dogs and needed to find accommodation that accepted dogs for a night. We found the Black Sean and would definitely visit again! Lovely room and dog blankets, bed, and biscuits were available too! We had a lovely full English breakfast where our dogs were also welcomed. The hosts were so friendly and we’ll definitely be recommending to our friends and on social media! Can’t thank them enough!

Appalling Service and Attitude from Barman

Essentially, if I were the owner of this otherwise pleasant little traditional pub, I would sack the barman. He kept us waiting, while he changed a keg for 10 minutes. We were a party of 4, myself, my wife, my son 21 and his friend 20 years of age. I ordered drinks and we were told very curtly that we would be 'thrown out of the pub' if either of the young men drank beer bought by me because they appeared to be under 25. My son is clearly older than 18, I was buying and I am 66 years old. Never have I been spoken to in such an abrasive way by a barman.

My son is actually a bar manager himself!!! He has never been asked for ID. ( actually he found his ID after we had left in disgust but would not return ).

The barman was rude and abrasive.

Because of this we left and went to another pub, where we were met with a warm, friendly welcome. On the two occasions I have visited The Black Swan it has been really disappointing.

No food is available and this has been the case since late in 2021.

Avoid.⁹
