Wychwood brewery for years was a great asset to the community of Witney. The tap was great with "fresh" beers (as well as unique specialty one off brews such as "ruby after midnight") being served and always extremely busy when it was open. Tours were a great tourist attraction and of course the shop, somewhere to pick up some beers for after.
That's all gone now and let's be honest, it's all about the carlsberg part takeover of Marston's.
During lockdown the tap was of course closed. Yet there were times when they could have opened. During initial lockdowns they did open and with social distancing measures in place, the tap was as busy as ever.
After carlsberg put their foot in the door, a company bear in mind that is all about profits (they'd shut down any asset to the local community to maximise profits and even convert it entirely to brewery focused, even brewing many other brands of beer in a brewery to maximise output), things changed.
The thing that gets me is there was never any honesty about things. They could have reopened the tap at many points after carlsberg entered the partnership, it would have been thriving as always, but they didn't.
Throughout the local community was just kept in the cold and to be fair, when people are kept out in the cold like that for so long, it's obvious what the whole agenda is. The tap never reopened and the shop closed for good soon after.
I have no doubt that from day one of carlsberg having their foot in the door, they decided no tap, no on site shop and that was that. They weren't interested in seeing whether it was viable post COVID. It was either something that didn't line their pockets enough as it was or something that could be put to better use (i.e instead of the tap and shop being there, converting them to expanded brewing space to make even more beer, even from other non wychwood brands).
Things couldn't be more blatant. Myself and many others just knew it at the time but they've treated everyone like they are stupid by staying silent and then coming out with lies of how it's COVID to blame and so on. We all knew this was all about carlsberg and lining pockets, it was profitable all right, but just not profitable enough for them.
Now in the wetherspoons real ale festival notes, it shows a wychwood ale as being brewed at the eagle brewery site in Bedford. Strange eh? Sure eagle brewery is the site name of the actual wychwood brewery in Witney, but... To actually brew a Wychwood beer, away from wychwood brewery? That's a first.
Mark my words time is up for wychwood brewery Witney thanks entirely to carlsberg (a bit ironic isn't it? Wychwood ales thrived on the "what's the matter lager boy, afraid you might taste something?" Slogan, only to be effectively stubbed out by...well....a predominantly lager brand. That slogan was aimed at people who drink beers such as carlsberg).
It's very sad times for wychwood brewery but just remember this before you buy another one of their beers.
I can sadly say the brewery site will either be no more in years to come or will just be a brewery brewing many other (including lager) brands of beer.
The goblin would be raging.

Looked forward to this visit for a long time. We knew the tour of the brewery might not be on but was told the shop would be open. Sadly it was not.

Walked into the Brewery shop and although we didn't expect the tours to be open we were very disappointed that the girl serving in the shop would not let us into the museum which is as I understand it just as small as the shop she was to busy packing deliveries to be even bothered to serve us I thought she needed to find her manners after all if they can't do tours and are losing revenue then I think a little bit of customer service would have gone a long way

We’re really sorry to hear that you weren’t greeted with a warm welcome on your recent visit – we’ll be sure to address this. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions we aren’t able to show customers around the building at this time (we don’t have a museum but prior to restrictions would happily show non-touring visitors the tap bar etc).

The opening times of the brewery was a little bit of a hit and a miss. As we was just visiting for the day and had looked up the information on their website before hand only to find that they've changed the opening times to much later. We really wasn't going to stick around for a couple of hours to wait for it to open. So we was a little bit disappointed. Plus the shop is only permitting one person at a time and we had planned to purchase lots of crates for friends and family to take home which realistically would take two people so we didn't both going into the shop either.

We found this place on Google maps and thought it seemed like a good place to stop, we weren't disappointed!
You have the options to have a brewery tour, sit outside in the sun and enjoy one of the drinks brewed on site or just pop in the shop for some drinks to take home.
We opted to just go to the shop as we were restricted by time but WOW what a choice! But never fear the staff are very knowledgeable and can advise you on all that they sell.

Met friends their for drinks at the weekend and sat outside in the sun! Staff friendly and prices cheap! The beer and cider were lovely and refreshing!
Lots of sanitiser and distance between tables.

What an enjoyable experience we had visiting this fantastic brewery. Wonderful to hear all about its history and facts about the brewing process from our knowledgeable and friendly tour guide Chris.
We also very much enjoyed the beer tasting session at the end.
Well worth a visit!

Having bought vouchers for a present for the tour quite a while ago, we finally made the journey from down south yesterday. And what a great time we had. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Lesley was our tour guide and she was brilliant - with her overview of the history, interesting stories and her knowledge of the brewing process. Loved her little theories on everything!! The tour was the perfect combination of finding out about Wychwood and sampling quite a variety of their current beers. It even kicked off with half a pint of a beer of your choice - you can’t really go wrong after a start like that.
There’s a small and friendly tap bar on site that anyone can visit and the tour ended in there with a free pint in your very own souvenir glass. We even went back to the tap bar later in the evening after we’d had dinner in the town.
There’s lots of quirky merchandise on sale in the shop as well as their full range of beers - obviously! We went home with quite a selection of goodies. On our way home now looking forward to tucking into the growler full of Hobgoblin! Thank you Lesley - we had a great time!

An excellent tour led by our fantastic guide Douglas. We started in the bar with a choice of beer or a soft drink, while Douglas gave a very informative talk about the history of the brewery.
We then moved on to a tour of the brewery itself, where the various parts of the brewing process were clearly explained. The tour then ended up back in the bar to taste six of the different beers made there.
Finally, we could visit their small shop to collect a free souvenir pint glass ( which is very nice!), and if wanted, buy any of the beers made there. We were also offered the chance to take our glasses into the main bar to have them filled up, if we wanted!
Overall we had a very enjoyable time and would highly recommend a visit.

I see from the website that the shop and tours are currently closed. Does that mean the brewery tap is closed as well?
