It’s an average museum and quite shabby outside. Not really worth taking the time out to visit. There is parking around.

We were visiting the area and were looking for something to do. The museum is well laid out and gives a good overview of the history of Kingston in interesting bite sized chunks.

Have lived near Kingston for 40 years and have only just got round to visiting the museum! Well worth the couple of hours spent there. Very small but well laid out and iinformative. Some of the dim lighting and small print are challenging for aged eyes but the varied content and displays kept our interest throughout. Not enough time to visit the art gallery and hope to return.

Outstanding displays,best 2 hours in a local museum.If you are in kingston visit this museum,you will not be disapointed.

The museum is only small, but very sweet and well thought out. My kids go to King Athelstan school, so loved the fact he was one of the main features. It’s not a place with spend hours, but it is worth a visit.

It comprises a museum at the front and a library at the back both housed in a building dating from 1904 as the gift to Kingston of the American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The museum is free to the public and comprised three sections, Ancient Origins charting Kingston’s past from prehistory to Anglo-Saxon times when three Kings were crowned here; Town of Kings celebrating its development as a market town from medieval times to the 1940s; finally an art gallery, part of which on the ground floor has a permanent exhibition dedicated to Victorian pioneering photographer Edweaed Muybridge, a changing exhibition of paintings by contemporary artists of scenes in the borough; a room upstairs today bizarrely almost completely empty. I was particularly impressed by some stained glass windows formerly in the Town Hall.

🎨 “My Muybridge”, Kingston Art 2018
He was a photographer and an earlier pioneer of ‘motion pictures’.
1. The art show is an exploration of the art form of moving images – images suggesting motion and becoming motion in our eyes.
2. A poll is going on to the left hand side of the entrance. You can choose one favourite work.

Sean Harris’ (2017) “Miss Jones’ Incredible Shrinking Hyaena” (right)
Firstly this truly is a work of moving images – you can flip through the pictures to see a hyaena running across a graph of 800000 years of earth’s temperature change.
And it’s hard not to see it as a bull running across the stock market index.
Either way, the title makes sense.

In dem kleinen, aber sehr gut bestückten Museum kann man die Geschichte Kingston seit der Steinzeit miterleben. Wer sich für Ethnologie und Archeologie interessiert ist hier genau richtig. Es fängt an mit Faustkeilen, gefunden in Kingston, geht über Funde aus der Bronzezeit, den Römern, den Saxonkings, dann folgen spannende Exponate aus dem 17ten bis ins 20te Jahrhundert mit interessanten Informationen über die Stadt - beispielsweise gab es hier 2 Gefängnisse, die Polizei hatte bunte Knüppel, die hiesige Grammar School ist bald 500 Jahre alt, und der Verkaufsschlager damals war das Kingston-Krokodil...Anbei ist eine weitere kleine Ausstellung zu den ersten bewegten Bildern (der frühe Film) von Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), ebenfalls sehr sehenswert.
Besonders gut gefallen hat mir die liebevolle Präsentation, so sind beispielsweise die Schaukästen Modelle von Häusern aus Kingston. Insgesamt fand ich den Besuch im Kingston Museum als sehr informativ. Im Museumsshop finden sich hochwertige Mitbringsel, und der Eintritt ins Museum ist kostenlos. Ich kann das Museum nur weiterempfehlen!
Besonders gut gefallen hat mir die liebevolle Präsentation, so sind beispielsweise die Schaukästen Modelle von Häusern aus Kingston. Insgesamt fand ich den Besuch im Kingston Museum als sehr informativ. Im Museumsshop finden sich hochwertige Mitbringsel, und der Eintritt ins Museum ist kostenlos. This free museum is located at the edge of Kingston Town centre and covers the history of Kingston. This includes the coronation of several Saxon Kings, thr HMV dog who was from Kingston and an exhibit on Edward Muybridge.

Housed in an interesting old building, this museum offers an excellently presented insight into the history of Kingston-upon-Thames, with activities for children (with rewards for completing them) and a small but well-appointed gift shop. Free entry a bonus.
