The Hidotu would connect with the nearby Tank Traps from World War 2 with a bit of maintenance on the overgrown track. The track firect from the hIghway to the Hideout is a pleasant small walk on a well marked track, but you;d need a machete if you walk on to the Tank Traps from there.

This is a really easy little gem to bypass but well worth the stop. The kids (and adults) loved thinking about how and why Captain Thunderbolt would have used these granite boulders as a safe haven. They're so interesting to walk through. The walk to the hideout is short but interesting. Only about 15 minutes and really easy with kids. Would definitely recommend getting out of the car to have a look.

Finally got here! Been waiting years! When you get to the sign.. take the track to the left.. it was over grown.. and wet.. don't take good shoes..
Up at the boulders.. you can see where the horses were kept.. but you gotta go around a bit further to the left.. and you will see the overhang hideout..

Wow! Unbelievable that he actually took his horses around the area, so interesting to walk around the rocks and boulders and the board at the front was very informative.

We stopped here late in the afternoon, so was a little cool. The children raced ahead and loved exploring the hideout in the rock formation. They used their imagination to think where the bushranger would've slept out of the rain, where the fire would go, and where the horses could live.
Once this was explored, there is a path leading out the back of the hideout, up into the granite boulders. Here the kids could clamber around, climbing ever higher, until we all had amazing views of the area. There is plenty to explore amongst all the boulders.

Something to stop & visit the locations that this infamous outlaw hid out as he moved about the country. This spot is barely off the beaten track, a crawl in space with a hole in the ceiling for his fire smoke to exit, space for about 8 people to sit inside, no doubt it was better then being out in the wet & cold.

Huge boulders and a path leading to the hideout. Just to see the landscape without the hideout and story is worthwhile paying this place a visit. We enjoyed this very much.

Image a time when there were no cars. People rode horseback, or in carriages, and the roads were not safe.
Highwaymen stopped travellers and relieved them of their goods and wealth, before disappearing into the bush, where they could hide in caves and unknown places, impossible to find.
This is one of those places, and when you go here, you will see why he was able to avoid being found. Find this cave and then climb up the hill behind it, through the exit at the back of the cave, for some magnificent views.

We loved this spot. A little walk in from the road you’ll find the most fabulous hiding spot of Captain Thunderbolt.
You can walk through the rock openings and really imagine Thunderbolt hiding out here.
Bookending this with our trip to Uralla completes the tale.
Well worth a stop and a stroll.

Whilst visiting the numerous National Parks in the area, this quick stop is well worth the effort to stop at. This is an opportunity to educate the young ones of recent Australian history and our bushranging infamy. Climb in amongst the rocks and set your imagination loose of times-gone-by. A short well-maintained path will get you to the hideout.
