You can either go up & down on the chairlift for $19 or one way for $12. We decided to walk up which was steep. At the top, there is a path on which you can walk around checking out all the beautiful views from every angle. We came down on the chairlift which was short but fun. Cafe and toilets located at the bottom and ample car parking. Drove a few hours to get here and it was well worth it!

I climbed The Nut at Stanley today & the incline going up & down is VERY steep & please only do this walk if you are fit & healthy. If you are then it is a challenging & invigorating climb up & walk around the top. The view at the top is panoramic & absolutely beautiful. It was very windy today but so worthwhile doing this. Take The Nut challenge!

We visited early in the morning, theoretically timed with the opening of the cable car, but it was inert so we opted to climb the Nut. Halfway up the very very steep concrete pathway ascent, I turned to see the cable car in motion. Nothing for it but to toil to the top. Once you reach the summit there is a mostly flat route around the top of the Nut, which has noticeboards and vantage points - fantastic views and all the usual flora and fauna. Well worth it. We descended the way we came up when arguably the ‘bannisters’ are needed even more - to stop a hurtling headlong to the bottom. There is a nice cafe and gift shop at the bottom. Car parking early in the day was easy but suspect this gets congested. The Nut dominates Stanley - really unique.

The walk up was steep as the chair life was closed, but the ciews were well worth it. We did the while walk once we got to the top and highly recommend you take the time to do it.

The Nut is an imposing geological feature and is believed to be the remains of an ancient volcanic plug. It is surrounded by very steep cliff faces, is largely flat on top (although the path around the top has a steep incline in one section and many stairs), has several different vegetations, is home to a number of different birds as well as pademelons and offers fantastic 360 degree views.
We visited in winter and the chairlift was not operating. The signage at the car park stated that the Zig Zag Track to the top was 430 metres long and would take 15 minutes each way. The bitumen surfaced track climbs to the top of the over 140 metre height of the Nut.
The first two legs were the steepest and we took it steadily, stopping a couple of times to get our energy back, admire the view (over Godfreys Beach) and take some photos. We weren't trying to rush and completed the climb in the allotted 15 minutes.
At the top of the Zig Zag path there are two options to circumnavigate the approximately two kilometre path around the top of the Nut a) go clockwise in which case the first lookout you will strike is Rocky Cape Lookout with views out to Bass Strait or b) anticlockwise in which case the first lookout you will reach is Highfields Lookout which is approximately 250 metres from the top chairlift station. The walk to the Highfield Lookout is reasonably flat along a good path and there are only a few stairs to get down from the path onto the rock platform lookout. There you will gain great views over the Stanley township.
It is only a short flat walk along the good path to the next lookout which is Tatlows Beach Lookout.
It is after Tatlows Beach Lookout that the path may become physically challenging as you walk down a quite steep incline to a heavily forested picnic area where we spotted several pademelons before you climb approximately 101 steps to the next lookout which is Fisherman's Wharf Lookout. I thought that this lookout afforded the best views over Stanley port and the coastline to Boat Harbour and beyond.
You then climbed up a further 93 stairs before following an undulating path to reach the last lookout, Rocky Cape Lookout, where you could view the power of the sea in Bass Strait as the waves pounded the cliffs. You had to step over some rocks to reach this lookout.
The path back to the top of the Zig Zag track was through grassland with the path being only gently undulating.
If you had chosen to initially go clockwise around the path you would have had a fairly easy walk to Rocky Cape Lookout, then been walking down the stairs to reach Fisherman's Wharf Lookout and climbing up the steep incline to get to Tatlows Beach Lookout.
We completed the walk around the top in about 45 minutes including stops at each of the Lookouts.
The path back down the Zig Zag path also needed to be carefully navigated.
Well worth the effort.

I spent a few hours in Stanly and spent this time hiking up to the nut and doing the full circuit of this reserve. The climb up is a bit steep, but once at the top you get amazing views in every direction. There were also lots of pademelons when I visited and even some baby pademelons. The reserve was very well maintained and was overall a really great place to visit for a couple of hours.

Rode the chairlift up and completed the walk. Fantastic views. Great easy walk. Worth completing. Nice gift shop and cafe at the bottom.

The walk around the top of the Nut offered spectacular views and the unexpected experience of walking through a quite serene forest, at one point. We had expected tracks surrounded by grass and rocks and yes, there was a fair bit of that. There were Shearwater nests, which are holes they burrow into the ground, usually amongst the grasses. Also known as Mutton Birds, a name early English sailors gave them for obvious reasons and locally as Yolanda or Moonbirds, they migrate here for the summer, from great distances - try Siberia - and live for prodigious lengths of time, well into their thirties.
We wondered about snakes and wore our gaters in cases but were told there were none. Defies reason when you imagine Shearwater’s eggs so available.
Lots of fabulous lookouts and only one decent rise in the track, it was a really pleasant walk.

The literature and notices are not lying when they state that the climb up is “short but steep”. If still not convinced when climbing up, try coming back down at normal pace. Once on top, if you still have energy, go clockwise to maintain a far more gentle but general upward circuit. If not so energetic, then a counterclockwise circuit would be more suitable. Whichever way you go, you get some superb views of Stanley Township, its little fishing jetty and the sea in Bass Strait relentless pursuit to remove a stubborn rock out of its way. Even better when the seas are in a temper.

Short and very steep walk, but well worth the pain for the stunning 360 degree views across Stanley and the bay. The circuit walk at the summit is also enjoyable

Do they have little doggy sitters at many N.Parks...makes it hard to do nature walks if not..

Wasn't made aware of any dog sitters and since there are bird breeding areas around the nut, unlikely they would even encourage them. Most National parks in Australia are very negative to domesticated animals as they do pose various risks.

Hi, may I know if I can only reach the Chairlift ride at 4 pm, would it be too rush for me to finish the ride and stroll at the summit as they close between 4.30 to 530 pm? I will be travelling in December.

Hi Gummycat. The chairlift was not operational when I was there. Bring water and plenty of rest stops as you walk up.

The walk takes about 10-15 mins to top of the nut depending on how many stops required to take a breath or take great photos and of course much quicker to come back down. Once at the top it is just a leisurely walk around the nut to observe the views, wildlife etc. This could be done in an hour or longer. It reallay does depend on fitness and long you want to study things. It is well worth the effort. Hope this helps.

No dogs aren't allowed. It's a "sensitive" bird breeding area, as well as lots of other native wildlife.
