my wife was really interested in going to see the National Weather Service museum in Norman and I, having lived in Stillwater back in the early 90s, was interested in seeing stuff about tornadoes. The museum seems more like an unorganized jumble of older equipment than what most of us would consider an actual museum. It appears to be a work-in-progress, driven by the passion of a few individuals who used to work at the National Weather Service back in the day. You will see lots of old equipment that has long been superseded by the digital complexity that currently forecasts the weather. It is amazing that these individuals were able to get as much information as they could with nothing but diodes and transistors. Off in one corner there is a highly damaged car from a tornado back in the day, and there is a T-38 airplane that is heavily reinforced that used to be flown right into the Tornadoes for data collection. It is an educational museum and the staffer there is perfectly willing to embellish and add to any of the exhibits you are looking at. I thought the price was a little stiff for what you saw but it is a specialized museum and I imagine they’re probably not getting a lot of government funding. Not recommended

Fascinating and little known museum that is very worth a visit. I was initially drawn to visiting by the presence of the T-28 weather research aircraft. Was pleasantly surprised to find two there...one has been converted into a hands on flight simulator. Run by a volunteer staff...so check the hours. They also have small but interesting gift shop. Prefect for kids, students and adults. Very interactive.

a display of the machines from Twister, the cafe is name the Flying Cow, very knowledgeable docent who graduated from there, seeing all the equipment, amazing that only 5 people monitor for severe weather in the whole USA, another room of people who write the forecasts for the US - used by TV stations and private weather companies (weather.com, accuweather, etc.). well worth the time, but call ahead because it is by reservation only and they do I think two tours a day, maybe more. we called the day before, got an email and registered for the next day. so not so hard to get in but plan ahead.

I took my Grandson as he loves weather. Went in and felt is this it. We had to wait for the non paid volunteer to finish his talk with some adults. Then he came over and basically stated i will show you this part and your are on your own after this. I felt i was in a 3 car garage with other peoples old items. Now there were a couple of displays that were fun for a 4 year old. but that was it. We were both disappointed.

Had a great time here. Our student tour guide’s nose piercings were a little distracting, but what I was able to absorb between the distractions of her specially placed jewelry, she did a very good job. I would really recommend taking their tour if your in the area.

We navigated this small museum with our own personal tour guide. We got to do lots of fun things like practice Morse code and broadcast the weather on tv. This museum is fun for anyone regardless of your level of knowledge of meteorology.

This museum isn’t what I imagined; it’s a small space inside of a larger building and it can be difficult to find. Nevertheless, I thought it was fantastic but I do think you really need to be interested in weather and technology to enjoy this place. It’s not a cool museum with tornado simulators or anything like that, it’s small with old equipment and artefacts. When I arrived some people were just leaving so, Chris, the member of staff working there gave me a tour of the museum which you really need in order to understand everything. Chris talked me though how the old equipment worked and the ways in which it’s been modified for better results; these included old map machines, data collection equipment and radar machines. Chris actually used to work at the National Weather Centre so he was an actual meteorologist which made the tour even better! There’s also a damaged car in the museum from the last powerful tornado to hit the area in 2013. And of course any visit to a weather museum must include a green screen which allowed for a great photo opportunity and it is was free! The museum was a lot of fun! For me, it was better than going to Disneyland!

First visit with kids from 18 months to 13 yrs old. Gentleman at front desk was very pleasant and patient. Gave us a tour and really grasped the kids attention. He took his time and was very well informed of the many objects. They have a small kids area to play in which all the kids enjoyed. Very small and only need 2 hours max. Had the stroller and walked through okay with plenty of space. No changing table in the restroom but was able to use the seating area in one of the showers to lay the baby on.
Definitely enjoyed our visit but was a lot smaller and had expected to at least see a walk in tornado wind simulator.

Very nice, new museum with interesting equipment and exhibits. The guide really went out of his way to show us the history of weather tracking.
Great old and new instruments and info on severe weather. Not a large place but worth and hour visit for us!

Being a commercial airline pilot for over 30 years, and an amateur radio operator for 41 years, I found the different displays interesting on many different levels.
There are old hybrid radar consoles that contain integrated circuits, but yet they are wired point to point with miles of wire between the ICs.
How about a 1958 klystron vacuum tube that would have a 1 megawatt output on today's cellular bands? "Can you hear me now?" :-)
It would be wonderful if the museum could raise enough funds to restore the T 28 aircraft to flying status again.
It was an enjoyable excursion.
