My wife and I went on a Friday night to see our friend, Gabby Holt, perform in the ballroom. This was our first time at this venue, so we didn't really know what to expect. I did check out their website before going to see location, menu, etc. The photos on the website made the joint look nicer than it actually is. The cocktails were decent and over priced. Now, the description of the menu items sounded promising but simply did not deliver. We ordered The Secret Grilled Cheese, which is not a sandwich. Grilled polenta which tasted a little over charred in spots, topped with melted cheese and arugula and roasted tomato. Sounds good, right? It was not. It was so very bland and disappointing. And over priced. The mushrooms baked in parchment were just plain icky. Plain and simple, the food sucked and we ended up going outside to look for somewhere we could eat before our friend's set began. So, by all means, go to The Secret Society for the cool bar experience. Go to The Secret Society for live music. But don't go there hungry. Eat first.

One of our favorite places to go for local live music. They have different styles throughout the week but we particularly like the music they play from the 20's and 30's. The local bands are fantastic, creative, and fun. We particularly like the Libertine Belles, Newport Nightingales, and Eukaladies. But many other good ones beyond these. The dance floor is a reasonable size and the band is on a stage. There tend to be a number of regular dancers that attend when we do. Entry fee is very reasonable. We usually go for happy hour so drinks are reasonable too. Seating is limited but if you get there early you can usually get a seat. Great place.

This is one of those reviews I'm hesitant to write because I want this to remain a secret. If you are looking for a fun night of dancing and socializing, this is the place for you! Get dance lessons, listen to live music and meet new friends all for the price of $10. It's the best deal in town. Be aware, as the night goes on, it gets crowded. So, if you are serious about taking the dance lesson, arrive early!

Still a unique place where you can meet with a new significant other, enjoy up tempo live music, and dance. The youngest attendee I have seen was a babe in arms. The oldest, over eighty. Usual patrons range in age from early twenty's on up. The younger set does Lindy hop, Balboa, Jive, Charleston, while the two step and foxtrot fit in and whatever is fun fits in for everyone else. The main lounge offers an absolutely unique selection of six choices of Absinthe, served in a traditional style, plus many cocktail choices that are based on that, plus cocktail mixes only found here. Also featured are drink specials.
It's a wonderful place where you can bring your family, don't have to get a baby sitter because you can bring the little ones along and not break your bank account. Come early, things start at six on Thursday through Saturday and seating is a premium.

Enjoyed after dinner drinks at secret society recently. Lots of unique cocktails and comfort food. We'd already eaten, but menu looked so yummy we shared a grilled tun sandwich, which hit the spot. Vibe is casual, cozy, unique. Service quite attentive. Would definitely go back.

Great drinks and really nice atmosphere. Can go before dinner at Toro Bravo, but also can just hang there for a long time.

It is upstairs in a complex of fine other food and entertainment options (Wonder Ballroom, Bunk Sandwiches and Toro Bravo Tapas), the Secret Society is like a speakeasy, old school bar, dance hall and rock club- all at the same time. Usually hosting some of the wildest swing dancing in Portland, they also book all sort of other music.
Great sight lines as the stage and club area is perfect sized. good sound system and simple lights (no blinding strobes). I've seen 15 piece jazz bands and 3 piece pop bands and enjoyed them all.
i won't even try my chances on the dance floor when it's jazz- just not my league...

Couples, singles, parents, single parents, from 2 to 90 this is a place where you can enjoy up tempo live music from the 20's to modern times, jazz, jug bands,country and western, depending on the band for the night. "Happy hour" is from 6 to 8 where children are common and welcome. This unique feature makes an evening possible for many of us with financial challenges, to get out and socialize. The cover charge has ranged from $5 to $10 for a show that starts at six and ends at 8 or 8:30. There are two shows, one starts after the other, separate covers. Arriving early is a good idea because seating is limited. Food is available at a fairly reasonable price point both in the dance haul or in the adjacent lounge and cafe. Many young people attend in period 1920's dress and enjoy using their Lindy hop, Charleston dance steps. Older people come and enjoy the music, dancing, often just reminiscing. The Secret Society is a true family "secret" entertainment gem with something for all ages.
