What is Gallery Oldham?
Gallery Oldham is an art gallery that is located in the heart of Oldham. It holds a variety of exhibitions and galleries that look at art in different ways including portraits,sculptures, posters and historical items.
It currently holds the following Exhibitions and Galleries which are:
Gallery 1 - Oldham Stories
Gallery 2 - Finding the Funny: Sam Fitton
Gallery 3 – Tony Husband
Gallery 4 – Robert Lees: Oldham in the Countryside
Exhibitions Visited
Oldham Stories
This was a great Exhibition that showcased interesting items giving a historical insight from the past to the present. This includes a vast array of objects from various collections at the Gallery. This included the National History, Social History and Art collections.
Some of the items that were on display included The Rothwell Car, Jewellery, and specimens of a taxidermy. These items were interesting to look at with a great story behind each object.
The Natural History Collection was beautiful. It was lovely to see a large range of habitats that can be found in Oldham. This included owls, foxes, badgers, birds and swans.
Finding the Funny: Sam Fitton
Sam Fitton started his career in the textile mills before becoming a skilled illustrator, poet, dialect, writer and performer.
This Exhibition was engaging as you saw Sam’s various works from cartoons that he drew in the newspaper The Cotton New Times.
It also brought nostalgia in the adverts that he did for famous brands including Macintosh Toffees and other products. It also gives an outlook on how he used different dialects in his writing. His art work is also thought provoking in highlighting the issues of mill workers.
This Exhibition was brilliant showing how Sam used different art means in order to earn a living. Inspiring.
The interactive element of this Exhibition which is the badge making for a mill worker was fun, educational and made you think out of the box.

Gallery Oldham has a café however it is currently temporarily closed. However there are a few cafes nearby that you can go to after your visit.
There are toilets on the premises.

A great exhibition and the member of staff in the gallery, Danielle, was extremely helpful she talked to us about the social unrest of the time and how people fought for freedom and basic rights. She was very passionate about Peterloo and the impact of it on us today. Great artwork and photography. She even came downstairs to show us the new graphic novel written for the 200 year anniversary. Thanks for all the help.

I visited the Gallery, Library and Learning Centre and was impressed by it all. The lighting is perfect for shows, and the area is covenient to the Car Park also the Tram links. There are cafes nearby within walking distance. Oldham is hilly, if you are walking a lot or have a disability. Local Nigerian born artist Titus Agbara who has appeared on Sky Arts painting competition shows is one of those whose work has been shown in the Gallery. i enjoyed the peaceful contemplative atmosphere.

Exhibition about Peterloo and Oldham is worth seeing. It has good context on the conditions of workers after Waterloo. Gallery is let down by the cafe. We were refused entry at 3:50pm on a Friday afternoon on the grounds they were closed. Advertised times are 4:00 or 4:30 depending on which notices you read (need to get their act together). Mind you, previous reviewer refers to it as a greasy spoon and their food sounded inedible so perhaps we had a lucky escape!

Gallery Oldham has some really interesting changing exhibitions as well as the permanent collection detailing Oldham's past and present. Of particular importance is the large photograph of the town, taken in the 1800s when the town began to emerge as an industrial centre for spinning.
The gallery is located in the Library building and has some excellent views across to the surrounding hills. Here there is also a performance space and a small shop.
There is also the Naked Bean Cafe, where drinks and food can be purchased.

An art gallery, performance space, excellent cafe and library all in one. We poppoed in for coffee, stayed to listen to a talk on local legend, Annie Kenny, saw two exhibitions and had a second coffee... friendly helpful staff, lots going on - wish this facility was available more locally!

The best library complex I have ever visited. A good cafe. Multiple events, we went to a talk about Annie Kenny, the local working class suffragette. Thoroughly recommended.

Gallery Oldham is in the centre of town, only a stone's throw from central tram stop.
There is so much to see and learn about whether it's Natural History, Social History or Fine Arts and Ceramics.
The galleries are above the library and Lifelong Learning Centre, where there isore to see and learn.
Friendly staff and a cafe make it a full day out.

Gallery Oldham is based in the library building. There are four galleries a cafe and toilets. It features social and natural history themes.
You could bring children from 5 upwards. Teens will enjoy this too. Some lads were playing on the space invaders for at least an hour and went back again when no one else was playing it.
We stayed a morning but could have stayed longer. The staff were invisible during the time we where there but guess they are busy doing other things.
