We got a map from the tourist office and walked to the track from there. We enjoyed our walk around the lake and it really felt like we were out in the desert. A must do in Cobar.

I was very surprised to see so much water in the reservoir, since I was over 800km from the NSW coast. Well worth a visit.

This place was a free campground in the past and it is now forbidden to overnight in it. Given how far is everything in this part of the world, it is very unwelcoming that they fine you for overnighting here. Instead, there is a free campground that is a ridiculous triangle between three roads and underneath street lights and electricity cables that is the worse free campground I have even been to. Then, I wanted to pay and go to the private caravan park in town but the reception was closed already (at 6:30pm). Then I read that they have forbidden camping here for pressures from the owners of the private campgrounds... Yes, the ones that were closed at 6:30.
So basically, I arrive in town thinking I will be able to overnight in a beautiful reserve and I end up sleeping near a trashy highway with the sound of trucks passing by or resting with their air-cons on.
My experience in Cobar: pass by to see the mine lookout, have a beer in the pub (they are very friendly) and run! So ridiculous, because I will never recommend anyone to overnight here, so they are losing visitors in the long term.
So basically, I arrive in town thinking I will be able to overnight in a beautiful reserve and I end up sleeping near a trashy highway with the sound of trucks passing by or resting with their air-cons on.

Stopped there a few years ago at the free camp. This time only stopped for a coffee break. Sad to
see people coming with their big dogs and leaving their dropping on the grass. Not taking the time to pick up their messes.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this wonderful place and wish I had been able to spend more time there. Very pleasant near the water and plenty of walking tracks to explore.

Make sure you call into the Cobar Visitor's Centre in town, The lady was very friendly and helpful and suggested we grab lunch from town and take it to The Newey and eat down there. She said if we were lucky we might see some turtles on the waters edge. So I was loving this idea already. We grabbed lunch in town and then drove a short drive from town.
The spot was perfect nice shady trees and a quiet spot to have some lunch while watching the water. As we were having lunch we started to see some turtles pop their heads up. If you don't move around alot you can see them clearly as they make their way around the reeds in the water. And a bit of patience helps. This was a highlight of Cobar as it was not what I was expecting. It is free to enter the reserve and take your camera with you.

This is a relaxing spot with some nice green grass at the waters edge some birds on the water and in the trees, plus picnic tables and shade. Good place to take a break from driving.

In such a dry climate this oasis with great bird life is a treat. We took the 6km loop walk which goes through a lot of native vegetation and local sights with good interpretive panels.

We visited Newry Reserve during the afternoon. Easy walking track, we pushed a pram and our toddler rode his bike. Plenty of grassy spots to pick for a picnic. Great spot to stop with young children or anyone looking for calm time out.

This was part of the Federation walk suggested by Stella at the Visitor centre. The bird life was wonderful and all the lovely vegetation. We cycled and finished off at Cobra hot bake for coffee and a donut breakfast sitting in the sun.
