Great to see the aboriginal art - shame about it having to be caged off but I suppose that's par for the course. Good drive out, rood partly dirt but well graded . Emus and kangaroos by the roadside early morning. Amazing vast landscapes. Good circular hiking route. Not sure they really needed the bright orange markers which are rather too intrusive but at least you don't get lost.

No dogs allowed here. The carpark has a circular driveway around the little park that you'd get a caravan around but I think the last 300m of unsealed rocky road would only be ok for off-road vans. The turnoff from the Barrier Hwy is just on 38kms from Cobar, then it's another 33kms to the car park. All up, 71kms from Cobar. 142 fairly boring kms for a round trip (which is what I did). The road is all sealed now to the gate then a very rocky unsealed road for about 300m. It's new so still in good condition but after all the recent rain you can see some places already deteriorating. Once off the Barrier Hwy be careful of emus and feral goats. The emus will run in front of you before running off. Once you've parked your car (where there's a couple of drop toilets) it's an approx 300m walk up a further rocky unsealed road and then 300m up the hill scrambling across rock formations (although there's a rough rock-paved path most of the way). I've had knee replacements but walked it slowly and very carefully and was able to do it with my hiking boots with ankle support and good tread. I had to watch every foot placement though. Definitely not a walk for sandals or thongs. Once at the little rock overhangs the art is behind steel mesh fences with some ports for cameras. The art was nice but not spectacular. One of two signs suggested they were used to teach hunting etc to youngsters. So they were only intended to be utilitarian rather than decorative. Sort of like a TAFE skills course whiteboard rather than something painted for an art gallery. There was a lack of descriptive signage, like how old etc they are believed to be. I'd recommend it but would warn not to expect too much.

It was a bit of a drive out there (30 something k's) and all but the last km sealed. Good aboriginal markings and nice area with picnic facilities.

The road out was sealed and scenic.
The artwork was a mix of styles and easy to see although we weren't certain if it was all old and original or had been 'refreshed'.
The parking area is a pleasant spot for lunch if the weather is good and the loos well maintained.
Although we could see no mention of it the short flagged walking path to the sites is really well made and contains excellent examples of fossilised ripple marks.

Just letting everyone know that the road into the aboriginal rock carvings is now fully sealed. And the rock art is well worth the visit!

The newly tarmacked road to Mt Grenfell will surely increase tourism. The old 33kms of dirt was a disincentive. Now, the peace of the picnic area, the ease of the walk to the three famous art sites make the drive well worthwhile. Sadly, the art must be protected with wire mesh, but flip=open windows make study quite easy. If only a Ngyampaa representative was on hand to illuminate meaning.
The circular walk to see the Country from Mt Grenfell's peak is well-marked but fairly broken.

Turn off the highway and drive about 30kms on a dirt road to the car park where there is a toilet and picnic tables. The art trail leaves from nearby and we also did the 1 hour loop. There is supposed to be a longer track too but we couldn’t find it. The walkabout trail was well marked.
The rock art is amazing. You need to focus on it to see the emus, kangaroos and hunters. Simply stunning and a testament to the 60,000 years of Aboriginal custody of this country.
The road is rough but we did in a rental Qashqai. Note you may not have insurance on unsealed roads so take it slow.

We visited this amazing place,the art work was so clear. We decided to walk the 5k trail
And was in ore of the beauty that was around us.on our way back we sat and had a picnic in the car park lots. Off shade and tables

Quite little oasis along a creek, short walk to the three sites. I did it easily in my Teva sandals. Park at the day camp site and walk approx a km to the start of the short paved section of a much longer trail.

What are the unsealed road conditions and how long is the drive from the highway?

There is 30 kms of dirt road from the highway and it’s a bit rough on the last few kilometres at the Mt Grenfell end. Best if you have a 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle, but might be manageable with careful driving in an ordinary vehicle - note we last drove this road a few weeks ago.
