How did I end up in a back street in Cobar? The church is huge... my photos do not do it justice! However perhaps that's simply the perception because of the red brick colour against the sun drenched buildings around it. You will see it because it stands out.
The other interesting thing when I arrived at this church was that it was open... I just walked in. No-one was there so I could look around to my heart's content.
But where did it all start? Who is Laurence?
Lorcán Ua Tuathail, known in English as Laurence O'Toole and in French as Laurent d'Eu (1128 – 14 November 1180), was Archbishop of Dublin at the time of the Norman invasion of Ireland. Lorcán played a prominent role in the Irish Church Reform Movement of the 12th century and mediated between the parties during and after the invasion. He was canonised in 1225 by Pope Honorius III.
Seems he was pretty important so it makes sense to have large church in the Outback named after him.
The Foundation Stone of The Church of St Laurence O'Toole was laid by the Most Rev J Dunne DD Bp of Wilcannia - 15th October A.D. 1905.
