The first copper mines founded in Cobar in 1870 were later merged to create the Great Cobar Copper Mine. It’s in the centre of town and the welcome sign is built on its slag heap.
You can’t see much of the mine these days but the administration building that was constructed in 1912 is still here, on the side of the main road and that building is now the Heritage Centre. This was built in the boom years of the mine.
These days as a visitor you can explore the building and the yard displays ... they will show you the aboriginal heritage, pastoral, mining and social heritage.
My favourite bit of the museum was the 'Far West Children's Health Scheme Baby Health Centre' rail carriage. I thought I had been in every type of train that Australia has to offer but this one made me smile. They converted the carriage to ensure that the needs of the locals were being met and they thought outside the box for it. The carriage was clearly converted for this to happen because the railways didn't make carriages for hospitals at the time.
There is a story wall that tells you about what it meant to the locals to have the sisters visit them in the carriage. Clearly this predated the Royal Flying Doctors and the idea was ingenious.
I can no longer recall the cost at the door... I think it was about $10. It's a pleasant place to visit with a lot of reading material so ensure you have time to read it if you are visiting.

A nice museum with lots of information on the earlier mining days. There are two floors to this museum, a courtyard and then you can walk around to the old ming pit. We loved the bottom floor, the museum looked like it is a work in progress and it seemed like the main work had gone into the bottom floor and the top floor looked like it still needed a bit of work. The courtyard had lots of old mining equipment and the mining pit is full of water but I found this quite interesting. The prices for entry are very good and there is a small gift shop in the main room.

This brings Cobar together. Visit the memorial park across the road, go down to the COBAR a sign for the mandatory photo. There is an amazing railway carriage which celebrates the Greta work done by the Royal Far West Homes in early child care.

Interesting place to visit the staff were very helpful lots to look at there is a lot of history on the area . Close easy walk from our camp spot in town

This is a relatively small centre with some good local souvenirs. There is an associated museum that is worth a visit too.
The young lady in attendance was very helpful in regards to where to eat. Another customer was in urgent need of accommodation for the night and she did an amazing job of calling local establishments to find a room.
