Well worth a couple of hours

This is a lovely place to visit. When I arrived I was directed to the shearing display. The shearer was a genuine, retired shearer. He took us through the whole process in some detail. It was truly fascinating and much more than just watching a bloke give a sheep a haircut. He did explain that they get paid $4 per sheep and good shearers can do over 200 each day. Nevertheless, as he explained the overheads I felt tempted to drop $0.50 into his hat. 😉

After the demo which included throwing the fleece onto the classing table I went back to the museum. While it is very well curated and excellently presented there is only so much you can say about shearing.

I proceeded to the shop. I was hoping to buy a polo shirt but I draw the line at >$50. I looked at Ugg boots but $200 brought me up short. Along with most others, I kept my powder dry in the shop.

I had a good time and I am glad I stopped in Hay to come here.

This was big and impressive from outside and interesting inside but not special and frankly too expensive for what was delivered.It did cover the history of wool and sheep in the region.

Experience a sheep shearing

A great experience and lots of information about our shearing history in Australia, with lots to look at plus a live sheep shearing. The gift shop has a lot of stock and the cafe has a great range to choose from at reasonable prices. Plenty of parking as well

Visited here after multiple recommendations but found it rather dispiriting. I appreciate that it’s a part of history and worth having stories recorded - but maybe having something to show how standards of animal welfare have changed would be good

Maybe we were a bit museumed-out by the time we got here, this is an excellent collection and beautifully presented, very comprehensive. The shearing shed wasn't working the day we visited, I think it is probably worth pre-planning in order to see thge shed working.

We enjoyed this exhibition, staff were very helpful. Parking with a caravan was easy. Buildings ‘ design factor was impressive and significant.

A really interesting place to visit about a vocation that very few Australians would have a deep understanding about. The staff were amazing and patiently answered all of our questions. The shearing demonstration was well worth staying for - even if you’ve seen this before.
