Remember Paoli! Following the Battle of Brandwyine, Washington and the Continental Army retrenched by moving north toward Malvern/Paoli and up toward Chester Springs. Anthony Wayne's troops were camped on this field when the British launched a surprise attack that achieved great success. The interpretive signs help bring to life the chaos and terror that the attack must have caused. Worth a visit.

It is basically an open "battlefield" where American patriots were massacred during the American Revolutionary War; there are also grave sites. Plaques have been placed remembering soldiers who have fought and died in America's other wars including WW 1 and WW II; the 3 American flags placed at the plaques make them official memorial sites.

The Paoli battlefield is such a special place and a very important part of the revolutionary war! it’s right in my own backyard and I enjoy walking there every day. The trails are beautiful, the monuments well-maintained and the description of the things that took place there on boards throughout the grounds make it a fun historic education adventure!

There are pros and cons to the Paoli Battlefield. First, some of the plaques were hard to read because they were faded. Second, I think there should be more to a place where American soldiers were brutally slaughtered by British soldiers during the American Revolution. This is hollowed ground and I think there could be more to offer. There's a little trail, but I think this pace is more fitting for those who live in the neighboring developments than a visitor from the outside area.

Upon arrival the battlefield is right there. The mass grave with the 2nd oldest Revolutionary War monument is well kept. The grounds and park were clean and the grass cut. It’s a very serene view looking west toward the far side of the battlefield.

it was a guided tour of Chester Co Historic Walks and the info we recvd was good and it made the whole scene come alive as we heard of how the battle went so long ago and it can make a person proud of their country to know what and how people went thru to make sure freedom is served

If you're going to commemorate a place where lots of people were basically slaughtered, there should be a more fitting memorial. This is nothing but a big field.

I walk in the battlefield often and feel so lucky that it has been so beautifully preserved. The Paoli Battlefield Commission is doing so much that is right. There is amble signage explaining various aspects of the batte, wonderful trails and a sincere effort to keep this treasure in amazing condition. In addition, there are numerous events which occur on the battlefield as well as frequent lectures on the Revolutionary War sponsored by the commission. What a community treasure!

We were on the way to Malvern Retreat House and saw the sign for Paoli Battlefield.
On this large empty area one of the sadness battles of the Revolutionary War took place.
September 20, 1777, at Paoli, Pennsylvania, General Charles Grey and nearly 5,000 British soldiers launch a surprise attack on a small regiment of Patriot troops commanded by General Anthony Wayne in what becomes known as the Paoli Massacre. Not wanting to lose the element of surprise, Grey ordered his troops to empty their muskets and to use only bayonets or swords to attack the sleeping Americans under the cover of darkness. A total of 272 men were killed, wounded or missing from Wayne's division after the battle, 53 Americans are buried here.
When you walk out on to this large stark field just imagine the terror that these soldiers felt being attacked in the darkness.
