Lovely aviary. Enjoyed walking through the exhibits repeatedly which allows you to see them feeding the birds which brings them closer to you. Did the extra exhibit with the owl which was cool. The cafeteria area was very nice with additional areas to sit and eat. The only problem I had was that I missed an exibit with the birds flying because the owl person didn't know we were also doing that exhibit and we didn't know we had to mention it. Not a big deal but something to keep in mind. They kindly gave us a refund. The employees are very friendly and helpful.

This was my second time to the National Aviary as an adult and I could easily return many times. I love birds, and seeing them so close was fantastic.
It was a thrill to see the two immature Andean Condors and their parents. When we saw them in Argentina, they were just little dots in the sky. The Stellar Sea Eagle's size was very impressive, and the lady giving the presentation was informative and engaging.
Loved watching the African Penguins jumping into the water; it was great having both the terrestrial and underwater views for some cool videos.
While the main focus, of course, is the birdlife, I was excited to watch the Two-toed Sloth climbing down from the top of the tree to munch on some greens that were hung for it to eat.
Boat-billed Herons and Roseate Spoonbills, with their somewhat comical faces, were a special treat. I had a funny interaction with a Blue-billed Curassow that walked right up to me while I was kneeling on the sidewalk. I took a closeup photo of its face and showed it to the bird who immediately pecked my iPhone out of my hand and put one foot on top of it! When I'd try to pick up my phone, it would try to peck on my hand but, luckily, it eventually lost interest and I got my phone back. So funny!
The most incredible bird there was the Great Argus. He was practicing his displays and we were told that the female wasn't very interested in him. So he took a liking to me as I sat on the sidewalk; he walked all around me, continually flashing his huge wings with three-dimensional patterns that totally blew me away! I got really great videos of him; wish I could post one.
I always end a visit to any attraction in the gift shop and this one was well stocked with bird-themed educational items, super cute stuffed animals, lovely jewelry, stickers, and fair-sourced handcrafted ornaments.
If you are in Pittsburgh, you can't leave before you visit the National Aviary. If you live in Pittsburgh and haven't been there yet, shame on you (wink, smile)! It's truly a national treasure.

This place was so wonderful to visit. Right from when we arrived Kelsey was very welcoming and knowledgeable with sharing info with us. We booked the Jr.Penguin encounter with the volunteer Melissa. This was fantastic and only $33 each. My son loved dressing up as a penguin and then meeting ‘sunshine’ the penguin in real life.

Wonderful experience for kids and adults too. Not huge but you get really close and personal with the birds even with just the basic experience. Also a very cool sloth.

Visit the National Aviary to see birds of all kinds! Enter the building and take a stroll into the Condor Court, an outdoor area beginning from within the aviary. Get up close and personal with a few different birds!
Penguin Point is a favorite area to all. Penguins! Walking, swimming…see it all. Crawl through the tunnel and pop your head up in the middle to have a penguin possibly stand right next to you. You can also crawl under and watch them swim just as well as seeing them from the front part of the aquarium. Venture outside and you can see the penguins above the surface.
Wetlands is an amazing area because this is where the flamingos are housed. There are some other unique birds in this area but the flamingos really take the spotlight. Immersive, and the rain even started while we were in this area. No worries, the rain is only over the birds and we are kept nice and dry.
The tropical rainforest is really cool. You enter through bamboo curtains and are among an immersive bird sanctuary. You will see birds in nests, a waterfall with birds swimming about and talking to you from above. Don’t forget to glance around and try to spot the sloth that is usually sitting in a corner somewhere. You won’t see him move very fast from where he is, it might even take him all day to get to another point. Enter canaries call from the tropical rainforest and loop around back in as you glance at many other species of birds, including burrowing, owls. They are tiny, sweet little owls.
There are some other areas as well, but the ones listed are my absolute favorites and are the largest rooms out of all of them. There are educational things you can do along the way, and they have specific times that are listed that these things will be happening.
Be sure on the way out to stop by the gift shop. Many cute products, unique art, including canvases done by penguins, and the sloth.
Notes:
Wheelchair accessible entrance
Wheelchair accessible parking lot
Good for kids
Available for kids birthday parties
Gift shop
Restaurant and seating
Virtual reality ride
Pay Parking lot on the premises
A great time and something to see!

We had a great time at the aviary….all of the staff were very friendly and helpful especially at pointing out various birds our kids were trying to find. The bird feedings were long enough to be informative, but not too long to lose our kids’ attentions. We fed the lorikeets and also did a penguin encounter and they were both great. The bird sighting are great, but truly the staff are what make this a 5 star site!

We had a great time and we spent longer here then we thought we would. Also we did buy the tickets for the "Habitat Heroes" program which was disappointing to us, they walked or had the birds out and past us for such a short time, we barely got to see them.

We did the adult day camp experience. It was pricey, but it was worth it. I also like supporting conservation efforts. This was a fantastic place to visit! We were able to see the “kitchen” for the birds, the breeding area (including a Guam Kingfisher chick, whose breed is nearly extinct in the wild), got to see all of the exhibits of course, but best of all was seeing the “Sky Deck” and having the birds fly over our heads. Very educational. We also enjoyed the show in the auditorium which was a video portion mixed in with bird demonstrations in which they flew over your heads. We were able to feed the the colorful lorikeets, who landed on your arms and hands. They provided lunch, a craft activity and packed every minute with something. General visitors are able to walk into their habitats in most places and get up close to the birds. Some wander on the walkway too! There is a sloth, and various other programs to check out like feeding the penguins, a sloth encounter, etc. See what suits you, it was worth the money if you love birds. A neat virtual flight experience (Birdly) is in the lobby, where you can fly like a bird where you lay down on a special table that has flaps for wings. Hard to describe…you have to see it.

Wow! What an interestingand enjoyable place. Has been years since last there. Parking is $5 but being a Sunday we could park on the street for free. Staff most courteous and helpful. Signage was particularly helpful especially with colorful pictures of the various birds. The sloth was quite active (for a sloth) and provided much enjoyment. It was great watching younger visitors react to the sight and sounds of birds as they flew around exhibits especially the tropical rainforest. Several species were easily approached and that made for great picture taking.
We could have spent more time particularly in the tropical rain forest and wetlands exhibits as a different species always popped up just when we thought we had seen them all. Brought back memories of trips to Costa Rica, East Africa and elsewhere as we spotted numerous ones we saw there.
Great place!

I don't remember it being very hot in the building. Good to note - If you have a membership to other attractions like botanical gardens or zoos, you might be able to get a portion or all of your ticket price covered -- we did!
Thanks for your review! I've been to the aviary maybe 5-6yrs ago and enjoyed it. And I'm sure they've improved since then. So my question is about the Sloth encounter. I love sloths but don't really have an extra $150. You really think it was worth it. I'm sure you can't hold the sloth, just pet it? About how long is the encounter? I'll have my elderly, wheelchair bound mom with me, I know she'd like the sloth, just not sure about an extra $150. We're going up for a reunion in a few months, so we're trying to plan out itinerary. Did you do any other special encounters there, like feeding bats or penguins? Thanks so much for your thoughts.

We had the owl encounter at my son's wedding. The trainer brought the owl from table to table during dinner. I did not see anyone touch it, just the trainer holding the owl and photos taken with it.
