The Heritage Rail Trail Park of York County has many entry points along its length from York to the state line. Quite appropriately, I stopped at the parking and picnic area right in the center of Railroad, Pennsylvania. Historical homes and commercial buildings surrounded the site, and a well paved and maintained path accompanied the rail tracks all along the way. Runners, walkers, and bicyclists were enjoying today's brisk weather. It takes a minute to realize that the map of the trail is turned horizontal when, in fact, it runs north and south.

Had an excellent, but brief hike. Wonderful to see a bald eagle and a belted kingfisher. Nice people crossing our path.

This is a GREAT trail and it has it all!! It is flat. It is peaceful and there is a lot of history to take in. Starting at the Mason-Dixon Line and going thru the towns of New Freedom, Railroad, Glen Rock, Hanover Junction and many more you get a taste of the history of the area while enjoying a nice casual, relaxing ride or walk with lots of places to stop, take pictures, get refreshments , learn some history of the area and just enjoy the great outdoors. There are lots of parking lots along the trail so that you don't have to do it all in one day. Just find a lot to start with and one to end with and make the next section something to look forward too.

I have lost track of the number of times my husband and I have biked this trail over the past two years. We will pick a parking area in the middle and ride either South through New Freedom to the MD line (New Freedom is the highest point on the trail) or North to York. Lots of benches and picnic tables along the way. Our favorite place to lunch is in the County Park next to the Brillhart Station parking lot. There is an active railroad track along the trail as the Northern Central Railroad is active as an excursion. Pretty cool if you can time being at Hanover Junction when the steam train comes in. The oldest continuous use railroad tunnel in the US is at about the 15 mile marker. There is a small antique store along the trail in Seven Valleys. If you ride to New Freedom there is a small museum that gives a nice history of the area. My husband and I have an affection for steam railroads so this trail suits us to a tee.

Nice SHADED ride and pretty flat. It was a little muddy in 1 spot but a nice ride. We rode to the end and walked around Market Street. It was nice to see an air station too and I noticed the trail was clean. Easy parking too.

We love the trail. It runs between York, PA and Cockeysville, MD. It's beautiful. Be sure to bring water. Parts of the trail are deceptively strenuous for biking - not steep but looong hills esp. as you approach New Freedom PA from either direction.

Two friends and I rode from Fairview rd parking lot to the closed bridge crossing about a mile past Martic Forge. This section is very flat to the point we couldn't determine an up or down going or coming. The trail is a full road width and covered with very fine crush-n-run with a very smooth surface. Arrow straight and completely tree lined on each side which don't allow for any scenic views. A high power electric line accompanies you the entire length. I recommend this trail for soaking up the miles but not very interesting.

Great trail -- changes name at the state line and continues to almost Baltimore. We parked at the county park at the new northern end (bathrooms!) but would have gone to the Route 30 trailhead if we had known about it. Had intended to park in downtown York but there's really no place for those who want to be out all day.
27 miles to the state line, 27 miles back.
One suggestion: signage in all the town directing users to food and ice cream. Missing a chance to support local businesses!

Flat trail that starts out with a long stretch of unshaded, gravel path along a quiet river. Pavement starts after about 10 minutes of walking from the York trailhead parking lot (1170 Loucks Mill Rd). Hardly any shade until a bridge about 20 minutes in, followed by a slight uphill grade before the trail flattens again amidst lots of trees. Very peaceful/pretty.

Adults in our group enjoyed hiking and rock climbing. Parents with small children did hiking with one year old walking part of the time and riding in child backpack the rest of the time. Nice clean and clear trail.

Well, it can take a few hours to bike the entire thing since it goes into Maryland. There are plenty of station stops to choose from and make your ride as long or short as you'd like.

Is any of the trail paved and good for the thin tires of road bikes?

The trail is a railbed so it is gravel. They did lay down pea gravel so it is relatively smooth, but not blacktopped.
I have seen road bikes on the trail but I have never ridden one there.
