We were fortunate to arrive when a docent was hosting this historic church (started in 1712). The church is lovely, airy and attractive. We enjoyed our respite and the conversation with the hostess. Her presentation was sincere but she didn't have extensive knowledge of the church. It was lovely to look out the colonial windows at the graveyard among the trees and know that those who worship here are one with nature and the those who have gone before.

What a lovely slice of history. The church structure is beautiful and walking through the graveyard is so humbling. Many graves from the 1800’s and reading the stones, you realize how short most lives were in that time period.

Love the history here. The brick wall, the old headstones, well-kept grounds. The church was not open - hopefully we can see inside next trip.

So disappointed we could not go in but the church itself is fantastic and the grounds with the cemetery feel like a step back in time. An easy walk from Bay St. Well worth it.
I love going in churches and it feels strange to "rate" a house of God but I surely would have rated 5 if I could have gone in and just say quietly soaking up the history of the sanctuary.
Highly recommend and take some time to read the inscriptions, see the tombs of the soldiers and a few prominent families with multiple generations buried in close proximity.

The graveyard was historic and interesting, but we were disappointed that we could not see inside the church as it was locked up

learned about on the carriage tour so came back to explore - tombstones from 1700s/Revolutionary War to modern day. Lots of cool stories if you Google.

I could stay here to hours and just soak up the peace and quiet. Loved reading the headstone inscriptions. The history around the church is amazing. Thank you for sharing your place with visitors. And for the beautiful message on the sign.

Walking this historic area in Beaufort was a lovely experience and a must do when you're in Beaufort. There are many facets of this town that you'll miss if you do not. St. Helena's is one of them. The church itself is both impressive and calming. Well worth walking amongst the tombstones while considering this history.

Bay Street is full of shops and restaurants. If you're interested in the Gullah culture and history, take a tour with Gullah Geechee Mahn. Sareta was an excellent tour guide.

The Historic Beaufort Foundation Guide says only that "Federal troops adapted the church for use as a hospital, uprooting slabs from the graveyard for use as operating tables. The present altar was built and donated by the sailors of the U.S.S. New Hampshire stationed here during Reconstruction."
