Old St. Andrew's Parish Church in Charleston, South Carolina, is described as a simple, elegant church. No spires, no Gothic architecture, no bell tower. Located at 2604 Ashley River Road, it was founded in 1706 and is the oldest surviving church structure in South Carolina. It was one of 10 Anglican churches established by South Carolina's Church Act of 1706 and the original church was build the same year, then expanded to its current cruciform plan in 1723. It wasn't used from 1891 to 1948, then underwent extensive and steady restoration and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The interior is a treasure to behold. Three worship services are held every Sunday. Historically, the church hides a past that has left it for dead many times. It survived a major fire in the 1760s, was one of the few buildings along Ashley Road that Union troops didn't burn to the ground during the Civil War and survived the Great Earthquake of 1886 and Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

This is one of the oldest churches in the Charleston, SC area. They have an annual tea room in the early spring. It is very popular and draws a large crowd. The food is very good and the personnel from the church make you feel very welcome.

This quaint early 18th church is a treasure of colonial architecture with wonderful grounds to walk about. Constructed in 1706, this church is the oldest surviving church structure in South Carolina. Definitely worth a visit when in the area.

Singing in the choir at Old Saint Andrews this whole year almost makes me feel I am disqualified from writing a review of the church. But on the other hand, who better perhaps to tell you about what a place it is?
Yes, there is tons of history there. And the latest renovation has resulted in an austere but chastely beautiful interior. The people who attend there are passionate about their church and its mission. And they are also very friendly. And if you stay after the 11am church service on Sunday, the spread in Gilchrist Hall is often a substantial lunch - sandwiches, sweets, and often hot entrees as well.

This church merits a stop even if you just admire it from the outside. If you are fortunate to be there during the tea room, have some okra soup and Huguenot torte and then tour the inside if the sanctuary. A member wrote a history and you can find lots of history on their website.

This architectural style cruciform church is listed as the oldest surviving structure used for worship south of Virginia. It was originally built in 1706 for the planters on the nearby plantations, but has undergone several renovations since then. It is beautifully restored and is still an active Episcopal congregation today. In the adjoining cemetery, there are several original gravestones left after an earthquake hit the area many years ago. The church is set back from the road in a lovely pastoral setting.

I always enjoy this time of year. It's Tea Room season. I always enjoy the drive out to the Old St Andrews Parish Church. The church has been having the tea room for over 60 years. There is a gift shop with local crafts, preserves, clothing, and plants. The tea room menu has all of the traditional fare with shrimp paste or chicken salad sandwiches, she crab or okra soup, and homemade desserts. The ladies who work at the door wear period dresses. My favorite part is to be seated with total strangers at a table and get to know everyone. Never worry about going alone because you can be seated with people and have wonderful conversation. After your meal, you can walk over and tour the old church and the cemetery ground. Usually the azaleas are blooming, but the late freeze killed all of the blooms so it's not as pretty this year. This is truly a local experience and many of the people who visit have been doing so for years. It's fun and you may even find some unique Easter basket items. Definitely this is a fantastic tea room and church.

My mom is a member here and I attend special events occasionally. It is old and lovely. There is an old cemetery on the grounds that is worth a look. Lots of history.
If you're here in the spring, when azaleas are in bloom, it is like a picture you'd see on a post card. Also in the spring, they have a Tea Room, serving a very Southern menu, and a gift shop, featuring hand made items from the church family. Check for dates and try to attend.

I was lucky to arrive at Old St Andrews Church just as morning service was ending -- so I was able to walk around the light-filled interior. Built in 1706, this is one of the oldest "chapels of ease" in the South Carolina. Some highlights are the cast iron railing, the wrought iron baptismal font (including Pelicans!) and the black cypress reredos. It is believed that the panels that are part of the reredos are original to the building although they have been touched-up over time. This chapel is on the main road to the large plantations so you can easily add it to your tour itinerary.

I happened to stop in here by chance and was so glad that I got out and explored! This is the oldest standing church building in SC and the cemetery is beautiful. Lots of history here. Well worth the stop to wander and pay respect to the departed.
