We’ve been here time and time again, we never miss it each year during our Edisto visit. It is such a unique experience with so many reptiles. The workers are friendly and knowledgeable, and the animals seem very well taken care of. Many of the same alligators are still there from our first visit years ago.
They have shows and unique interactive experiences. It may only take a couple of hours even if you did all the shows, so plenty of time to explore the island the rest of your day.

This place is absolutely epic. Our family was blown away by one of the coolest animal places/exhibits we have ever seen. While this place is not huge, it makes up for that in some very large exhibits where you get to see snakes, turtles, and gators roam. Our daughter’s favorite area was the turtles, where we probably spent almost 40 minutes watching them swim, burrow, eat, etc. The outdoor snake exhibits are extremely entertaining. We had fun counting the snakes and seeing all of the different places they could hide or go. The only thing we were not overly impressed with was the gift shop, which didn’t have a ton of variety and was a little overpriced. Overall, excellent visit!

This is the common question I heard at the Serpentarium on a hot day, when the critters are sleepy and still. The turtles were fun to watch, as was the entertaining snake show. The gators are huge and impressive, but they didn’t set any speed records on the morning we visited. Having visited Gator World in Orlando, I found the bull gators less active and the gator feeding less exciting than at the place in Orlando. Also, the natural jungle setting made it kind of tricky to get a good view of the gator feeding unless you get to the pond early and stand right at the feeding tower. Still, the lectures were interesting and informative. Some of the indoor exhibits took a little time to find the critter in its enclosure, and again, I wondered if they were alive or stuffed. There was a small snack bar, but it was closed for renovation and you could purchase chips and drinks in the gift shop, which was sort of small. (That is, smaller than the one at a typical Cracker Barrel.) Still, I’d pay a visit to the Serpentarium. While showing its age a bit, it is still photogenic, educational, and interesting for all ages.

Very knowledgeable staff . Interesting presentations. Would highly recommend for everyone! You were able to hold a snake and see both venomous and non venomous snakes. Super cool turtles.

Wonderful place to take your kids. They have several shows, one is how to extract venom from a snake, then feeding a gator, plus others. Your receipt is good for the day so you can leave and comeback the same day.

Wonderful , educational, fascinating experiance! Knowledgable, friendly staff , beautifully maintained healthy animals and loads of history. Baby nile crocs , anaconda, every venonmous snake type and non venomous snake type in the state and stunning enclosures or rather outclosures. The outdoor exhibits are a living I SPY game ! The facility is super clean . bathrooms prisitine and the giftshop extremely reasonably priced. My older teen and I enjoyed this visit . Little ones have short attention spans , they will enjoy it , however for little ones, this is a one and done. For older kids and adults , depending on your interests you could spend all day here. We spent several hours. The snake show was informative and well presented. A word of caution, they do a live feeding, which could be traumatic to some . As a reptile keeper, of course we were not bothered, however i can understand how someone unfamilar with a live feeding and the sounds etc could be upset witnessing . One highlight from the day , during the snake show , one of the Bull Alligators got very territorial and let off a rumbling that really shakes you to the core. I grew up around gators , gators in the back yard, gators in the lakes and ponds and this was the first time i ever heard a bull "roar". Terrifying! Fantastic day , highly recommend. My only quibble, and it is minor, is the lack of engagement with the turtles. They have alligator snappers, red earred sliders, diamond terrapins, 2 endangered spotted turtles, box turtles, a gopher tort, an african spurred tort, cooters and more. The staff is very engaging when it comes to the snakes and the gators but not a word was uttered about the turtles. I think this is a missed opportunity. Great day . Will visit again! Oh and they give 15 percent off military/veteran discount .

Went during the off season and all that was available was the indoor exhibit. Because of this the entry fee was half. We knew this was the situation before we arrived.

We enjoyed what we were able to see inside and it was very educational. Based on what we saw I would come back and pay more to see more when the entire place is open.

Hint: In the center of the atrium is an exhibit which you may think is empty. It is not. It likely the huge snake that live in it are high up in the trees or curled up on a rock. She will see several snake skins on the tree where they have shed their skins.

A small serpentarium located on Edisto Island right off a main road about a 3 hour drive from Columbia SC.

Purchasing a pass gives you access to all the exhibits and shows. I suggest taking a couple hours to enjoy the facility and the area.

My sister and I arrived around Mid Morning from Columbia. We purchased our tickets at the store and went directly to a animal-handler show in the small, covered, outdoor theater with tiered benches. After that we wandered around the majority of the outdoors exhibits and took in the Alligator feeding show. By this time we were hungry and instead of getting random junk food at the canteen we left the facility in search of food before the next show we wanted to watch. We found a place 7 minutes down the road, had lunch and came back. We made our way straight to the outdoor Non venomous snake enclosure to watch the feeding. I do not recommend this to small children who will be uncomfortable with mice being killed. As an adult it was fascinating to watch the snakes so activity and a rare chance to watch then stalk prey and utilize their various skills and techniques. There is no seating and every spot is a good spot for viewing as they basically set mice free through the exhibit and you can watch non venomous snakes eating in the water, on the ground and in the trees. After that we moved to the venomous snake live feeding which was much less action-filled as they use toxins to kill their prey and are much less active. These shows were only available on certain days. After that it was quite hot in the sun so we went indoors and wandered around the small indoor section of exhibits, where they were also feeding the animals. We also wandered the gift shop before heading out and back to Columbia.

I would not make this a whole day trip again but if I was in the area I might go back and have a wander. One time with the live feedings was enough for both my sister and I.

I recommend McConkey's Jungle Shack for lunch. They had wonderful seafood and were very close to the serpentarium. It can get quite busy mid-day in July so be prepared to wait a little, if you want to sit down on the porch. They do take-away, which is what we did and ate in the blissful air-conditioning of the car listening to music.

A great trip. Staff is extremely knowledgeable. Very clean too. The animals were incredible. We stayed for the snake show and alligator feeding. My son really loves snakes, but his brother and sister also enjoyed themselves. Great time. Highly recommend.
