As we drove in we saw some wildlife. We really enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Walked out to see the driftwood, there were plenty on the beach area. It was a pretty good walk out there but well worth it. We found several nice sized shells but placed them on the driftwood. A highly recommended place to visit!

Botany Bay is a fabulous gem near Edisto. The info map at the check in point guides you through the area. The info in the guide map was so informative and helped us understand what we were seeing.
It took us about 45 minutes to drive the property including several little photo stops along the way. We walked out to Driftwood Beach as well and it was definitely worth the walk. Highly suggest going at low tide for the best Driftwood Beach experience.

We didn't know about this place till someone at the Edisto Museum suggested to go. Boy we are happy we did ,real a cool place to visit with alot history and a wonderful short walk to the beach. The beach is nothing we have seen so natural and untouched . Beware you can not take any shells or there is a $470 fine . We drove the plantation route it also was interesting, we are happy we took the time to visit this beautiful land God has given us to enjoy.

The Preserve is a wonderful place to tour. The Beach was amazing in an "eerie" way. I have never seen anything like it! Be sure to go at Low Tide for the best experience and pick up a shell to hang from a branch.

Very interesting, we drove thru and visted all the historic spots on the map. Highlight was the driftwood beach. We did see any snakes even though many signs cautioned not to run over snakes. Road was a bit bumpy but you got to see a good over view of various marsh habitats. Saw a gator in one of the ponds and lots of different birds and wild flowers.

Such a moody surreal vibe at the beach- definitely worth the walk! The tour through fields was informative, and the sunflowers were gorgeous. Saw an armadillo and lots of birds.

The drive to this location is breathtaking! The trees are beautiful and explicitly shaped. The walk to the beach is also interesting as there are so many little creatures in the swampy areas, if you look close. Once on the beach, you are overwhelmed with white drift wood trees and branches everywhere. I'm glad people respect the (no taking samples of wood or shells), as seen placed on the different roots or branches to be viewed and enjoyed by all. The white sand is so soft, the sound of the surf and the warmth from the sun...heavenly. it's like a remembrance place. These wonderful trees were once enjoyed when in bloom, and now, they are still enjoyed in the beauty of their restful shapes. I could have stayed here forever!!

This was a solo trip for me. My time at Botany Bay was some of the most special on my trip. It was so peaceful and private. I went back twice! Highly highly recommend for beautiful views and peaceful beach moments.

Is it one way in and one way out or does the trail circle around? Also, how long does it take to go through the preserve?

The information provided is correct.
There’s a longish walk to the beach after signing in and, depending on the tide, you can spend a lot of time exploring the wide beach, or find that you can only glimpse the beach from the end of the pathway. It’s critical that you time your visit when it’s low tide for the best experience.

Anytime I hear the words Plantation - and Heritage Preserve together in a place title, I feel a cringe and wonder what type of place it is and the people I will meet. When one says Heritage Preserve, it makes me think of preserving a heritage we fought to destroy rather than a nature preserve that this is. So my question is - what is this place preserving? Nature or Heritage?

Can you access the beach for sunrise or sunset or only 8-5?

We have been there for sunrise. Gates open before so you can be at the beach to take in the wonder of it all. Check for high tides. Much of the beach has eroded from past storms, but it is still a magical place full of shells and trunks of dead trees that take on fantastical shapes.

On the day we had gone, it was around 10:00 a.m. but as Howard P stated, the tides change. The resort we stayed in gave us a tide chart and we also Googled tide times for the area.

Hi, Alleyne. What would you like to know about this attraction? We visited Botany Bay last June and the beach area was closed due to the causeway being washed out from the hurricane. Is the causeway repaired and is there access to that wonderful beach now? We were told, when we visited last year, that they were thinking of not repairing the damage. Thank you for your assistance.
