Great family activity

We decided to visit Wades Gold Mill because we thought the kids would like it and we were right. Such a fun and inexpensive activity. The people were so friendly and patient and the kids are still talking about it. The kids are 4 and 6 and we’re perfect ages. We will definitely be back.

Great experience

We spent 1.5hrs with Annette teaching us the secrets of gold panning. The place is not commercial at all and after few minutes it seems to be part of the family Wade. My kids (4 and 10) loved the experience. A must do in Hill City

Have a 13 and 11 year old for children. They said this was by far the best time they had while visiting the Black Hills! Great and friendly staff. Had to watch a short video and the. Went with an instructor to show us the proper way to pan. Loved it!

Great spot for panning! Super friendly and helpful.

We really enjoyed our stop at Wade’s. It is less commercial than some of the other nearby mines and there is hands-on instruction and help. After a short video, you receive a lesson on panning with a small sample that already has gold flakes to find and keep. Then, you take a scoop from the ore pile and go sit in the creek to try and find more. There are other ‘gems’ to be found, including garnet as you perfect your panning (more scoops can be purchased). One of our party did find a decent size flake. This is a very quaint and relaxing experience with extremely friendly staff.

Wade’s Mine Museum

We really enjoyed visiting Wade’s Gold Mill. It was only a 5 minute bicycle ride from Hill City, SD. They have real working mill systems in operation including stamping and ball mills. And, the kids can pan for gold. Very unusual collection of mining equipment that actually runs. Lots of fun!

“A Must” for Your Hill City Visit

We had an outstanding experience and definitely recommend Wade’s Gold Mill for those with young children. This is truly a hands-on and authentic experience panning for gold and rocks. We were immediately greeted when we pulled up the driveway and invited to watch a brief video about the history of the Wade family gold mill. It was produced several decades ago, but I wasn’t there for a high-tech production so I didn’t care about the quality. It was great to learn of the brief history of the mill.

From there, we decided to pay for a panning experience for both our children. We had a personal guide (Ray) that walked us through the proper planning process. He modeled, assisted, and then let the boys do it on their own. But then he double-checked to be sure nothing was left behind. My boys were so excited to have found 6-7 gold flakes/specks and were able to take them home.

I thought that was the end of the experience, but nope. Our guide then had the boys fill a pan with ore and took us down to the creek to do some additional panning. Even though we didn’t have any gold in those pans, they were able to keep all the cool rocks and quartz that they found.

We had a chance to meet Mr. Wade too, which was cool. All of the staff that we met this morning were so generous and polite.

I definitely recommend this experience for your family and hope you have as much fun as we did.

We saw this on trip advisor and it had good reviews so we decided to check it out. When we got there at the top of the hill and you look down the driveway and was a little iffy it looked a little run down but we checked it out anyways and we are glad we did. It was one of the best places we visited. We payed for the tour and the gold panning and we had a blast we choose to do the panning in the creek and we are glad we did it was so much fun and piecefull. My husband and I were the only ones there and the staff treated us with great informative service. They even turn on some of the michens too.you defiantly learn alot about mining. Definitely check this place out. Look for one small hand painted sign on the edge of town that is all they have for signs.

Awesome time!

My Aunt and I went and had a blast! We did both the panning lesson's and the tour. We found gold and an assortment of cool rocks. I can't speak highly enough about the tour and the knowledgeable staff there! Not only do you get to walk through a guided museum by a very knowledgeable person but the also turn on the equipment so you can see that actual stuff working! It was incredible. The gift shop prices are extremely reasonable and even buying a soda or water was only $0.75. We'll be visiting again soon.

Family vacation fun

There were 6 of us who went to Wade's but only the 2 kids who were with us panned. When we pulled in we thought we'd made a mistake. It is old and doesn't look the greatest but don't let that fool you. This is an authentic gold panning experience and the people who work with you are the real deal. The Wade family has been in the gold mining business for a very long time so that's what makes it so authentic. The 2 kids, aged 8 and 11, had a great time and the 4 adults had fun watching them. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting this part of the Black Hills!
