The view from the overlook is peaceful and shows the lake and mountains of the area. My favorite reason to go is the abundance of birds that are near the tail water side of the dam. Heron and Egret nest along the river and feed at the base of the dam when the generators are active and stir the activity of fish. I've seen herons, cormorants, osprey and even the occasional eagle. There are usually fishermen at the base of the dam and there is camping just downstream. If you are looking for some quiet time, drop by and relax a bit.

We crossed the dam a couple of times providing us great views of both the lake and the river on the other side. The dam itself, though historical as part of the TVA, doesn’t have any outstanding features other than the view and the history.

Stopped here on a whim this visit to the Smokies. We got off the Deep Springs exit on I-40 and followed the signs for the Dam. It was probably about a 15 minute drive from the interstate. Once there we decided to check out the upper area that overlooked the Dam and the power house. Here there was ample free parking. At the top there were some picnic tables, grills and grassy areas to play in. I believe there was also a port-a-potty here too if needed. At the edge of the overlook there was an informational sign about the Dam and some benches. While we were there we saw a man bird watching. He said he was watching Eagles.
I did see a paved path that led down towards the dam. We did NOT walk down there.
Also you can choose to drive down beside the powerhouse if you want. We did not do so. Once we left, we made a left onto 388 and headed over towards the Dam Store. Heading this way, you will cross over a bridge that gives you an excellent view of the Dam.
Overall, we enjoyed our short visit at the Dam Overlook. IF you are in the area, I would recommend.

We love coming here! People are great and the fishing is some of the best. We love it so much we bought a camper here close to the lake. The sunsets are breath taking!!! Plenty of really interesting history here in Dandridge if you are into that.

We go to Douglas Dam frequently. We love to watch the birds and the water. They have an upper parking area where they have picnic tables and beautiful views of the waterways. There are bathroom facilities at the upper viewing area. We have seen turkeys, coumarin, ducks and Greater Blue Herons. We also have spotted an Eagle or two flying near the same skills at area.

When I took the exit to get gas..I saw a sign for the dam. I inquired at the gas station if it was close by. I didn't want to venture to far off course and the clerk said it was about 3 miles away..so I took off.
The drive in here is beautiful. The dam started construction in Feb of 1942 and took a little over a year to build. It is a hydroelectric facility and has 4 generating units. It has a net dependable capacity of 111 megawatts. The reservoir has 28,420 acres of water surface and 513 miles of shoreline for recreational activities.
There are several overlooks here. I pulled into the upper overlook. Guests can walk out and get a great view. Or you can take the walking path down to the bottom and get an even better look. I just took a look from up at the parking area. It was raining this day and I really didn't feel like being out in the rain. But from here you get a great look at the dam. You can see the lake and imagine the power it takes to hold all that water back. It is also very very noisy from where I am at. I can only imagine being down closer. I just hopped out, took a few pictures, and got back out on the highway headed to Indiana.
There are several overlooks to take you to the top and bottom of the dam. They did have picnic tables where I was at. Parking is free. They also have a campground nearby.
I guess you can spend a while here and had it not been raining, I probably would have. But if you have more time to explore..it certainly is an area worth exploring. But if you are in a hurry..it is a nice little side trip.

Really neat area. It is not everyday you can walk right up to a dam and watch the water rushing out. There were fishermen all around and abundant wildlife. The viewing areas were nicely maintained and informative. Not only a view of the dam but all the surrounding area. If your coming to the area I would recommend stopping. The price is nothing and you can stay as little or long as you wish.

There is a parking lot at the Dam where you can get out and walk near the Dam. Take pictures and see the massive structure. We did not see any access to go inside. Recommend to stop by if you are in the area

Enjoyable drive below the dam where there's a campground and several spots to park and walk. Drive up near the base of the dam for a good view. As you leave this area, drive up to the observation deck on top of the hill. Great spot for a picnic and a beautiful view of the lake and mountains. Bring your camera

Not for the overlook or the picnic area. But there is a fee for camping at the campground

Go down Douglas Dam road and take the turn for Douglas Dam Pavilion and Overlook. You cannot miss it.

We did see people fishing. There's a parking lot and a nice shore, with grassy area and sidewalks, as well as some picnic tables.

We drove around the lake and across it, but never saw a sign or turn-off for the dam. If we are coming from Sevierville on Rt 66, how do we get to the dam and visitor center?

From Highway 66 - the main road in Sevierville, take highway 338 or also named Douglas Dam Road on the right at an Exxon station on 66. Travel 338 for a few miles and you will cross a bridge over the French Broad River and you will see the Dam on the right as you cross the bridge. The next right will allow you to visit the Dam and follow the signs. You can view the Dam from above or below to see the power plant and base of the Dam.
