We were here about 30 years ago. Still peaceful and beautiful. Lots of trails was too cool for lake fun but plan to go back. Camped this time but would like to bring grandchildren next time

If you're looking for a place to hike and enjoy some fantastic woods, bluffs, caves, and native American shelter caves, this is the place. Numerous trail that range from easy to strenuous are found in the park. I was there in late August so it was very warm in the afternoon hours. Suggest you get an early start if you plan on being there during the summer. The forest is exceptionally green and thick, nothing like the woods around my home in Arkansas. This place reminded me of a Vietnam jungle.

Pickett State Park is an absolute gem, both for the quiet and solitude it provides and for the natural beauty of its geology and wildlife. We were initially attracted to it because of the historic CCC cabins and its designation as an International Dark Sky Park, but it definitely provided on both of those points but so much more. The trails in the park and in surrounding properties (Pogue Creek State Natural Area, Twin Arches State Natural Area, Big South Fork NRRA) provided just enough challenge for our family, including a six-year-old child, and we were greeted by rock houses, natural bridges, and other rock formations at every turn, along with migrating birds and spring wildflowers. We also did the ranger-led hike to see the glow worms in Hazard Cave, and that was a definite highlight. It's definitely a quieter park, but it was the perfect fit for us. We're sure we'll be back.

This park is under utilized. Glow worms (early June) and renovated CCC cabins were the initial attraction. The location is great, close to many other natural areas (Colditz) and parks (Cordell Hull) and town isn't too far although it's twisty roads. The lady at the visitor center where you pickup the cabin key was friendly and let us know that's where to pay for paddling rentals too. The cabins are close to the small but real sand beach and the boat shed, and ours smelt like smokey bacon. Sitting on the screened porch was relaxing listening to the rain on the huge leaves outside. Rhododendron and magnolia blooms were ending but check out the size of it! We paddled around the island where the foliage looked jungle-like and under the stone bridge which was in an old photograph on the wall of the cabin. There were more miles of trails than we could do in a few days. The biggest difficulty was finding the unmarked parking lot to start the John Muir trail which connected to the tunnel trail, but walking along the creek and making several crossings was a great way to beat the heat. It was humid and it rained both nights so we didn't get to see the stars as hoped for, but we'd definitely return to hike more trails. Do be aware the office isn't open in the evenings but they do have a wifi, and cell service is spotty.

Just wanted to leave a good review ! We just spent the weekend down there camping and we did the hazard cave night hike with ranger mike and he was so awesome and knowledgeable….the hike itself was incredible but he made the whole experience and even better …he was insightful , took his time and could answer just about any questions that were asked .you could really tell he genuinely enjoyed his job and cared how our experience was !

Beautiful park. We didn’t see any litter on any path which is unusual. Book a night hike to see glow worms at Hazard Cave. It’s amazing. Also not far from park is Twin Arches park which was a great find.

We hiked Hazard Cave and Natural Bridge on a whim. So glad that we did. The park is a hidden gem. Both of the destinations were awesome. Bring a camera and take plenty of pictures.

We spent a wonderful afternoon at Pickett Memorial State Park. We had our small dog with us and we enjoyed having a picnic right next to the water. The crows tried to take our bag of dog biscuits the minute we stepped away from the table so don't leave anything out that you don't want pecked or stolen. We then took a walk on the suspension bridge. It was very relaxing, not shaky like some bridges. Then we used the clean restroom. Finally we took a boat ride in a flat bottomed boat. There were other watercraft available as well. I am older and walk with a cane, but the boatman and a Ranger helped steady the boat when I got in. They were so nice. There is a surprise on the boat ride that I didn't tell my husband about so that was really fun when we came upon it. To get out of the boat I just sat on the dock and got up that way. There is also a nice beach there for swimming and of course lots of hiking trails. Nature has made all sorts of botanical displays every where you look with fern, moss and wildflowers.

We stopped by here on our way home. It is absolutely beautiful. We loved walking on the swinging bridge. I wish all parks were as beautiful and CLEAN as this.

Lots to do in a small place. Bring your kayak and paddle under the natural bridge on the lake. A lot of great trails.

I am looking to stay at Pickett State Park at the end of August, but I will be flying into the area, so I will not have food to cook dinners for my family of 5. Is there any place to eat somewhat close to the park that we could easily leave and come back during the day?

Hi. there. Unfortunately, Pickett State Park is rural enough that there aren't any nearby food options for going out to eat. The closest small town (Jamestown, TN) is about 25 minutes out one-way, and there isn't a wide offering of options there. If you are staying at a cabin in the park, I would recommend instead that you make a stop in Jamestown to buy groceries on the way in and use those to make meals while you're staying the park. All of the family-sized cabins have full kitchens, and we prepared all of our meals that way when did a three-day stay there back in May 2022. Good luck with your trip planning!

Yes, bring your own kayak or canoe. We've launched our tandem inflatable kayak from the rental place's dock, no problem. The small lake is absolutely quiet and very beautiful, and a paddle under the natural arch is unforgettable.

How early in the season are the swim beaches warm enough for swimming?
Do the rustic cabins have fire rings? I saw they had grills, but we would like to wake a camp fire.
The cabin I stayed at, had an outside spot near the picnic table and grill. It wasn't fancy. It was a circle of rocks. The park keeps the cabins supplied in wood and we used the wood to sit around a bonfire outside. But bring your own lawn chairs
