Good view of the city and mountains but overall a disappointing experience, fortunately, the price is not too expensive, but nothing to dream about it.

At our visit there was not a person at a kiosk, so tickets were only available online. Once you figure that out and purchase your tickets, you just wait outside the elevator to go up to the top. It's always great to see a city from above! It was a sunny clear day, so easy to see the city.
Wish there had been more explanations for what you were seeing in the distance....buildings, etc. But it was enjoyable!!

It’s a must see if you come to Knoxville. The Sunsphere offers great views of the Knoxville area and the mountains. The observatory has a little timeline and picture of the world’s fair, and gives you a complete 360 degree view. Tickets are timed for every half hour (and only cost $5/person) which is more than enough time to explore.

If you wonder where you're going in Knoxville, just look up like the little aliens did to the claw in toy story and you'll see "the ball!" If you're ever looking for guidance or just a pretty view from the morning sunrise on the city, look no further than "the ball!"

We wanted to go up in the tower and we had to drive around for about 30 minutes trying to find a parking spot as there is no public parking nearby. Very disappointing, by the time we got there after a long walk, they had already closed the tower for to go up. We had even timed it to be there in plenty of time, but there is not close parking at all.

If you’re looking for a way to get a view of the city, this is it. We were visiting Knoxville for the first time and we weren’t sure if we wanted to pay the money to go up, but we’re ultimately glad that we did. It’s nothing spectacular but it’s a nice view. I enjoyed the free selfie station. The World Fair area around the Sunsphere was dead during our visit but still interesting to see. If you’re in the area, it’s worth going up the Sunsphere.

They were doing some renovations when we visited this site. The grounds and park itself was beautiful. The river running around it was really nice, and the sidewalk trails were an easy walk.

The Sunsphere delivers exactly what it promises: a 360-degree bird's eye view of Knoxville and the surrounding hills. So for $5, if you're in Knoxville, and would like to see that view, by all means get a ticket.
I found it humorous that the promotional materials for the Sunsphere specifically liken it to the Eiffel Tower and the Seattle Space Needle, “other famous icons constructed specifically for World’s Fairs." Looking down at Knoxville sure isn't like looking down at Paris. LOL.
I feel constrained to note that the windows of the Sunsphere were really dirty and needed a good cleaning.

If you're looking for an iconic place in Knoxville this is it. The Sunsphere tower surrounded by beautiful parks in the the downtown area. Very easy to get to off the highway or from the shops downtown. We found plenty of parking nearby and a public washroom near the foot of the tower. Well worth the visit

I just checked the Visitor's Center website. They say that

is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 4 pm to 9 pm. I called the number listed but received no answer. However, today is Wednesday. You might try calling the number listed at a time they are supposed to be open to verify.

Yes, to get inside it is free and the observation deck is also free. I believe there was a restaurant on one of the levels, which obviously would cost you, and you might have to pay for parking nearby to check this out, but the parking garages are pretty reasonable pricing. Overall, yes this attraction is free.

the Sunsphere Observation Deck, 4th Level is open to the public. It offers a 360-degree view of the original 1982 World's Fair site (now World's Fair Park), downtown Knoxville, the Tennessee River, the University of Tennessee, and the Smoky Mountains. There is no admission charge to visit the Observation Deck and access is limited to the double elevators facing the lake at the base of the Sunsphere and at the Convention Center level.
Dining on the 5th level of the Sunsphere houses a restaurant and bar called the Icon Ultra Lounge. Contact in advance for more information.
The 6th level of the Sunsphere houses an event floor called the Sunsphere Event Floor.
