What a fantastic afternoon with Martin!

Martin met us at Glendalough where he walked us around the grounds, teaching us about the history of this beautiful place and its surrounding environs. He is witty and engaging. We felt like he was an old friend within the first five minutes of knowing him. You cannot go wrong with this tour!

A beautiful experience

Experiencing Glendalouch with Martin Swords was a highlight of our trip to Ireland back in August of 2019. The valley is filled with stunning scenery, lovely lakes and rich monastic history. Hiking it with Martin was such a joy as he shared with us his knowledge of Irish history, wonderful stories of the valley and love of poetry. "And then there was St. Kevin and the Blackbird"....

A highlight of our trip

Martin was an exceptional guide and the perfect way to start our Ireland journey. He had great knowledge of the area and knew the perfect spots to take pictures and grab a bite to eat. Glendalough and the Wicklow mountains were one of our favorite spots in Ireland and I would never have appreciated it as much without Martin. In addition, he was flexible when we had some unexpected car trouble on the way down and he customized the tour so we could hit the sheepdog show next to the monastic site in time. He was very patient with us and really made us feel special, including sharing with us his poetry. It was one of the highlights of our trip and I will highly recommend the tour to anyone!

Wonderful tour

Martin was great. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the history. Highly recommend his tour. We saw alot of what we learned from him throughout our trip. He went above and beyond for us and we are very appreciative.

Magical evening in Glendalough

Glendalough Monastic City in the Wicklow mountains is an absolute must-see if you're visiting Dublin and the surrounding area ... and I can't imagine a better way that I could have spent my time there than with Martin Swords as my guide.
Mr. Swords is both charming and relaxed and made sure that my wife, friends and I were completely comfortable and refreshed before leading us on a lyrical, informative, entertaining and at times completely funny tour of the Glendalough Monastic site as well as both the Upper and Lower lakes.
He stopped and explained the historic significance of all the key structures on the site - everything from the tall clock tower to the small bullaun stones and did it in a style that drew us back all the way to the past to give us a real tangible connection to the place. He wove in quotations and poetry from other elements of Irish history ranging from GK Chesterton to Seamus Heaney as well.
We came away having learnt all about the site, with an appreciation for the legends and history and lore of the place, as well as with a deeper appreciation of the Irish people and culture from this guided walk.
Thank you for an amazing experience that my family and friends will cherish always !!

Thank you Avik, family and friends, it was my pleasure to guide you in Glendalough. I think we all enjoyed the guided walk, I did as much as you. When the group chemistry in such a beautiful place is good, they we all enjoy the day. Thank you Avik for indicating that you had read and liked my poetry before we met in Glendalough, and I know you liked the Poetry quotations that are part of the walk. It was a delight to know that you have one of my books 'Glendalough Calling', in good hands, where it will be enjoyed. I hope also that the rest of your holiday was enjoyable and memorable. Traveling with a Bard

You will be very fortunate to visit Glendalough with such a well-informed guide who manages to make you forget how tired you are and how crowded the paths can be on a busy summer weekend. I realized that I was not that fit to complete the walk (which was at a leisurely pace), but Martin was extremely accommodating and made adjustments to our itinerary without making me feel like a weak-kneed loser! I saw hordes of people not fully appreciating the historic value of their surroundings and I could very well have been one of those clueless tourists, but Martin shared his deep knowledge of Glendalough with us in such an engaging and even lyrical manner. Thanks for your patience, wisdom, and poetry, Martin! (And sorry for this very late review!). I'll never forget the legend of St. Kevin and the Blackbird and your riveting rendition of Seamus Heaney's poem! ----F. from the Philippines

A little piece of Irish heaven with Martin Swords

We met Martin Swords at the Glendalough Hotel for what turned out to be a wonderful 3 hour journey through Irish history. Martin was fantastic as he guided us through the Glendalough Monastic Site. He made the journey seem like minutes as we followed in the footsteps of St.Kevin. His style of guiding is very relaxed and informal as he ensures he passes on every gem of information while taking pictures along the way to the upper lake where he asked to sit down and proceeded to read us a beautiful piece of poetry. It was just the 2 of us and Martin made the occasion very special. A memory we will keep in our hearts forever. Thanks Martin. All the best for your future tours. We will always recommend you!

Great to learn from Martin about the history of Glendalough

We were lucky to walk with Martin in the afternoon in may, it was not as busy as during the mornings and we had absolute lovely weather. Martin knows so much about the Irish history and the history of Glendalough, we really enjoyed listening to him. It's much nicer to walk around there and get to hear about it, instead of just walking around yourself and looking things up in a book or online. He really took the time for us (waited patiently while i was taking pictures) and gave us some tips for the rest of our trip. Loved the surrounding, I have to agree with other reviews that the wicklow mountains really are amazing.

Helpful and courteous!

I discovered Martin’s Walks through Trip Advisor. I contacted him with the one day that we will have available on our upcoming trip to Ireland. After numerous helpful and courteous emails, we discovered that he was unavailable for a walk on the day of our visit. He went above and beyond to advise of travel times from Dublin to Glendalough, and of sights to see in Waterford, our next stop. He recommended another tour company that could show us around on our day there, and said to be sure to tell them that he had sent us. Hopefully on our next trip to Ireland, we will be able to go on one of Martin’s Walks!

Miner's Walk

Wicklow Mountains are amazing. Glendalough is the pearl of it. There are many different walking routes there but one of the most picturesque is Miner's Walk (white route). All route is about 10 km and take about 3 hours and it will require considerable physical effor (make sure you wear suitable foot ware) but it worth it. The winding narrow road will lead you up and down, left and right around Upper Lake along streams and waterfall. You can observe the park from the top of the mountain. It is the brilliant view. I recommend to park you car in the Upper Lake parking and start your walk from right bank of the lake if you look towards waterfall. Try it. It really worth it.
