Nice gardens, not suitable for anyone with a walking issue as the ground is uneven. They do supply walking sticks in the shed you pay in. But they are few, so first come first served.
Sone lovely examples of unusual plants and trees. Some modern sculptures scattered around the site, which you can purchase.
The grounds are tended by volunteers, which is commendable.

I am so grateful that I spotted this place, when planning our trip to Dartmoor. It was a truly beautiful location, a good sized site, with stunning plant life and was a perfect place to show the art works they have. It was such a unique place to be and made us just plain happy, whilst strolling around. They had compost loos and a trust based entry payment, where you can scan a QR code, text an amount, or drop in cash to pay. Definitely a highlight of our trip.

Went to visit these gardens after a visit to Spinster's Rock near Chagford ( awesome Neolithic burial chamber).
Tearoom looked lovely (obligatory cream teas!) but was closed. Great toilets, and easy parking.
Gardens themselves are LOVELY. A great place to chill and have a donder and look at the art, or to stretch your legs and have a wee (immaculate eco toilets). Would also be a great place for younger kids to have a run and explore. Really lovely relaxed vibes. Wish we had had more time to explore properly!

Sunday 18th June 2023, my husband and I went to visit Stone Lane Sculpture Gardens in Chagford.
Stone Lane Gardens are a spectacular 5 acre woodland and water garden on the edge of Dartmoor National Park that enchants and inspires in all seasons of the year. It is famous for its National Collections of Birch and Alder trees. Stone Lane Garden is threaded with pools and streams, while gleaming tree bark in a myriads of shades are enhanced and complemented by a varied tapestry of shade-loving plants.
Stone Lane Garden started life back in 1971, as a place for Kenneth Ashburner to start planting the birch and alder trees he was starting to acquire on his trips abroad as well as trees given to him by other collectors. Over his life Kenneth collected more seeds and as the plants outgrew his nursery, so he planted them out in the garden. Kenneth’s gradual and artfully planned landscaping created the framework of the garden you see today.
It is a garden crammed full of unusual and beautiful trees, many of them rarely seen in the United Kingdom. Stone Lane Garden is not just a National Collection; it is a reminder of a world too precious to be ignored.
Stone Lane Garden is also a sculpture garden, and every year they hold a Sculpture exhibition, this year was its 31st celebration and its theme this year was ‘Connectivity – Sense of Place.
It is an important showcase for West Country artists, and is held annually at the gardens within the beautifully landscaped National Collections of Birch and Alder trees.
Amongst groves of trees, pools and streams, individual sculptures can be seen within their own natural ‘frames’. The gardens create a magical setting for this exhibition, and are a photographer’s paradise. My husband and I took loads of photographs, as the sculptures are tucked away around every nook, cranny and corner all around the gardens and are a joy to discover and find.
Whilst all sculptures were good my husband's and my favourite was ‘The Metal Horse’ made from motorbike and car parts, it was a real piece of metal engineering and was a wonder to behold. Once could almost hear the horse breathe.
The 2023 ‘Connectivity – Sense of Place exhibition, showcased twenty artists from Devon, Surrey, Hampshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. It showcased work as diverse as metal birds suspended from the trees to marble cloven hoofs surrounding a tree grove. The media’s ranging from manmade materials to wood and stone.
My husband and I spent most of the morning wandering around this wonderful and creative garden. It even inspired me to write a poem here called ‘Quick, Look & See’.

The gardens were pretty but a tad overpriced for the random informationless sculptures we saw. The woodlands were beautiful. The tea room was advertised as open so we were really disappointed to find it closed on a Saturday in June with no explanation. It seemed some other visitors who had just come to use the tea rooms were also disappointed.

Many thanks for your review. Unfortunately, we had so many visitors to the summer sculpture show just before you came to see it that we ran out of catalogues and had to have more printed. We're sorry that these hadn't arrived in time for your visit. Regarding the tea room, although we left a sign in the window to say we were sorry it was closed you must have missed it. In fact our manager was away celebrating her 70th birthday on 17 June; a once in a lifetime event as you may concur! The arboretum and water garden is indeed very beautiful as many of our other visitors have said in their reviews and we are so glad that you enjoyed it. The Gardens are open every day of the year from 10am till 6pm (dusk in winter) and well worth a visit in any of the four seasons. The view of high Dartmoor from one of our wildflower meadows is particularly spectacular on a clear day and we hope you'll come back to see it at its best.

Stumbled on these gardens en-route toa Dartmoor hotel. The gardens are wonderfully natural and an absolute joy to walk in. An added bonus was the sculpture exhibition which was both interesting and inspirational.
The tea room does a lovely cup of tea too.

A wonderful array of art in a woodland setting which was lovelyto walk aroundin the shadeon such a hot day.
Cafe staffed by a friendly helpful lady.
Shame the streams and ponds were dry but we are in s drought so that wasn't surprising and didn't spoil the visit.

Well worth a visit and the cost... the gardens were dry (it was 34 degrees) but we thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the woodland garden looking at the different sculptures there as well as the range of places some of the trees were from. The lady there was so welcoming and as a disabled person the toilets were fab - so well appointed too!
