Very interesting and good value for money. We were welcomed by knowledgeable museum staff, who gave us an excellent history of the prison from building right through to present day. The exhibits were well displayed and gave lots of information on the history and notable inmates through the years.

Decided to visit the Dartmoor Prison Museum whilst on the moors for the day and really enjoyed it. First of all we encountered the man who takes your money (£12 family ticket - very reasonable) and he was very pleasant and told us how many prisoners they currently have and also explained what the categories mean. We thought the categories referred to severity of crime, but in fact it refers to likelihood of attempted escape. So already we were learning! We were also given a leaflet with some interesting info too. The museum itself is really interesting - you find out what types of prisoners they've had in the past, learn about the different types of prison uniforms and what they mean, you see some of the weapons prisoners have made and some of the ways they hide contraband. There is also a couple of cells you can look in and stories about some of the more famous 'guests' they have had. There is also an area showing off the skills some of the prisoners have and have had, with some amazing art work, models and even a homemade guitar. This really is a fascinating place to visit and is incredibly interesting. Well worth a visit.

Thoroughly interesting and the team there so knowledgeable. It's a 30 min to 1 hour tour in humble opinion so a welcome break

Really interesting and not overly polished experience, lots to read and learn in the shadow of the brooding main prison. staff really knoweldegable and helpul and its peanuts to get in :-) Go

This is a small museum but it is packed with history. It is well curated and brings out the stories of the prisoners and prison staff throughout its history, from the earliest days to items made by prisoners fairly recently. It also brings in the the wider history that the prison was part of. It is fascinating and seeing the real prison opposite, after the visit, is very sobering.

We really enjoyed our visit to this museum. Very informative and interesting to learn about its history. Great value for money - not many rooms but lots to see and learn so we were there well over an hour.

Brilliant little old school museum full of information and interesting bits of history! The curator is full of useful information too if you get the chance to speak to him. Very cheap entry well worth a visit.

My daughter and I had travelled well over an hour to visit the museum, but because their credit card connection was down [ and they refused to take cash ] we weren't allowed entry. This was a completely ridiculous situation - and I feel that as we had attempted to pay in every way we could, we should have been allowed in free of charge, as it was entirely their fault !!

No need to pre-book unless you are a coach party. This allows for a coach parking space to be reserved.

Open daily from 9.30am up until the end of the year. Closed over Christmas, exact dates will be posted on website.

Is it any good for people with limited mobility as I would like to take my grandad
We have an access ramp to the museum itself and 80% of the museum is on one floor with plenty of room for mobility scooters or wheeled walkers. Unfortunately toilets are downstairs but can be reached via wide stone steps with handrail.

Yes they are and given a biscuit on entry if allowed.

Why is there no cafe at the museum? This would make visitors feel more welcome and increase income to then be spent on updating the museum. There is nowhere for visitors to relax at this end of the village, because of this, many visitors (especially the elderly and very young) will be put off the walk to the other end of the village.

Is it open at weekends?
Yes it is open weekends Friday and Sunday 09.30 -16.00 last entry 15.30. Mobday to Thursday & Saturday 9.30 to 16.30. last entry 16.00.

What is the road like between Plymouth and Princetown.? I will be travelling in September.

My initial answer would have been to look at the map and work it out yourself but we did experience some "interesting" conditions within the park this winter. Road by the prison was truly awash and best taken carefully. Many other dips had become fords. Some in and around the park were impassable to low slung sports cars. There was also a dead cow in the road so you just need to take care. If you were walking the moors you'd probably accept the routes "as are" and look more closely at the weather forecast. I reckon on the same approach for driving. Cayenne took it all in it's stride; BMW Z4 wouldn't have stood a chance. "Be Prepared" has been around as a motto for 109 years and is possibly most relevant for people who really want to explore places like Dartmoor!
