We came across this interesting medieval attraction whilst spending a short visit to Stranraer. it is situated in the centre of the town and has a number of floors accessed by a wide spiral staircase. There are exhibits and historical information boards covering tit's many uses, on each floor. The great 360 degree panorama view from the open top of the tower extends in one direction seawards to the ferry port of Cairnryan and beyond. Each direction has an information board highlighting what can be seen in the distance. It is well worth a visit when in the town. It is free to visit with donations for upkeep being welcome

There's not masses which could be done with the building but it has been made as interesting as possible with information about the various uses it was put to over the years.

Well worth a visit. This castle in the centre of Stranraer was unknown to us and we are glad we visited it. Happy to give a donation to this well refurbished building. Gift shop needs rethought out perhaps?
Children would love it as it is not too big. Great views from the roof.

This was just ace (& free).
There was info/exhibits in each of the rooms & the view from the open rooftop was just amazing.
The steps were a bit steep & windy so maybe not suitable if you're not that mobile.
If you're in Stranraer you must pay this a visit.

Once a home, later a court and then a jail, this tower house has had multiple uses since it’s construction in the C16th. Now a museum it still has the original cells. The 360-degree views from the roof are worth the climb. Entry is free.

Only noticed it because I was having a coffee over the road but well worth a look around on a wet day and the fact it is free is even better , just a donation which is great , definitely a big thumbs up from me ..

Situated right in the centre of town, and surrounded with lovely shops and eateries, the Castle is a fun, and free visit for the whole family. Also, lovely views from the top.

We were walking around Stranraer and came across the castle of St John. We did not know it was here, but decided on a walk in.
It was free entry, with donations welcome for some up keep. From the outside it looked smaller than it felt in the inside, and the rooms were nicely set up, and illustrated the different uses the castle has had, and some of the renovations it has.
The stairs are stone cut and can be steep, but is with handrails.
On top, there is a chance to go outside, and see the whole of the area. What was most surprisingly is looking at the pictures from a century ago, and seeing how little has changed.

We were surprised to find this attraction was free. It had little interative games on every floor for the grand children and a great view from the top. Credit to the volunteers who run it.

Hi there - honestly, I don't remember. I'm so sorry I can't be more helpful. Perhaps email them to ask? Both my parents are in their late 60's, so I believe there must have been some sort of hand hold since I don't believe they would have done them otherwise.
