Small but beautifully formed is a good description of Ruthin Historic Market Town.
The main square - St Peter's Square - has some beautiful old half-timbered buildings, black and white, you'd think you were in Alsace.
There's also the Seven Eyes building, with cute dormer windows all round its roof.
The Hen Lys, the Old Courthouse on the Square, is also worth seeing, as is Nantclwyd y dre, 50 yrds along Castle Street.
Continue along that street to the castle gatehouse, walk into the hotel grounds, and peer at the castle ruins on the right. Mind the peacocks who wander around the grounds!
Back to St Peter's Square, you could visit the church St Peter's of course, then go down past the timbered houses, that's Clwyd Street, to see the handsome memorial to the Welsh Formula 1 racing legend, Tom Pryce on the left, then another 100 yds on the right, the Old Jail, a very interesting visit for all the family, with activities for children and prisoners in the cells to spook you out.
If you're here on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, from the Square you could go down Market Street and 50 yds on the right you have the Market.
