On arrival the grounds were beautiful and the receptionist was brilliant,but that’s were it ended for us,our room was dirty, dank and hallways were worn and dirty with paint peeling off the walls and doors,lights not working,carpet thread bare,they changed our room,bathroom had been upgraded but the rest of the room was just as bad,I’m sure there may be some half decent rooms in the building somewhere due to some previous reviews,truly the worst hotel Iv ever been to so much so we didn’t stay,leaving us to find another last minute hotel,it was costly but was worth paying to stay in very nice hotel we found

Booked a spa day with the Rasul Mud Chamber for two with cream tea, private 1 hour hot tub and use of spa facilities.
Mud Chamber was cancelled 2 days before arrival as it had broken down. Offered a variety of alternatives, so we chose for one of us to have a facial, and one of us to have a back, neck and shoulder massage instead of the Rasul Mud Chamber.

Cream tea was fine, then we went down the woodland path past the hot tubs and through a Fire Exit door that was left ajar! (this is the actual entrance to the spa!!)
On arrival we checked in and our booking was confirmed as two back massages even though they had confirmed by email that one was a facial! Anyway that was sorted and changed to a facial. Friends facial was lovely and thorough, my massage however was the worst back, neck and shoulder massage I've ever had.
I had changed into my swimwear in the treatment room after my massage, we were given our locker keys for the changing rooms and went in to store our belongings and for my friend to change into her swimwear.

The changing room is very small with 2 showers that had black mould all in the grouting.
Only 2 very small slatted benches in the changing area, only enough space for 3 people maximum. No private cubicles for changing. Two sinks, 2 hairdryers and very dimly lit lighting, so no good for applying any make up afterwards.
In the ceiling there were spotlights falling out of fittings & some kind of vents that were completeley clogged with some kind of dust?!
The tiles were soaking immediately as you stepped out of the shower. No none slip tiles so the floor was really slippy and dangerous. They opened directly into the same changing area opposite the sinks so the whole floor in the changing area very quickly became wet and slippy.

The 'Spa' area, is anything but. There is a very old and dated Steam Room and a very tired looking Sauna and a shower. THAT IS IT !!
Everything else is seating areas.
Complimentary drinks machine with a sink piled high with dirty cups.
Seating areas with sun lounger seats not Spa relaxation beds.
This may be an old castle building, but it needs a huge amount of investment to bring this place up to date. It hasn't had any money invested into the Spa for probably 20 years!
Everything is tired , shabby, painted over to try and make it look nice and dimmed lighting hoping you won't notice.

The place looks lovely on the outside and very impressive entrance and driveway but it has a very long way to go to even begin to compete with any modern and up to date Spa Hotel.
Give this place a wide birth. Too many better options out there. The prices and offers are there for a reason. You would never go back again, once you had been.

YOUVE BEEN WARNED!

It needed a deep clean and completely refitting out.
It was far too small an area for a Spa, not luxurious and bright and clean as I have experienced at many other Spas.

We booked a 3 hour spa experience (I wouldn't call it a spa day really), and started with the outdoor hot tubs. To my surprise, I loved being outside in the woodland on a chilly December day, with a family of peacocks pottering around right next to us. Very relaxing. We got out just before it got dark as the fairy lights in the trees were due to come on, but that would have been pretty. My aromatherapy masseuse was Angela, who did a very professional job and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The chill out spaces are very dark, dramatic and atmospheric. The 'light lunch' was very light indeed and disappointing. The locker locks need sorting. Ruthin is also a good spot for gift and craft shops, and easy walking distance.

Booked spa day vouchers on line which was fine.
Coming to then use these vouchers was a complete farce.
Rang to book and was told to email the spa. Emailed and was given dates available asked to book a date that was available. No reply for a few days emailed again to ask if they could confirm the booking.
Eventually I got an email back asking to provide a telephone number which I provided.
No call! Assuming it was booked I rang to confirm closer to the time as no more communication from hotel to be told it wasn't booked.
Great!! I then asked for a refund as this was poor service again told to email and it will be passed onto "The management" I then had to chase 2 days later as again no reply from the hotel. Eventually got a call asking for card details to refund the money. Still waiting for a response from "The Management" very poor service. I would bother wasting your time booking anything with this hotel. If they can't get it right from the start you are in trouble. I spoke to another spa retreat in the North Wales area after and they couldn't do enough for me.

So...i booked 2 weeks ago for a spa day for me and my sister over the phone .for me as a care worker to enjoy a spa day every month as a way to relax after working very long hard shifts and also to help with me having fibromyalgia and i thought id treat my little sister as she had lost her mum just few weeks back to cancer.
On arrival we go to reception no sign of our booking what so ever so that was kind of embarrassing because people queuing behind us ,so said they were fully booked she rang threw to see if we could be fitted in for our afternoon tea which we could ,the hot tubs which i booked for an hour were all booked up so we was offerred one that wasnt in use because its on part where building work is going on around it and said we could still use the other faculties but no room for our mud room treatment which we pay extra 30 quid for as was also fully booked .so we go ahead go down for afternoon tea at this point am already not feeling it feeling abit cheesed off and let down and disappointed we get to our table in the peacock room the tea pot spout was crusty with old tea stains cheese was mouldy, the sandwiches looked like they were made last month and the table was being kept level by a scrunched up tissue.
So we spend an hour sat basically ranting about how rubbish it is then thought lets just try make best of a rubbish situation so went to the spa to change for our hour on the building site sorry i ment hot tub , the changing room bins were over flowing ,the locker doors were hanging off hanging on by 1 hinge , my key for my locker opened 6 other lockers which one had someones belongings in ,we was supose to be offerred a glass of pessecco to take to the hot tub which didnt happen .on arrival to the spa was supose to be offerred a drink of some sort that also didnt happen we climb into the hot tub water was really warm quite warm which i didnt mind was nice then my sister asked if it was cleaned regulary i said should imagine so yes then i turned and saw grime all around the edge on inside of the hot tub and floating in the water round the edges so then id really had enough i got out and told my sister to wait there i went had a word and asked for a full refund this is not the experience that i paid for it was a utter disgrace .cheesed off was not the word very disappointing. Then to top it off when i asked for a refund they tried to offer me a so called complimentary spa day for another time to suit me instead of my refund ?? Hang on complimentary that i pay for ? Thats not complimentary in my eyes thats just away of not giving a refund to be fair there was no issue giving us our money back but an offer of a FREE spa day as a apology wouldnt have hurt...but nothing as a gesture of good will . NEVER AGAIN WONT BE GOING BACK .

Am a community care worker who works over 40+ hours a week caring for elderly clients which is hard going mentally and physically ,each month when i get paid i like to go on a spa day with either a friend ,collegue ,or my sister .iv been coming to ruthin castle spa past 2 months was hoping to make it a regular thing as the 1st time we came was kind of not to bad to be fair quite enjoyed it but this time was a whole new level .i booked over the phone 2 weeks ago for me and my little sister who has just lost her mum to cancer only 3 weeks ago so thought be nice for her to chill ect an or me as my monthly chill out from work on days off on arrival they couldnt find our booking so was no space for us i booked the woodland spar experience which should have included afternoon tea ,hour in hot tub the use of the steam room and sauna and i also pay extra for a mud treatment for 2 people for an extra £30 so in total its £100 for the 2 of us because she couldnt find our booking we couldnt be fitted in to have what i had booked 2 weeks earlier she rang threw to try fit us in for afternoon tea which they could fit us in ,wasnt impressed with the after noon tea either the sandwiches were stale and looked as though they had been made last month the tea pot spout was manky with tea stains , and the cheese was mouldy so we left that and went to change in to swim wear in changing room bin was over flowing with used flip flops basket over flowing with wet towels and dressing gowns .my key opened 6 different lockers one had someone eles belonging in which i could have easily taken their purse ring watch ect if i was a theif but luckily am not .i did go tell the reception about this .
So.....thought right ok lets hit the hot tub for an hour this is where we should have been asked if we would like a glass of pessecco but didnt get climbed into the hot tub and my sister asked do they get clean regularly i said yeah should think so then i look see dirt residue round the edge of the inside of the hot tub and this hot tub was given to us which wasnt usually used for bookings cos was pretty much next to a building site where they are building next to it ,so that did it i had enough we spent about an hour out of the 3 hours we was supose to have ,didnt enjoy it one bit and felt id wasted my money so climbed out and asked for a refund wont be going back disgraceful service .no offer of a free complimentary spa day to make up for it or nothing only thing was offerred was instead of us having a refund could we book another day to suit myself as a complimentary ??? Ermm complimentary that iv still paid for ? Really .how about refund then offer us a free spa day for what we actually wanted in the first palce as an apology?. Even one star is to much for this service.

Avoid !! Was given buy a gift voucher for spa day and 2 treatments for 30th birthday booked 4 weeks ahead and turn up book in (no said anything). then at my time to start my first treatment to be told sorry no one to do it and can’t do it. Ask if I could book for another day didn’t have a clue and ask me for my number but never called me back. Sent 3 emails with a official complaint - no response. No one ever answers the phone. The walls and roof are covered in mold and smell. Really bad experience and ruined birthday. Avoid avoid !

The ‘Spa’ is some old cold empty building. No music, no ambience, no nice spa smells that you get in proper establishments.

When we arrived at our given time of 10am our hot tub was empty and we had to go and ask one of the many incompetent staff what was going on. She responded ‘the maintenance were meant to fill it but didn’t’. We were then told we could use the facilities whilst we waited. It’s poor quality steam room and an okay sauna. But that’s it.

Went to go for treatments, filled in those forms about health conditions etc and I have a few allergies, eczema and asthma so I’d ticked a few of the boxes. My sister had ticked none. One of the beauty therapists looked at mine and my sisters forms and said to the other ‘you take this one and I’ll take the difficult one’. Straight away making me feel uncomfortable. The massages themselves were mediocre. Not the worse I can imagine having, but similar to my boyfriend when he can’t be bothered.

Had some time in the lukewarm ‘hot tub’ as we’d purchase a bottle of Prosecco (which was not actual Prosecco but they still charged as though it was) - before deciding to give up and get dressed as we were freezing. Side note - the changing room is ridiculously small and for four of us was just enough, anymore you’d be stuck. There was also damp and the wallpaper was peeling. I’d got changed first and went out and sat at reception whilst waiting for my mum and two sisters. The blonde girl from before who was blaming maintenance - came up to me saying she needed payment off my sister for the Prosecco. I said she’d have to speak to my sister, but she was getting changed. The girl went to actually go into the changing room to get my sister and I had to say to her to maybe wait and let her get dressed first so she wasn’t naked during the conversation and that she didn’t need to panic we were going to leave without paying.

I mean this is long enough, but suffice to say that after that, the afternoon tea was shocking and there was no music in the room (why do you all hate music or nice atmospheres?) It was old, dated, cold and gross.

My sister went to complain to reception and was spoken to in quite a rude and patronising manner by the chavvy girl on reception. She then spoke to the manager who seemingly was lovely and has recently taken over and said there was improvements to be made.

All I’ll say is good luck, because with staff and service like that, you are going to need it.

Booked a spa day for a friends birthday, but instead of returning home relaxed we felt disappointed.

The day should have included a treatment each. However we were informed the night before that due to staffing issues we couldn’t have the treatments. Understandably disappointed, we opted to go anyway when we negotiated a reduction in price.
Whilst I totally appreciate that staffing issues are challenging, and somewhat out of our control, my actual issue is that fact that whilst the staff on duty were pleasant, there was little effort made to make us feel welcome, show us around, or even show us how the facilities work.
Having read previous reviews it would appear that “staffing issues” has been used as an excuse now for some time. Staffing issues can certainly pose a problem but the management is clearly poor at planning given how many customers have been informed the evening before.

We were expecting a robe and slippers on arrival. We were advised that the slippers were “stuck on a shipping container” and so we had no appropriate footwear to wear which was unpleasant given that the hot tubs are outdoors and the stairwell was dirty and sticky. Speaking of the stairwell, I appreciate that an old building comes with its problems, but it smelt like dirty mops and the overall feel was that it was neglected.

Part of the spa day included use of the outdoor hot tubs. No one showed us how to use them and they were set far too hot so we ended up just getting out after a few minutes.

The day was ok but far from the luxury experience that we were expecting. I wrote to the hotel/spa who have ignored me (I followed up my initial email with another to ensure that my original had made it to the right department). I got a response the second time advising that the compliant had been forwarded on to the spa manager.
I’m still waiting for a response so I emailed them again to say I was headed to trip advisor….

The photos sell a luxury spa break but the reality is a big fat let down. I sincerely hope management read these reviews and respond appropriately as it’s a real shame. The castle is beautiful and in such a nice part of the world. It could be a real gem.

Spa Day - we weren’t disappointed!
We will be back

Positives - beautiful setting
Jacuzzis hot and clean
Unlimited tea, coffees and infused water
Treatment rooms and spa areas very clean and new
Treatments and therapists were excellent
Professional staff
Afternoon tea was lovely and included Prosecco or soft drink

Areas for improvement
Ladies changing room needs decorating
Toiletries for use in shower would be nice
Store jacuzzi covers out of sight when jacuzzis in use
